No Jasprit Bumrah For 2nd Test? India Likely To Bring In 2 Spinners For Must-Win Edgbaston Clash Against England

India.com10 hours ago
IND vs ENG: India's preparation for the second Test against England at Edgbaston has sparked speculation over several key changes to the playing XI. With the match scheduled to begin on July 2, the training session on Monday gave the clearest signs yet that a reshuffled team is in the works most notably in the bowling department.
Bumrah Likely to Be Rested
India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who bowled a marathon 43.4 overs in the first Test at Headingley, is almost certain to miss the second Test as the management looks to manage his workload.
Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed that a decision would be taken within 24 hours but hinted heavily at Bumrah's absence. At training, Bumrah barely bowled only a few deliveries at the end of the session suggesting that India are looking ahead to keep him fresh for the third Test at Lord's.
Third Seamer Dilemma: Arshdeep or Akash Deep?
With Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna likely to retain their spots after decent outings in Leeds, India must choose between left-armer Arshdeep Singh and right-arm seamer Akash Deep for the third pace option.
Arshdeep offers a left-arm angle that can trouble England's right-heavy top order, while Akash Deep impressed with his seam movement during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year but is still hunting for consistent rewards.
Nitish Reddy Set to Replace Shardul Thakur
One of the clearest signs of change is the expected exclusion of Shardul Thakur. The all-rounder had a quiet first Test bowling only 16 overs and scoring a combined five runs and is set to be replaced by Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Reddy's dual skills with bat and ball, along with sharp fielding, provide better balance and energy to the XI, especially in light of India's fielding lapses in the first match.
Two Spinners on the Cards
India's decision to go with just one spinner in the first Test backfired, particularly in the second innings. With the pitch at Edgbaston expected to assist turn later in the game and hot weather prevailing, India may opt for two spinners in Birmingham.
Ravindra Jadeja, if fully fit, will return to the XI, while the second spin option will likely be between Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar. Kuldeep's wrist spin offers an attacking option, while Sundar brings off-spin along with solid lower-order batting. There's even a possibility that both Jadeja and Sundar play as spin-bowling all-rounders.
No Yashasvi Jaiswal In Slip Cordon
After four dropped catches at Headingley several at gully India are reworking their slip cordon. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who struggled in the position, was removed from catching drills. In his place, Monday's session saw Karun Nair at first slip, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill at second and third, and a rotation between Reddy and Sai Sudharsan at fourth slip and gully.
Must-Win Match for India
India trail the five-match series 0-1 after a five-wicket defeat in Leeds. With England naming an unchanged XI for the second Test, India need both tactical changes and stronger execution to level the series. Coach Ryan ten Doeschate summed it up best: the selection tweaks will mean little unless India correct their fielding and seize key moments better in Birmingham.

Shubman Gill Ends Suspense On Jasprit Bumrah For India vs England 2nd Test: "He Is..."

Shubman Gill, Indian cricket team captain, has ended the suspense over the availability of Jasprit Bumrah for the second Test starting in Birmingham on Wednesday. Bumrah was India's best bowler in the 1st India vs England Test. After the conclusion of the series opener, head coach Gautam Gambhir declared that the management would not budge on Bumrah's three-match utilisation. There were recommendations from fans and former cricketers to use Bumrah in all five Tests, but Gambhir quickly turned down the suggestion, claiming they were more concerned about his workload. Now, Gill has said that a call on the final combination will be taken after the final practice session. 'Bumrah is surely available. We have to look into this workload management. We have to look into the final combination today at the nets,' Gill told reporters on the pre-match press conference on Tuesday. "We knew prior to the series that we would get Jasprit for three games, but we had that sorted beforehand. Yes, obviously we would miss him, but we have our plans sorted.' Earlier, India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate addressed the concerns about Bumrah and declared that he is "available" but the management is yet to make a call on whether to send him to the on-field action or not. "Yeah, he's available for the game, obviously. We know from the start he's only going to play three out of the five. He's obviously had eight days to recover from the last Test. But given conditions and workload and how we think we can best manage for the next four games, we haven't made a call on that. We're going to see what the other guys are with their workload as well. So technically, yes, he's available. But we haven't made a decision on whether he's going to play or not yet," Doeschate told reporters in a press conference. India lined up with its pace spearhead, Bumrah, in the series opener at Headingley but still ended on the wrong side of the result. He dazzled in the first innings with figures of 5/83 but lost his magic and returned wicketless in the second. With Bumrah's threat vanished into thin air, England trounced India by gunning down a 371-run target, their second-highest successful chase in the format.

