British Agency To Send Team To India For Air India Plane Crash Probe

A British agency that investigates civil aircraft accidents and serious incidents on Thursday said it will be deploying a multidisciplinary investigation team to India to support the Indian-led investigation into the plane crash in Ahmedabad.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said it has "formally offered its assistance" to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau in India. It said it would have "expert status" in the Indian investigation because UK citizens were on board the plane.
"We are deploying a multidisciplinary investigation team to India to support the Indian-led investigation. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic accident," AAIB said.
The Air India plane carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed in a residential area in Ahmedabad minutes after taking off. There were 169 Indians, 53 British, one Canadian and seven Portuguese nationals onboard apart from 12 crew members.

BATHINDA: Eighty students completed five year Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) from government college of veterinary science Rampura Phool in March 2025, and now Punjab state veterinary council has found that the college affiliated with Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), is not recognised with the veterinary council of India (VCI) and the college is not included in Schedule-I of the Indian Veterinary council act. The council have stated that the registration of all the graduates stands cancelled with immediate effect and have directed the graduates to surrender their registration certificates before July 3 and failure to return registration certificates shall lead to legal proceedings against them. The graduates are in shock upon getting the notice. As per the public notice issued by Punjab state veterinary council the fresh registration will be allowed only after the said college is included in Schedule-I of the VCI and from the date of such notification. The graduates say they have completed the five year course and only now has it been revealed that the college is not recognised. They should have been told about it before taking admission, and they would have taken admission in some other colleges. Now, they have spent five long years in pursuing the course and have paid the requisite fee to find they are at the crossroads. Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Vice Chancellor Dr Jatinderpal Singh Gill and Registrar Dr Suresh Kumasr Sharma when contacted told TOI that the issue is about issuance of notification about recognition to the institution for issuing the final degree even as the recognition was granted step by step to complete four years of the course. A team from VCI visited the college in the month of February 2025, just days before the five year course was to be completed. The team recommended to Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying to grant recognition and admit in Schedule-I of Indian veterinary council act. The ministry raised certain points and wrote to VCI about it. The VCI sent the communication about points raised by the ministry with us and the university is under process to address those points and clarifications. The university is hopeful to get the recognition soon but till the recognition is not granted, the graduates could not do the practice or apply for job as per the provisions of the act. The university is in regular touch with the authorities.

A group of senior Air India pilots recreated on simulators some adverse conditions, such as flying with higher weight and temperature, and with landing gear down and retracted wing flaps at 50 feet, with the results showing the Boeing 787-8 aircraft continued flying, sources said on Wednesday. The simulator test was carried out independently by the Air India Boeing 787 aircraft fleet trainers during a simulator training session at the airline's Mumbai facility within days of the crash of an Air India Dreamliner in Ahmedabad, sources said. When contacted, Air India said pilots conducted simulator tests on their own, and the airline had no role in that. Among the various theories doing the rounds initially regarding the possible causes of the Air India aircraft crash in Ahmedabad on June 12 that killed over 260 people, was that the pilot flew the aircraft with retracted flaps and gear down. 'The pilots simulated AI 171 flight conditions on their own during the training session. They attempted to create some slightly adverse conditions like with higher weight and higher temperature, while keeping (landing) gear down and retracting (wing) flaps at 50 feet altitude,' said a source. 'In the simulator, the aircraft continued flying,' he said. Flaps are movable panels, located along the trailing edge of an aircraft's wings, which get extended during takeoff and landing to increase the wing's surface area, which provides more 'lift' that keeps the plane flying. This additional aerodynamic force is crucial during low-speed flight, like takeoff or landing. Flaps are adjusted manually by either pilot, depending on the situation. In cruise flight, they remain retracted. The crash, one of the worst air disasters in India in decades, involved a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating as Air India flight AI 171. The aircraft was en route to London's Gatwick Airport when it crashed into a medical hostel complex in Ahmedabad's Meghani Nagar area shortly after takeoff. Of the 242 people onboard, 241 were killed, with only one survivor. The total death toll stood at 260, including casualties on the ground. India's nodal aircraft accident probe agency, AAIB, launched a probe after the tragedy and constituted a multidisciplinary team on June 13. The team includes representatives from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), an air traffic control officer, and an aviation medicine specialist. Last week, the government said data is being extracted from black boxes, and analysis of the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder is underway to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the fatal crash of the Air India plane in Ahmedabad on June 12.
