Amarnath Yatra begins amid tight security

Srinagar, July 3 (UNI) Amid unprecedented security, the annual Amarnath Yatra commenced on Thursday, with the first batch of pilgrims setting off from the twin base camps at Baltal and Nunwan. The Yatris are on their way to the cave shrine in South Kashmir Himalayas, officials said. Over 5000 Yatris, chanting 'Bam Bam Bhole' and 'Har Har Mahadev,' started early today morning from the twin tracks- the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the 14-km Baltal route in Ganderbal district. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday morning flagged off the first batch of pilgrims from the Bhagwati Nagar Base Camp in Jammu. The pilgrims had reached the twin base camps of Nunwan and Baltal from Jammu last evening amid a warm welcome by locals and administration Officials said of the first batch, over 2000 pilgrims began the Yatra through Baltal and over 3000 via Pahalgam. The pilgrims set out early Thursday on their challenging journey, traversing forested mountain trails. While some undertook the trek on foot, others traveled on ponies. The pilgrims from Baltal were ceremoniously flagged off by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri. Secretary, Science and Technology Department, Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, who is the Nodal Officer for Yatra-2025 for Baltal axis; Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, Jatin Kishore; SSP Ganderbal, Khalil Poswal; and other senior officers from the District Administration and Police were also present on the occasion. The Baltal base camp echoed with chants of "Bam Bam Bhole" and "Har Har Mahadev", as thousands of ecstatic pilgrims including men, women, elderly devotees, and sadhus, set off on their sacred journey to the Holy Cave Shrine of Shri Amarnath Ji. The pilgrims expressed joy and appreciation for the robust arrangements made by the Jammu and Kashmir UT Administration, Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board (SASB), and the Police. They lauded the seamless coordination and facilities put in place to ensure a smooth and secure Yatra experience. From Nunwan Pahalgam, the Yatra was flagged by Deputy Commissioner Anantnag Syeed Fakhruddin Hamid and Senior Superintendent of Police Anantnag Amritpal Singh. This year's Amarnath pilgrimage comes more than two months after a deadly terror attack at the Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, in which 25 tourists and a local were killed. The 38-day pilgrimage will conclude on August 9. UNI MJR RKM

Uttarakhand Government halts Char Dham Yatra owing to bad weather

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced on Thursday (July 3, 2025) that the State Government has decided to temporarily suspend the Char Dham Yatra owing to the bad weather conditions, noting that the safety of the pilgrims is the government's priority. "Considering the weather, the Char Dham yatra has been temporarily halted. In the future, we will proceed with the yatra in accordance with the weather. When the yatra is safe, it will continue... Our priority during the yatra is the safety of all pilgrims... All our district officials, disaster management teams, National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force are fully prepared", CM Dhami told reporters on Thursday (July 3, 2025.) 'The Kedarnath Dham Yatra has been temporarily halted for now owing to falling debris and stones at the Munkatia Sliding Zone under the Sonprayag area in Uttarakhand,' police said on Thursday (July 3, 2025), adding that it will resume once the administration clears the road. 'The road is blocked due to debris and stones falling in the Munkatia Sliding Zone under the Sonprayag area. The Kedarnath Dham Yatra has been temporarily halted for now. The Yatra will resume once the road is cleared,' Rudraprayag police said in their X post. Char Dham Yatra: Six, including five women, dead as helicopter ferrying pilgrims crashes in Uttarakhand The annual Char Dham Yatra, which includes pilgrimages to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri, is one of the most significant religious journeys in Hinduism. The State Government has undertaken a series of infrastructure upgrades in recent years — including improved roads, helicopter services, and better accommodation — to ensure a safer and smoother pilgrimage experience for devotees. This year, the Kedarnath Dham has seen an unprecedented inflow of pilgrims, which officials attribute to both improved facilities and increasing spiritual interest. Authorities have also deployed enhanced security and medical response teams to manage the high-altitude yatra effectively. The Kedarnath temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located at an altitude of more than 11,000 ft in the Himalayas and holds immense religious significance. The Kedarnath Yatra doors for the year 2025 were opened for devotees on May 2.

Amarnath Yatra 2025: Amarnath Yatra begins amid heavy security cover, pilgrims leave from base camps

Amarnath Yatra 2025: The annual Amarnath Yatra started Thursday with the first batch of pilgrims starting off from the Baltal and Nunwan base camps, and the second batch setting off from Jammu. A total of 5,880 pilgrims are expected to be visiting the shrine as part of the first batch. The 38-day pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre shrine in the south Kashmir Himalayas began from both the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag district as well as the 14-km, but steeper, Baltal route in Ganderbal district. The batches of pilgrims left from the Nunwan base camp in Pahalgam, in south Kashmir's Anantnag, and Baltal base camp in Sonamarg area of central Kashmir's Ganderbal at the first light of the day, the officials said. On Wednesday, the first batch of 5,892 yatris was flagged off from the yatra base camp in Jammu's Bhagwati Nagar by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. The pilgrims reached the Kashmir Valley in the afternoon and received a rousing welcome from the administration and locals. They will pay obeisance at the cave shrine, which houses the naturally occurring ice-lingam formation. This year's Amarnath pilgrimage comes about two months after a terror attack in Pahalgam killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists. As such, a stringent multi-tier security cover was in place on Wednesday as the convoy moved on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. 'The yatra is being monitored 24×7 from the Integrated Command and Control Centre at Raj Bhawan and the Police Control Room, while an RFID-based tracking system has also been put in place to monitor movement of yatris and their convoy on a real time basis,' officials had told The Indian Express. Last year, the yatra had recorded the highest footfall in 12 years, with over five lakh devotees visiting the holy cave.
