Associated Press20 hours ago
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Brittney Griner scored a season-high 22 points and the hot-shooting Atlanta Dream handed the Minnesota Lynx their first loss in 15 home games this season 90-86 on Sunday night.
The Lynx trailed 83-70 with three minutes to go but pulled within three on Napheesa Collier's basket with 11.3 seconds left. Jordin Canada's free throw at 7 seconds iced it.
Atlanta made its first six shots of the fourth quarter before a block by Collier and then made three more in a row. Collier had 13 points in the final period.
Canada had 18 points for the Dream (15-10) and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and Allisha Gray both added 12.
Collier scored 32 points on 14-of-18 shooting to go with eight rebounds, seven assists, four steals and two blocks to lead the Lynx (22-5). Alanna Smith added 12 points, Courtney Williams 11 and Natisha Hiedeman 10.
The Lynx franchise-record home winning streak was the fourth-longest in WNBA history.
Atlanta was 5-of-20 shooting in the third quarter when Minnesota cut a 14-point halftime deficit to as little as three. But in the other three quarters the Dream shot 29 of 45 (71%).
The Lynx shot 56% but after Collier it was 48%. They were also outscored by nine at the foul line.
The Lynx end a five-game homestand on Wednesday when the defending champion New York Liberty visit for the first meeting of the season between the two WNBA finalist from last season.

Patriots CB Christian Gonzalez exits 1st padded practice of training camp with lower body injury

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Cornerback Christian Gonzalez left the Patriots' first full-pads practice of training camp on Monday with a lower body injury. Gonzalez limped off the field following a play during 11-on-11 drills in which he had been matched up with receiver Stefon Diggs. Gonzalez left the field under his own power, but was attended to by the training staff in an area adjacent to the field. He then exited the field in the direction of the locker room and didn't return. Gonzalez earned second-team All-Pro honors last season. He had two interceptions, 59 tackles and 11 pass breakups in 16 games. A first-round draft pick in 2023, Gonzalez appeared in only four games as a rookie before suffering a shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery. ___ AP NFL:

Joe Flacco on Kenny Pickett's injury as quarterback race continues: 'You don't want to see something like that'

Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco spoke about the unfortunate timing of an injury to teammate Kenny Pickett in training camp on Monday. Over the weekend, the tight competition for the starting spot shifted when Pickett sustained a hamstring injury in practice. "I think, listen, I think there's worse timing," Flacco said after Monday's practice. "But at any point when you've been working so hard, you don't want to see something like that." Both Flacco and Pickett joined the Browns ahead of this NFL season and lead the depth chart ahead of rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. The Akron Beacon Journal initially reported that the second week of Browns training camp would include adjustments in the quarterback reps. Come Monday afternoon, Gabriel was filmed on the field during passing drills. With Pickett sidelined and Gabriel getting reps in, Sanders recently had an impressive showing late into the first week of training camp. ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi counted that Sanders had more scrimmage sets than Flacco throughout Week 1 of camp. Sanders was also filmed throwing touchdown passes over the defense in training. However, his reps had not come with the first-team offense. All four quarterbacks are fresh faces to the Browns locker room, apart from Flacco, who had a one-year stint with the Browns in 2023. Pickett joined Cleveland after two years with the Pittsburgh Steelers and a season with the Philadelphia Eagles. In his lone, Super Bowl-winning year with the Birds, Pickett made five appearances and completed 25 of 42 attempts for two touchdowns. Flacco's long career was mostly spent in Baltimore, where he was the signal caller for the Ravens for 11 years. He has since played for the Denver Broncos, New York Jets and Indianapolis Colts. The Browns had Deshaun Watson, Jameis Winston and Dorian Thompson-Robinson in the position just last season. They had a complete wipeout of their quarterbacks after a 3-14 season, starting with a season-ending Achilles tear for Watson in Week 7. He then re-ruptured his Achilles after rolling his ankle during the rehab process, putting his availability for 2025 in doubt. Watson's contract will count just under $36 million against the Browns' salary cap this season, per Spotrac. Despite Pickett's injury, the Browns have previously expressed they will not trade any of their quarterbacks. Cleveland will open their season on September 9 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Report: Notre Dame to unofficially host 5-star Penn State commit in hopes of a flip

The recruiting battles between Notre Dame and Penn State continue, and this time it's the Irish attempting to flip a 2027 Nittany Lions commit. Kemon Spell made his verbal to PSU in August of 2024, but according to a report by 247Sports Tom Loy, the 5-foot, 9-inch and 205-pound star running back will make an unofficial trip to South Bend when they host Texas A&M on Sept. 13th. That's not the only visit the country's No. 9 overall prospect according the 247Sports Composite will visit, as trips to see Penn State, Florida State and Alabama will happen during the season as well. The report also states that Spell will try and make it out to a game against Ohio State, all of which means that he most likely could be heading towards flipping to another school. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, but the Irish would love to have another 5-star prospect entering its program. At the current moment, Notre Dame has three commits in the 2027 class, highlighted by quarterback Teddy Jarrard. We are sure that he'd love to see Spell in the backfield with him in South Bend.
