‘I was really terrified': Residents react after police arrest gunman following shootout in St George
UPDATE 6:20 p.m.: St George Police Department has closed 3000 E from 2930 S. to Seegmiller Drive while they conduct an investigation and advises individuals to use alternate routes.
The incident happened around 4 p.m., near 3000 E Seegmiller Drive. St. George Police Department, and several Washington County resources, including the Sheriff's Office, SWAT teams, and negotiation teams, responded. Residents reported hearing a significant number of gunshots and having to decide between staying in place or evacuating.
'We just locked our doors and would just peek out; there were tons of shots going back and forth,' said one resident, who took in several neighbor kids as they were evacuated from their homes. Another resident reported hearing at least 65 shots exchanged.
Residents stayed in close contact during the incident, communicating over text and telling neighbors to stay inside.
Another resident, a young kid, said, 'I was really terrified, I was stressed', and recalled 'sprinting' to his neighbor's home. His family was one of several asked to evacuate. When they were allowed back in their home, they found a shot had gone through one of their windows.
Chief Kyle Whitehead, with the St George Police Department (SGPD), said that a single individual barricaded himself in his home and begun to shoot police officers. The officers returned fire. There have been no reported injuries.
A fire started inside the home and the suspect exited to the backyard, where he later surrendered to police and was taken into custody. Police believe there is no longer an active threat to residents in the area.
Additionally, a significant amount of smoke could be seen near the home, as well as visible flames.
On-scene reporters and residents all experienced burning in their throat, possibly due to tear gas. One resident watched as the home caught fire but didn't realize it was more than smoke until his throat and eyes started burning.
While many residents agreed that their community is 'tight knit', they were not surprised that the suspect was involved in the incident.
Allegedly, this was not a first-time offense with the suspect, whose identity has not yet been confirmed. Residents report that he had previously shot into the street and had a history of outbursts.
Police will be investigating this as an officer-involved critical incident.

Paddleboarder dies while rescuing 12-year-old girl in Utah reservoir
A man died in a Utah reservoir on Saturday night after trying to help a 12-year-old girl as she drifted farther from shore on an inflatable tube, authorities said. Daniel Braga Figueiredo, 31, borrowed a paddleboard and entered Silver Lake Flat Reservoir around 7 p.m. local time, according to the Utah County Sheriff's Office. Figueiredo was related to the girl, a spokesperson for the office said in a news release. When he reached her, people watched Figueiredo and the girl struggle to relocate her from the tube onto his paddleboard before the two fell into the reservoir. The sheriff's spokesperson said witnesses entered the water, too, at that point, in hopes of helping them. Figueiredo was last seen lifting the girl out of the water and onto an inflatable device, the spokesperson said. He then disappeared beneath the surface. Witnesses called 911 after the man vanished. Rescuers from several agencies subsequently responded to the scene and proceeded to search for Figueiredo, whose body was found and recovered from the reservoir at about 9:30 p.m., according to the sheriff's office. "We would like to again offer our condolences to the family," the sheriff's spokesperson said in a statement. Silver Lake Flat Reservoir is located in American Fork Canyon, inside the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest about 40 miles southeast of Salt Lake City. People who visit often participate in outdoor activities like kayaking, fishing, camping and hiking on surrounding trails, according to the U.S. Forest Service, which manages the reservoir.

IDF postpones evacuation of Tzur Harel outpost after operation plans leaked
Dozens of Palestinian vehicles were set on fire in the village of Burqa, near the Tzur Harel outpost, on Monday night. Hilltop youth reportedly prevented security forces from carrying out operational activities on Monday night, including blocking the evacuation of an illegal outpost in the Binyamin area of the West Bank, Army Radio said on Tuesday. According to reports, IDF and Border Police soldiers prepared to evacuate the Tzur Harel outpost, located near the Givat Assaf junction. Security sources told Army Radio that this outpost has been a source of clashes recently, and that they received reports that hilltop youth were planning to attack Palestinians in the area, leading to evacuation for security purposes. Army Radio noted that in such cases, the military does not require prior approval from the political echelon; rather, the Central Command chief has the authority to order the evacuation. The report said that the planned military operation was leaked hours in advance, allowing the hilltop youth to call for reinforcements, where they gathered to resist the evacuation. According to reports, dozens of Palestinian vehicles were set on fire in the village of Burqa, near the Tzur Harel outpost. Over the course of Monday night, the IDF held a security assessment and decided that due to the preparation by hilltop youth and desire to limit violent confrontations, the evacuation would be postponed to another time. Security forces told Army Radio that the decision to postpone the evacuation was because "it would not be wise to do this through confrontation and force." The report also cited the IDF as saying that they would investigate the leak.
