Scooby-Doo, the classic animated franchise from Hanna-Barbera that began as a Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? on CBS' Saturday morning kids-themed sked in 1969, is confirmed to debut in a live action format on the small screen. Netflix has given an eight-episode order to a live series that will uncover how the mystery-solving gang, and their beloved dog, first teamed up to crack the haunting case that started it all.
The official logline per Netflix: During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.
From Warner Bros. TV, the untitled Scooby-Doo series is created by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg (Jumanji) and executive producer Greg Berlanti. Appelbaum and Rosenberg will serve as showrunners and executive produce via their Midnight Radio banner. Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman of Berlanti Productions and Midnight Radio's Andre Nemec and Jeff Pinkner also executive produce.
'One of my first and favorite jobs in Hollywood was sitting with Scooby-Doo creators Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera while they signed animation cells,' said Greg Berlanti in a statement. 'Josh and Scott and everyone at Midnight Radio have crafted a story that captures their amazing spirits and their genius creation. We are grateful to them and everyone at Warners and Netflix for the partnership in helping bring this iteration of Scooby-Doo to life!'
No casting for this new Scooby-Doo entry has been announced at press time.
Last fall, Velma, the adult comedy mystery from Mindy Kaling and Charlie Grandy based on the character Velma Dinkley, was canceled by Max after two seasons. Velma, of course, was just one of the endless Scooby-Doo spin-off TV series, which include The New Scooby-Doo Movies, Scooby's All-Star Laff-A-Lympics, The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Show, Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo, The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, What's New, Scooby-Doo?, Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue!, Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!, and Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?
In 2002, a live-action Scooby-Doo film was released starring Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellini as Velma. It spawned a 2004 sequel. An animated feature, Scoob!, was also released on the big screen in 2020.

'KPop Demon Hunters' Breaks All-Time Record

Netflix announced on Tuesday that KPop Demon Hunters has broken an all-time record. According to the popular streaming service, the wildly popular animated film is now the most-watched original animated film in Netflix history. The movie, released on June 20, stars Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop and Ken Jeong. It's rated PG and is one hour and 35 minutes long. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the animated flick has been well-received by audiences and critics alike. The Tomatometer (critics) score sits at 97% (58 reviews), while the Popcornmeter (audiences) score is at 92% (4.5 out of 5 stars) with a whopping 2,500-plus ratings. "When they aren't selling out stadiums, K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira and Zoey use their secret identities as badass demon hunters to protect their fans from an ever-present supernatural threat," a description of the film from Rotten Tomatoes reads. "Together, they must face their biggest enemy yet — an irresistible rival boy band of demons in disguise." "In the hands of directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, it's a(n) endearing, beautifully animated crowd-pleaser with a dorkily sincere love for the pop culture phenomena it embeds itself in," Wilson Chapman of IndieWire said. On IMDB, the film has garnered a 7.8 out of 10 after over 40,000 ratings. "K-pop" is short for Korean pop music and is a genre that originates from South Korea but has become popular around the globe, according to "Characterized by its catchy melodies, high-production value, visually stunning choreography, and an array of talented artists, K-pop is more than just music — it's a cultural phenomenon," the website adds. K-pop began developing in the 1950s but didn't become the global hit it is now until around the 1990s. It encompasses different styles, including pop, rock, hip-hop and electronic music. Netflix just added this gritty crime drama you (probably) haven't seen — and it's already crashed the top 10

Netflix is giving a Starz crime drama a second shot at finding its audience after it was removed from the streaming service mere weeks after the show ended. As of July 23, all three seasons of Rebecca Cutter's gritty crime series "Hightown" are now available to watch on the streamer in the US. The series originally aired on Starz and ran for 25 episodes, spread across three seasons between 2020 and 2024. The finale aired on March 8, 2024... and Starz promptly removed it at the end of that same month. I was confident the show would get a bit of a boost once it landed on Netflix, and it looks like I was right. As of our latest update, "Hightown," the show's jumped right into the Netflix Top 10 list. It's currently sitting in 5th place, behind new arrivals like "The Hunting Wives" and Netflix's latest hit original, "Untamed." How's that for finding new fans? If you'd spotted the new crime drama and were trying to decide whether to stream "Hightown" on Netflix yourself, you can find more info about the streamer's new arrival below. What is 'Hightown' about? "Hightown" is a crime drama set in Provincetown, Massachusetts. There, we meet Jackie Quiñones (Monica Raymund), a hard-partying National Marine Fisheries Service Agent struggling with addiction. When she discovers the body of a murdered woman, Jackie's life is upended and she attempts to start working towards sobriety... but grows convinced it's down to her to solve the murder. At odds with Sergeant Ray Abruzzo (James Badge Dale), one of the men investigating organized crime in the region, and the local opioid epidemic. In addition to Raymund and Dale, the series also stars Riley Voelkel, Shane Harper. Atkins Estimond, Amaury Nolasco, and Dohn Norwood, among others. Should you stream 'Hightown' on Netflix? "Hightown" seems well-suited to become a Netflix hit. Crime dramas usually play well on the streamer (soapy family crime drama "The Waterfront" is a recent successful example), and it comes reasonably well-recommended. At the time of writing, the show's first season holds an 80% approval rating on the review aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes, indicating generally favorable reactions (other seasons do not have a score, at present), and the site's consensus reads: "Monica Raymund's charms rise above any formulaic tendencies in "Hightown's" highly entertaining first season." Reviewing the first season for The Hollywood Reporter, Inkoo Kang called the show "competently crafted, if not particularly memorable," adding: ""Hightown" doesn't ever reach full beach-noir status, but it does grow organically darker and more heartbreaking as the season progresses." Matt Fagerholm, meanwhile, said: "what prevents 'Hightown' from devolving into a drag is the enormous appeal of its leading lady, Raymund, who doesn't shy away from flashing smiles of exhilaration when she finds herself capable of being the hero after all." The Guardian's Lucy Mangan gave the show a 3-star rating, calling it a "slick but sombre" affair, describing the series as having " a solid, formulaic base" but succeeding because it "has such a gift in Raymund as Quiñones", adding: ""Hightown" itself probably won't win any awards – although it does undoubtedly deserve the particular praise reserved for all things that are better than they need to be - but she [Quiñones] should." Some of the audience reactions on the platform are pretty positive, too; I'm seeing plenty of top ratings and praise for both the performances and the writing (though others weren't so taken with the show or some of its content). On balance, though, if you were looking for a new crime drama to occupy your time, then "Hightown" sounds like it could be worth adding to your Netflix watchlist. If you've already seen "Hightown", or it doesn't sound like your kind of show, we can still help you find something new to stream.
