Meghalaya's Conrad Sangma Calls For Release of Arrested Kerala Nuns
Mr Sangma called for a fair and impartial investigation and called Sisters Preeti Mary and Vandana Francis' arrest "shocking" and "over unfounded allegations of human trafficking".
"Religious persecution of any kind has no place in a democratic and secular nation like India. Such baseless accusations not only endanger the lives and freedoms of innocent individuals but also reflect a worrying pattern of religious targeting," the Chief Minister wrote. He urged his Chhattisgarh counterpart to withdraw the allegedly false case, and safeguard the rights of minorities. "Justice must prevail. Intolerance must not," he added.
The two nuns, along with another person Sukhman Mandavi, were arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Durg railway station in Chhattisgarh on July 25 following a complaint by a local Bajrang Dal functionary. The nuns have been booked under Section 4 of the Chhattisgarh Freedom of Religion Act, 1968 (forced conversion) and Section 143 of the BNS (trafficking).
Mr Sangma added that the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking their intervention in the matter. Catholic Christians in Meghalaya have also submitted petitions to the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister demanding justice for the detained nuns.
As nationwide protests continue against the arrest of two Kerala nuns, one of the three rescued girls has claimed that she was travelling with them on her own will and was assaulted by Bajrang Dal members. She said she was travelling to Agra on her own will to work as a cook.

Deoria: Two men were arrested following a police encounter in connection with a hit-and-run incident that killed an e-rickshaw driver and injured four others in Uttar Pradesh's Deoria district, officials said. According to Circle Officer (Salempur) Deepak Shukla, the incident occurred near Baruwadih village in the Bariyarpur police station area, where a pickup truck allegedly rammed into an e-rickshaw with the intent to kill. The collision led to the death of the e-rickshaw driver on the spot and left four passengers injured. The accused have been identified as Khurshid Shah of Kushinagar district, and Munab Ali of Gopalganj district in Bihar, Shukla said. Following the incident, Bariyarpur police reached the scene, arrested the two suspects, and brought them to the local police station where a case under BNS sections 103 (murder) and 109 (attempt to murder) was registered. During a police-led site inspection of the vehicle used in the crime, the accused late Thursday night allegedly attempted to escape by pulling out country-made pistols hidden inside the pickup truck and opening fire on the police team. In retaliatory fire by the police, both suspects sustained bullet injuries to their legs, the officer said. They were immediately taken to the district hospital in Deoria for treatment. Authorities said further legal proceedings are underway, he added.

RAIPUR: The woman principal of a private English-medium school in Chhattisgarh's Durg district was arrested Thursday for allegedly meting out corporal punishment to a three-and-a-half-year-old nursery student earlier this week. The girl told police that she had greeted the principal, Ila Evan Colvin, saying "Radhe Radhe" but in response, the latter had allegedly shouted at her, stuck tape over her mouth, and repeatedly struck her palms with a stick. The assault occurred on July 30 at Bagdumar village in Nandini area. Outraged Bajrang Dal activists and villagers protested outside the police station, demanding stringent action against the accused and the school management. Based on a complaint filed by the child's father, cops arrested Colvin and booked her under BNS Sections 115(2) and 299 and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act, for inflicting physical and mental cruelty on a minor and hurting religious sentiments. She was remanded in judicial custody. CSP Harish Patil said further investigation was underway. A special court in Bilaspur on Friday has reserved its order on the bail applications of three people including two Catholic nuns from Kerala who were arrested on charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion. The hearing took place on Friday in the court of Principal District and Sessions Judge (NIA Court) Sirajuddin Qureshi. Public Prosecutor Dauram Chandravanshi opposed the bail applications, citing the early stage of the investigation. The court is expected to deliver its order on Saturday. Defence counsel Amrito Das argued that the accused were detained solely on the basis of unverified allegations, and no significant materials were recovered from them. 'The prosecution has not even sought their custodial interrogation. The alleged victims are all adults, already practicing Christianity, and have been sent back home,' he said. He also pointed out that the statements of the women's parents confirmed that they were not being taken away forcibly or fraudulently. The case has taken on political overtones, with a high-profile delegation from the Kerala unit of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) visiting Chhattisgarh on Friday to meet the arrested nuns. The team included MPs Hibi Eden and Kodikunnil Suresh, who alleged that referring the case to a National Investigation Agency (NIA) court by the Durg sessions court was a deliberate attempt to delay bail. 'There is a conspiracy behind shifting the case to the NIA court. It's intended to prolong the legal process and keep the nuns behind bars,' said Suresh, speaking to reporters at Raipur airport. He added that protests were already underway in Kerala, condemning the arrests. MP Hibi Eden questioned the legality of the detention: 'If it's not the jurisdiction of local police or the sessions court, and the NIA is taking over, then why are the nuns still in jail after five days?' He described the arrests as 'unlawful and unjust' and blamed the ruling BJP for targeting Christians. Eden also alleged that in some northern states, Christians have to seek approval from right-wing groups to conduct religious services. 'This is unacceptable in a secular country,' he said, adding that the Congress delegation had also approached the Union Home Minister and written to the Prime Minister regarding the case. The arrest has sparked a political row, with both the Congress and the CPI(M) slamming the move.
