Inflatable Jesus, Christmas tree and a keyboard among thousands of items lost on Irish Rail

Irish Examiner5 days ago
Two ukuleles, a bag of spuds, a Christmas tree, and an inflatable Jesus were among the items lost and found on Irish Rail services last year.
The rail operator said it logged thousands of individual lost items, including common belongings like mobile phones, earphones, wallets, books, and clothes.
But there were also more unusual entries, including a 'cup with smelly stuff inside,' a dog lead, and a brown fur coat.
Several children were left without precious toys, including a soft dinosaur, a cuddly cat, and a Spiderman stuffed toy.
Some items were relatively expensive. One person lost two bottles of Tom Ford aftershave and a bottle of brandy.
Other high-value belongings included a Marc Jacobs purse, a diamond and gemstone ring, and gold earrings.
Some weren't quite as valuable, such as the 'fake Gucci handbag' retrieved on one service.
Another passenger lost a violin, one mislaid a Yamaha keyboard, while two forgot to take their ukuleles home.
ID cards from international visitors were also found, including a US driver's licence, a Hungarian ID card, and a Spanish passport.
Other identification documents included an Irish Prison Service card, an Office of Government Procurement ID, and a University College Cork staff card.
Sports equipment was frequently recovered, including boxing gloves, a bicycle, a badminton case, and rackets.
Some of the more curious items included a 'large brown envelope,' though it wasn't clear whether it contained cash.
Religious items were also logged, such as a Holy Bible, an inflatable Jesus, and a wooden set of rosary beads.
There were also more sinister discoveries, including a flick-knife, a bag of knives, and a book on the history of witchcraft.
Even medical devices were among the lost property. A sleep apnoea machine was left behind on a Cork service, and an insulin stick was found on another.
A spokesman for Irish Rail said lost and found items are a daily part of rail travel and public transport everywhere.
He said: 'While there are few amongst us who haven't left an umbrella or glasses or similar behind us, we often find more significant and higher value items too, both monetary and sentimental.'
The spokesman added that all items are collected and held for at least 30 days, and customers can contact Irish Rail through its website or relevant train station to recover lost belongings.

Train derailment kills three in Germany

Three people have been killed and several others were injured when a regional passenger train derailed in a wooded area in southwestern Germany, police said. About 100 passengers were aboard the train, when the incident occurred at around 6:10 pm (5:10pm Irish time) near the town of Riedlingen in Baden-Wuerttemberg state. Contacted by AFP, police initially said four people had been killed before correcting their statement to three victims. Authorities declined to elaborate on the number of injured or how seriously hurt they were, but tabloid Bild cited emergency workers saying there were 50 injured. German rail operator Deutsche Bahn confirmed several deaths and numerous injured. It added that two train carriages had derailed "for reasons yet unknown". Authorities were currently investigating the circumstances of the incident, the operator said, and traffic had been suspended over a 40km stretch of the route. German media reported that a landslide might have caused the incident as severe storms swept through the region, according to weather services. The passenger train was travelling from the German town of Sigmaringen to the city of Ulm when it derailed in a forested area. In a post on social media, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his condolences to the families of those killed. He added that he was in close contact with both the interior and transport ministers, and had asked them to "provide the emergency services with all the support they need". Footage from the scene showed yellow-and-grey-coloured train carriages lying on their sides, as firefighters and emergency services tried to get to the passengers. According to local TV station SWR, helicopters arrived shortly after the incident to transport the injured to hospitals in the area, and emergency doctors from nearby hospitals were alerted. German transport is regularly criticised by passengers for its outdated infrastructure, with travellers facing frequent train delays and various technical problems. The government has pledged to invest several hundred billion euros over the next few years, in particular to modernise infrastructure. In June 2022, a train derailed near a Bavarian Alpine resort in southern Germany, killing four people and injuring dozens. Germany's deadliest rail incident happened in 1998 when a high-speed train operated by state-owned Deutsche Bahn derailed in Eschede in Lower Saxony, killing 101 people.

TD to make formal complaint after 'being pushed by garda' before All-Ireland

Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae says he has decided to make a formal complaint after allegedly being pushed by a garda before Sunday's All-Ireland final. 'I will [complain] tomorrow, guaranteed, because we did not deserve that,' the deputy told the Irish Mirror on Sunday evening, several hours after the incident in Dublin city centre. The politician was with dozens of fellow Kerry fans in the Cathedral Street street area of the inner city - beside O'Connell Street - when the incident happened. It had been viewed around 100,000 times on social media sites by Sunday night The footage appears to show a uniformed garda using one hand to move Deputy Healy-Rae away from him. The incident started when hundreds of Kerry fans were lining the street ahead of the Croke Park showdown with Donegal for Sam Maguire - and face off their county would later win. Danny Healy-Rae was allegedly pushed by a garda before Sunday's All-Ireland final Several fans noticed Deputy Healy-Rae - who was wearing a Kerry hat and lanyard - walking along the street. He acknowledged the cheers and waved to the fans before walking a few yards. He stopped to wave to fans again, before turning to walk down the street - which is when the incident with the garda happened. The two men walk close to each other and then the garda appears to stick out a hand to move the deputy out of his way. The two men talk to each other for a few seconds before they go their separate ways - while the crowd starts booing. Speaking after Kerry's 1-26 to 0-19 victory over Donegal, Deputy Healy-Rae said he was disappointed by the officer's actions. And he said he would be making a complaint on Monday morning. Such complaints are handled by Fiosru, the independent policing watchdog. He said: 'I will tomorrow. I am too busy today, I have a lot of calls there to answer and stuff. I will tomorrow, guaranteed, because we did not deserve that. We came up for no trouble - we came up supporting our team. I expected better from the gardai.' He said: 'There were other lovely gardai there and they were doing their duty. Deputy Healy-Rae said he had been inundated with comments from other Kerry fans - including those who witnessed the incident. He said: 'They are all talking to me about it. They booed the garda and everything at that stage. I am disappointed with his behaviour. I did nothing to deserve that. There was no trouble. I just don't know.' The Irish Mirror contacted gardai for comment on Sunday evening. A spokeswoman said in a statement: 'An Garda Síochána does not comment on unverified social media content. Any person who wishes to report the conduct of a member of An Garda Síochána can do so by contacting Fiosrú.'
