Türkiye open to backing revival of Black Sea Grain Initiative
Originally brokered in July 2022 by the UN and Türkiye, the agreement envisioned the safe passage of Ukrainian agricultural exports to the global markets in exchange for the West lifting restrictions on Russian grain and fertilizer trade. Moscow withdrew from the deal in 2023, citing the West's failure to meet its obligations under the deal.
According to the Kremlin, Erdogan
'voiced support for Russian-American dialogue and reaffirmed Ankara's willingness to help facilitate progress on the Black Sea agreement.'
On Monday, US and Russian officials agreed to restart the initiative, following 12 hours of talks in Saudi Arabia. Russia requested that its agricultural bank, Rosselkhozbank, and other institutions involved in food and fertilizer sales, be reconnected to the SWIFT international payments system, which had been agreed as part of the original Black Sea Grain Initiative.
Moscow cited the West's failure to follow through on that commitment, along with Kiev's alleged misuse of the arrangement for military purposes, as reasons for not renewing the rolling annual agreement in 2023.
US President Donald Trump confirmed on Tuesday that his administration is considering lifting some sanctions on Moscow.

The Kremlin said Moscow and Washington had also discussed steps to ensure safe navigation in the Black Sea, including pledges to avoid the use of force and prevent commercial vessels from being used for military purposes. Proposed measures also include ship inspections.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with Channel 1 on Tuesday that Moscow would need firm guarantees from the US to renew the deal. Russia's position now

UN warns Haiti's capital nearing collapse as gangs tighten grip
Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, is on the brink of total collapse, with heavily armed gangs now controlling most of the city, a senior UN official has warned. The official stressed that violence continues to escalate across the Caribbean nation, while the international response remains slow and fragmented. Haiti has been without a president since the assassination of Jovenel Moise in July 2021, leaving a power vacuum that has allowed armed gangs to expand their influence unchecked. Earlier this week, the UN's International Organization for Migration reported that the ongoing crisis has displaced a record 1.3 million people across the Caribbean state. The IOM noted that the number of makeshift shelters has skyrocketed by more than 70%. According to UN statistics, at least 5,600 people were killed in gang-related incidents in 2024 alone. According to AP, the Kenyan-led, UN-supported mission in Haiti, which arrived in 2024 to help curb gang violence, has remained understaffed and underfunded, with only around 40% of the planned 2,500 personnel currently deployed. His comments followed Trump's remarks that he was 'unhappy' about the lack of progress toward peace. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump spoke by phone on Thursday in a call that lasted over an hour, covering the Ukraine conflict, the situation around Iran, broader Middle East tensions, and Russia-US cooperation, according to senior Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov. Trump later lamented that he had made 'no progress' in convincing Putin to end the fighting, while the Kremlin noted the leaders discussed the possibility of new direct talks between Moscow and Kiev. Commenting on Trump's remarks, Peskov told reporters on Friday that 'without a doubt, we pay very close attention to all statements by President Trump.' He added that Moscow is 'interested in achieving our goals during the special military operation, and preferably by political and diplomatic means.' 'However, since that is not possible at this stage, we continue our operation,' Peskov stated. In recent months, Russia and Ukraine also held two rounds of talks. Although no breakthroughs were achieved, a series of prisoner exchanges took place. Moscow continues to insist that Ukraine recognize the new territorial reality on the ground, agree to neutral status, demilitarization, and denazification – demands that Kiev has rejected.