Gautam Gambhir's Future As India Coach Under Scrutiny Over England Series? Ex-Star Says: "BCCI Will Slowly..."

Former England spinner Monty Panesar has pointed out important concerns regarding Gautam Gambhir 's tenure as India head coach, citing the team's issues, with bowling as the primary reason behind the increasing doubt on his role. India will be hoping to level the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in the second Test against England at the Edgbaston Stadium starting July 2. All eyes will be on the Shubman Gill -led side after they lost the first Test despite holding much of the advantage after the first innings. In the five-wicket loss, India became the first team to lose a Test despite having five batters score hundreds. In an exclusive conversation with IANS, Panesar spoke on the importance of picking a bowling lineup that can deliver in England. "The problem is that if Gautam has the ability to make his team into a good batting unit, he then needs to show the ability can make the team into a good bowling unit. Fans are going to troll. They're going to come after Gautam Gambhir. When India were 400 plus, India should have won the Test match. But the question is, 'Is Gautam Gambhir a good coach to make the bowling good? Does he have the ability? ' He needs to show that. 'He needs to now think, right, I know how to get the batting to fire, but as a coach, can I pick the team to take 20 wickets? That's his biggest challenge right now in England, and if he is not able to demonstrate that, then I think the BCCI will slowly, Test by Test match, assess him, and they'll just think, you know, what should we do after the end of the series? His biggest challenge is going to be to pick the right attack for every venue to take 20 wickets,' Panesar told IANS. The former left-handed opening batter was appointed as India's head coach following Rahul Dravid 's departure. Since his appointment, India have won only three of their 11 Tests played - 2-0 win vs Bangladesh and 1-3 loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy - which also led to India falling out of the top two in the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle. When asked to predict the conditions at Edgbaston, Panesar revealed he expects it to be a turning wicket which will help Kuldeep Yadav or Washington Sundar, with the former England cricketer advising team India to bring in one of these two as the frontline spinners. 'It's going to be a turning wicket. Edgbaston is dry. We won't see much grass from the wicket. I think it will help India. The Edgbaston wicket will suit India. India just need to work out, right? Batting isn't the problem. It's bowling. We need to take 20 wickets to win a Test match. That's the most important thing, and Shubhman Gill did say, 'I will pick 5-4 tailenders, but an attack that can take 20 wickets.' 'From that point of view, I think Prasidh Krishna bowls too short, maybe give him a rest. Bumrah, I think, will rest anyway. Kuldeep Yadav comes in, or Washington Sundar, one of the other, to play an extra spinner. Ashdeep Singh has to play. Left arm seam, I think that will cause problems for the England team. Then, they have Mohammed Siraj, maybe Shardul Thakur could play,' he added.

IND vs ENG: 'If Jasprit Bumrah isn't playing, then it should be ...' - Irfan Pathan makes bold claim ahead of Edgbaston Test

India may rest Bumrah to manage his workload over the five-match series. Pathan believes Akash Deep's bowling style could suit English conditions well. 'If Bumrah is not there, then who should come into the side in his place? Akash Deep, from what's been seen in the nets, seems to be getting into his rhythm. I feel that he is the Shami mould type of bowler,' Pathan said on his YouTube channel. In the first Test at Headingley, India lost by five wickets. Despite hundreds from Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, England chased down a big target of 371 runs. Among bowlers, Bumrah was the only Indian bowler who looked in control and unsurprisingly claimed the joint-most wickets for the visitors in the first Test. His supporting cast, however, struggled to apply pressure on England's batters. Ryan ten Doeschate press conference: On Bumrah fitness, drops Big Playing XI hint, 2 spinners Pathan explained that Akash Deep could offer more control because of his focus on seam and swing. 'It is, but we also feel we can go 1-1 or keep the score at 1-0 without Jasprit. Again, that's putting the eggs in the back end of the series. We're going to need him at some stage as well. You've got to decide when you're going to play your strongest suit,' ten Doeschate said. A final decision on Bumrah's selection is expected to be made on the day of the match.
