Northeast has more young population than rest of country: Meghalaya CM
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has said that the northeast region has more young population than the rest of the country. Addressing the 5th Regional Catholic Youth Convention here on Friday he said, "The northeast is not just young it is younger than the rest of India". "This makes our youth not only our greatest strength but also our greatest challenge. How we nurture them will determine the destiny of Nagaland, Meghalaya, and the entire northeast," Sangma said. Emphasising the importance of purpose, goal-setting, and entrepreneurship among youth, he said that "without a goal, you could be working endlessly and achieving nothing." He said, "Reservation has made our youth complacent. We must compete not because we are guaranteed a seat, but because we can win it on merit." Calling for a cultural shift, Sangma urged the youth to believe in themselves and embrace entrepreneurship. "Why do we wait for others to start businesses in our states? Our youth should become the job creators," he said, citing his government's extensive startup and entrepreneurship initiatives in Meghalaya. Underscoring the urgency of youth empowerment, Sangma warned that an unchannelled youth population could become a liability rather than an asset. "The same youth who can build our region can also become a destructive force it all depends on how we guide them," he said. "Above all, be good human beings. No amount of power or success can replace humility, respect, and fear of the Lord," Sangma said. The convention is being organised by North Eastern Regional Youth Commission in collaboration with Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) North East and hosted by Nagaland Catholic Youth Movement.

"Wrong Perspective": Chief Minister On US' Meghalaya Travel Advisory
Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said that the travel advisory issued by the US administration linking the state and other northeastern states with terrorism and violence is wrong, asserting that he would take up the matter with the US Ambassador to India. "The US Embassy has given a totally wrong perspective to Meghalaya and the other northeastern states. I do not believe the advisory is correct," the Chief Minister told the media. Mr Sangma said that he would be meeting the US Ambassador to India soon and discuss the matter with facts and figures concerning the situation in Meghalaya. The Chief Minister said that he would take up the matter with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs as well. The US government had recently issued an advisory asking its citizens to reconsider visiting Meghalaya and other northeastern states due to terrorism and violence. "Do not travel to Manipur due to the threat of violence and crime. There have been no recent reports of violence in Assam, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim, or Tripura. U.S. government employees working in India require prior approval before visiting the states of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, as well as when visiting any areas outside of the capital cities of Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tripura," the US advisory said. Responding to the US advisory, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that it is unfortunate that the US has issued such an advisory with a wrong perception. "We don't know where they (US) collect the information about Meghalaya and the northeast region. Meghalaya is the safest place, and the hospitality of the state is well known," said Tynsong, who also holds the Home portfolio. He said those people who have not visited Meghalaya and met the tourist-friendly people may have all sorts of misgivings and doubts. Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh said the state is expected to host 20 lakh visitors this year, and the tourism department has declared a calendar of events and festivals for the entire year, including the annual Cherry Blossom Festivals. The state government plans to invest over Rs 1,000 crore to develop the tourism-related infrastructure across the state, an official said. According to the official, the tourism sector provides direct and indirect employment to over 50,000 people and is one of the largest job providers in Meghalaya, second only to the state government, which employs over 85,000 people.

Meghalaya BJP leader wants viewpoint in Cherrapunji to be named after Raja Raghuvanshi
GUWAHATI: A BJP leader in Meghalaya has proposed to the state government to name a viewpoint in the Sohra (Cherrapunji) area after slain Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi. In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, James Syiemiong said the 'Raja Memorial Viewpoint' would serve as a symbolic landmark for tourism and awareness in Sohra. '…I would like to propose the development of a 'Raja Memorial Viewpoint'…at or near the location associated with the tragedy. This memorial will not only honour the victims and their families but also serve as a tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all parts of India who wish to pay tribute,' the BJP leader wrote. He also proposed a 'pledge wall' for visitors to commit to the values of safety and justice. 'This initiative can be developed under the Meghalaya Tourism Promotion Scheme or through CSR/public-private partnership models. It would not only preserve memory but also responsibly channel the current public sentiment into meaningful tourism and awareness infrastructure,' he further wrote.

Meghalaya CM announces construction of 'skywalks project' worth Rs 51.7 crore in Mawkdok
Shillong [Meghalya] [India], June 24 (ANI): Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced the construction of a Rs 51.7 crore skywalk in the scenic Mawkdok region of East Khasi Hills. The announcement was made during his visit to Mawkdok village on Monday as part of the state's 'CM Connect' initiative, a public outreach programme to directly engage with local communities. The state government completed the tendering process for the project and confirmed that construction will begin after the current monsoon season. The upcoming skywalk, described as a 'future engineering marvel,' has been designed to offer stunning panoramic views of Mawkdok's lush green valleys and dramatic cliffs. The structure will include a 40-metre-long walkway with a 7-metre-wide cantilever section, making it one of the longest cantilever skywalks in the country. 'This is a project that will change the face of tourism in the area and create new opportunities for the local economy,' said Chief Minister Sangma during his address. He emphasised that the project would not only attract more tourists but also generate employment and benefit local businesses. On November 15, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced the foundation for the 'skywalk project' at Mawkdok in East Khasi Hills at the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival. Mawkdok is a popular viewpoint, and is a must stop destination for tourist during their visit to Sohra tourism circuit. At Mawkdok, one can witness the spectacular view of the valley formed by lush green hills on either side. The Skywalk project is a flagship initiative of the government to further boost tourism in the region. 'Tourism is a very important part of our overall strategy for the region. We are hopeful that the DoNER Ministry would continue to support the region to promote tourism', the Chief Minister said. (ANI)
