I grew up half in Hong Kong and half in Canada, where my family moved when I was eight.
We lived in a small town where many in the Chinese community worked in restaurants, including my family, so I grew up eating food from Chinese buffets and also delicious home-made meals by our Vietnamese-Chinese neighbours.
I like casual spots and comfort meals. I cook a lot to feel healthy, but I love to go on adventures on weekends, exploring places that have gone viral as well as other people's local favourites. It is a fun way to use food to explore my own city, going to areas I would not usually visit.
For example, I have found the best pineapple bun is from Sai Kung Cafe & Bakery (6-7 Kam Po Court, 2 Sai Kung Hoi Pong Square, Sai Kung. Tel: 2792 3861). The best place for street-food-style stalls is Kwai Fong Plaza (Kwai Fong Estate, 177 Hing Fong Road, Kwai Chung).

Hong Kong's Aaron Kwok named honorary narcotics commissioner in anti-drugs push

Cantopop star Aaron Kwok Fu-shing has been appointed as an honorary narcotics commissioner as part of the Hong Kong government's latest campaign to stamp out the increasingly popular novel drug etomidate. Secretary of Security Chris Tang Ping-keung announced Kwok's honorary role at a publicity event for the 'Anti-Drug, New Era' campaign on Sunday, while the singer gave a performance of specially designed dance moves and chanted slogans with the audience. 'Your responsibility is to try and observe on campus. If any students are unfortunately trying etomidate, you should report them to rescue them from the clutches of drugs,' the singer told about 50 youth ambassadors at the event. Kwok also taught the new dance moves to the assembled youth ambassadors, who are expected to raise awareness at schools about the dangers of etomidate and other drugs. The government has stepped up efforts to crack down on etomidate, formerly known as 'space oil', including renaming the drug last week. The narcotic's main ingredient, from which it also gets its new name, was included in the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance in February. The narcotic is commonly sold in e-cigarette liquid capsules and used in vapes. Its main ingredient was originally used as an anaesthetic in hospitals or administered to animals in rare cases.

Working in Hong Kong, living in Shenzhen: why people are making move to mainland city

At 8.30am on Monday, 24-year-old Lisa Sun leaves her flat in Shenzhen and begins her long commute to work. It starts with an e-bike ride through her neighbourhood, followed by a packed Metro journey, a border crossing intermission, and a similarly packed MTR trip. Ninety minutes later, she steps out into the bustle of Causeway Bay in Hong Kong – ready to start her day at the office. She repeats the same journey in reverse after work, finally getting home close to 9pm. Sun, born in the southwestern province of Sichuan, is one of a growing number of people commuting between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, trading time on the cities' subway systems for more space and lower costs. There has been a flood of posts on China's RedNote social media platform from cross-border commuters – and those considering the move – sharing tips on the best Shenzhen neighbourhoods to find a place to rent, and which checkpoints and transport options to choose. 'I decided to commute between Shenzhen and Hong Kong the day I got the job, because I wanted to live alone, but renting a flat in Hong Kong on my own would be way too expensive,' Sun said.

Hong Kong prepares to celebrate 100 days to National Games with cycle ceremony

Hong Kong will mark 100 days until the start of the National Games with a countdown ceremony involving the city's leader on Saturday, in a coordinated celebration with co-hosts Macau and Guangdong. Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu will lead the event at the Velodrome alongside sports and tourism minister Rosanna Law Shuk-pui, and Yeung Tak-keung, the head of the National Games Coordination Office in Hong Kong. Law and Yeung are expected to be among those completing the last 100km of a million kilometre challenge that has seen ordinary Hongkongers, collectively bike, run and walk their way to 999,900km already this month. Lee will later head to Shenzhen to be part of an evening celebration, one of several taking place on the mainland this weekend. On Sunday, Law and Yeung will head to Go Park Sai Sha, which, as part of a fitness day in the city, is staging a carnival hosted by the Hong Kong Guangdong Youth Federation. The pair will be joined by athletes and other dignitaries for the event organisers said would serve 'as a bridge' within the Greater Bay Area and deepen 'the coordinated development of sports'.
