Haryana: Mobile internet suspended in Nuh ahead of Abhishek Yatra
The order was issued by the Home Department under the authority of Additional Chief Secretary Sumita Misra.
The move appears to have come all of a sudden as Nuh Deputy Commissioner Vishram Kumar Meena, on Wednesday, had told The Indian Express that there is no plan for any internet ban.
However, on Sunday night, Meena said that after a meeting with all stakeholders in the evening it was decided that mobile internet will be suspended in the district.
'All preparations are in place. Cutting across party, community and religious lines there will be people at 41 welcome points for the yatris… I personally reviewed the preparations today too and the yatra will be conducted peacefully and smoothly'.
The order states that the ban is aimed at preventing the spread of misinformation and maintaining law and order in the district.
It has been issued under Section 20 of the Telecommunications Act, 2023, and Rule 3 of the Telecommunications (Temporary Suspension of Services) Rules, 2024. The suspension covers mobile internet services (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, CDMA, GPRS), bulk SMS (excluding banking and mobile recharge), and all dongle services on mobile networks.
Voice calls, individual SMS, banking SMS, mobile recharge services, internet services provided through broadband and lease lines for corporate and domestic households will remain unaffected.

More Indian students choosing Europe for higher education
While Indian students heading to foreign universities have declined across the top three destination countries – Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom – member states of the European Union are seeing a steady rise in the number of Indians travelling to pursue higher studies. Canada witnessed a 32% drop, with permits falling from 2.78 lakh to 1.89 lakh, the United States saw a 34% decrease, with F1 visas dropping from 1.31 lakh to 86,110 between fiscal years 2023 and 2024. The UK on the other hand recorded a 26% reduction with sponsored student visas issued to Indians decreasing from 1.20 lakh to 88,732 during the same time period. This reduction has come in the backdrop of tightening immigration measures including introduction of caps on student intake and restrictions on dependent visas. On the other hand, Indian students travelling to EU member states for higher education have risen by close to 80% in the last five years. From close to 50,000 students in 2018, the number has jumped to over 90,000 in 2023-24. While 56,255 students headed to foreign universities in the EU member states in 2018-19, this number jumped to over 90,000 by 2023-24. The figures for 2019-20 and 2022-23 were 66,385 and 84,736 respectively. According to data from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), as of January 1, 2024, over 11.6 lakh Indian students were studying in higher education institutions abroad. While the top three destinations accounted for 31% of Indian students collectively, EU member states accounted for 8% – a figure that has steadily been rising. 'Europe is an attractive destination for Indian students because it offers diversity of programs and a richness of cultural experience. Already 90,000 Indian students are studying in Europe…this speaks for itself. With the EU India bilateral relations with India going full steam ahead, more opportunities for people to people contact will be created,' European Union Ambassador Herve Delphin told The Indian Express. Europe has over 4,000 higher education institutions and 17.5 million tertiary education students (including college and vocational courses). It has close to 1.35 million educators and 1.17 million researchers. EU member states also offer the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's degree (EMJMD), a scholarship awarded on a competitive basis to select students which covers tuition fee, travel costs and living allowance. Since 2004, 50,000 students have got the scholarship grant. Among those who got the grant is 23 year old Arch. 'I was in no mood to go abroad. So, I applied to get admission in PG course in India through CUET. But that was way too competitive – to a damaging extent. Bacho ka dil toot jaata hai (kids get their heart broken because of the exam). I studied from a private university in Gujarat… I decided to take a gap year,' she told The Indian Express. 'I took a gap year for the scholarship because it's so competitive and at the same time prestigious. I was elated when I found out that I got in. I'm going to Poland and Ireland for a Masters in psychology under the Global Minds programme,' she said.

‘Regrettable': India on reports of eggs being thrown at Rath Yatra in Canada
India on Monday described as ' regrettable ' reports of eggs allegedly thrown at devotees during a Rath Yatra procession in Canada's Toronto. The Ministry of External Affairs said that the matter had been taken up with Canadian authorities. This came after a woman participating in the procession noticed eggs allegedly being thrown at them from a nearby building and posted about it on social media, The Indian Express reported. The video was widely shared on social media. 'We have seen reports regarding disruption created by mischievous elements during the Rath Yatra procession in Toronto,' ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement. Our response to media queries regarding an incident during the Rath Yatra procession in Toronto, Canada 🔗 — Randhir Jaiswal (@MEAIndia) July 14, 2025 Jaiswal said that the 'despicable acts' were regrettable and against the spirit of the festival, which seeks to promote unity, inclusivity and social harmony. 'We have strongly taken up the matter with Canadian authorities to hold the perpetrators of the act accountable,' he added. 'We hope the Canadian government will take necessary action to protect the religious rights of people,' the external affairs ministry said. The alleged incident took place at a procession taken out during the Chariot Fest Ratha Yatra organised by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness in Toronto between July 11 and July 13, India Today reported. The celebration brings the idols of the Hindu deities Jagannatha, Baladeva and Subhadra 'out from the temple and onto the streets, blessing everyone with their merciful glances', according to ISKON's website. Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday expressed concern about eggs being thrown at the event and said that the incident had caused deep anguish to the residents of the state. 'Such incidents not only grievously hurt the sentiments of Lord Jagannatha's devotees worldwide, but also cause deep anguish to the people of Odisha, for whom this festival holds profound emotional and cultural significance,' the Biju Janata Dal leader said on X. Patnaik urged the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Odisha to take the matter seriously and called on the external affairs ministry to 'register a strong protest with the Canadian authorities' about the incident. During the Rath Yatra in Odisha, the idols of Balabhadra, Subhadra and Jagannath are carried in chariots from the Jagannath temple to the Gundicha temple 2.6 kms away, where they stay for nine days. This year, the festival began on June 27 and concluded on July 5.

Journalist Ajit Anjum booked for video about Bihar voter roll revision
Journalist Ajit Anjum was booked for allegedly interfering in the Bihar voter roll revision process and for allegedly provoking communal discord, Newslaundry reported. A first information report was filed against Anjum under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the 1951 Representation of Peoples Act after he visited a polling booth in Bihar's Ballia on Saturday, The Indian Express reported. In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Anjum had claimed that he had found irregularities in the electoral process, with several enumeration forms at the booth not having photos of the applicants and others that had been partially filled or not having signatures. Anjum's YouTube channel has 75 lakh subscribers. He was booked under sections pertaining to criminal trespass, disobeying a lawful order, preventing a public servant from doing their duty and hurting religious sentiments, The Indian Express reported. The FIR against Anjum was filed based on a complaint by a booth-level officer named Mohammed Ansrarul Haque. The Begusarai district administration alleged that Anjum, his associates and cameraperson had made unauthorised videos of the voter roll revision process. 'In the video, the YouTuber identified people of a particular caste by forcefully checking sensitive documents of a particular polling station and false propaganda was spread about the possibility of incomplete documents and fake signatures,' the administration alleged. Anjum on Monday said that a Muslim block-level officer was 'being used as a scapegoat ' against him. 'Instead of addressing the questions raised in the video, the administration is resorting to intimidation tactics,' Anjum said on social media. 'All I'm saying is that I'm right here in Begusarai. If needed, I will fight up to the Supreme Court. I won't be scared.' The Digipub News India Foundation, an association of independent digital news organisations and journalists, said that the FIR against Anjum was a direct assault on independent journalism. The 'vague allegations' against Anjum were neither credible nor reason enough for an FIR, the news association said in a statement. 'Instead of addressing those legitimate questions, the Election Commission, through this FIR, has attempted to intimidate not just him but all independent journalists who dare to report from the ground,' it added.
