'KPop Demon Hunters' Breaks All-Time Record

Yahoo6 days ago
Netflix announced on Tuesday that KPop Demon Hunters has broken an all-time record.
According to the popular streaming service, the wildly popular animated film is now the most-watched original animated film in Netflix history.
The movie, released on June 20, stars Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop and Ken Jeong. It's rated PG and is one hour and 35 minutes long.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the animated flick has been well-received by audiences and critics alike. The Tomatometer (critics) score sits at 97% (58 reviews), while the Popcornmeter (audiences) score is at 92% (4.5 out of 5 stars) with a whopping 2,500-plus ratings.
"When they aren't selling out stadiums, K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira and Zoey use their secret identities as badass demon hunters to protect their fans from an ever-present supernatural threat," a description of the film from Rotten Tomatoes reads. "Together, they must face their biggest enemy yet — an irresistible rival boy band of demons in disguise."
"In the hands of directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, it's a(n) endearing, beautifully animated crowd-pleaser with a dorkily sincere love for the pop culture phenomena it embeds itself in," Wilson Chapman of IndieWire said.
On IMDB, the film has garnered a 7.8 out of 10 after over 40,000 ratings.
"K-pop" is short for Korean pop music and is a genre that originates from South Korea but has become popular around the globe, according to 90DayKorean.com.
"Characterized by its catchy melodies, high-production value, visually stunning choreography, and an array of talented artists, K-pop is more than just music — it's a cultural phenomenon," the website adds.
K-pop began developing in the 1950s but didn't become the global hit it is now until around the 1990s. It encompasses different styles, including pop, rock, hip-hop and electronic music.

The Naked Gun Reboot a 'One-Off' says Star Liam Neeson

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Naked Gun's 2025 reboot will likely be the franchise's last, the film's star Liam Neeson tells Newsweek in an exclusive interview. Why It Matters Neeson's turn as Frank Drebin Jr. in Paramount's reboot of The Naked Gun has reignited interest in slapstick comedies and brought new life to a classic franchise. The film's strong box office performance and overwhelmingly positive critical reception prompted speculation about possible sequels. Liam Neeson attends "The Naked Gun" U.K. premiere at Cineworld Leicester Square on July 22, 2025, in London, England. Liam Neeson attends "The Naked Gun" U.K. premiere at Cineworld Leicester Square on July 22, 2025, in London, Paramount Pictures What To Know The Naked Gun reboot, which was released on Friday, accumulated over $28 million globally on its opening weekend—$17 million in North America and $11.5 million internationally—ranking among the most successful comedy releases of this decade. Despite these numbers and a high score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Neeson told Newsweek that he doesn't anticipate returning to the role for a sequel. "I think it's a one-off, yeah," Neeson, 73, said of the franchise's future. "And if it succeeds, good." Neeson stars as the son of Leslie Nielsen's iconic character Frank Drebin from the beloved trilogy of the 1980s and 1990s. Co-starring Pamela Anderson and Paul Walter Hauser, the reboot is directed by Akiva Schaffer and produced by Seth MacFarlane. It delivers a barrage of visual gags and slapstick humor reminiscent of the original films while introducing the franchise to a new generation. "I think the film's going to have a few giggles and a few laughs in it, and God, we all need that at the minute," Neeson said. "I think it's probably a one-off. Not that the experience wasn't great, it was. It's terrific, working with Pamela, Danny Huston, all these terrific guys." The reboot's response from critics has been overwhelmingly positive. The Independent's Clarisse Loughrey awarded the film four stars, calling it "a masterclass in buffoonery." Rotten Tomatoes registered a very high rating for the film, making it one of the best-reviewed comedies of the 2020s, per Forbes. The original 1988 film The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! was directed by David Zucker and starred Nielsen, Priscilla Presley and Ricardo Montalban. It grossed over $78 million domestically, per Box Office Mojo, and launched two sequels, solidifying its place as a comedy classic. What People Are Saying Producer Seth MacFarlane said of Neeson's fit for the role, in an interview with The New York Times: "Liam is probably the only actor alive who in the 21st century could play Frank Drebin....[performers like Nielsen] were people who all had that gravitas that when you had them saying absurd things, it was just priceless since there was so much weight to what they were saying. We don't make those kinds of actors in Hollywood anymore." Original franchise director David Zucker voiced disinterest in the reboot in an interview with Fox News Digital: "I don't see any reason to see it." What Happens Next The possibility of a sequel remains uncertain. While strong box office receipts and critical acclaim could prompt studio interest in continuing the rebooted franchise, Neeson's statements suggest fans should not expect him to reprise his role. If the franchise continues, it may do so with new talent. In the meantime, the impact of The Naked Gun's return underscores both the viability of legacy comedy revivals and the enduring appeal of well-executed slapstick. SPLINTER CELL Series Creator Derek Kolstad Explains Why Sam Fisher Is 'Not the Best' — GeekTyrant

Netflix's upcoming animated series Splinter Cell: Deathwatch is bringing back stealth icon Sam Fisher, but not exactly the way longtime fans might expect. Series creator Derek Kolstad, the writer behind John Wick and Nobody , recently opened up about his approach to the character, and he doesn't see Sam Fisher as ultimate ghost operative. Kolstad told Den of Geek: 'One of the things that I like about Sam Fisher, John Wick, and Hutch Mansell [from Nobody] is that, yes, they're pretty badass at what they do but, more importantly, they're not the best. They get beat up.' That an interesting outlook considering Fisher's reputation as one of gaming's most elite covert agents, but Kolstad seems intent on making him more grounded and vulnerable. This means that Deathwatch might lean toward a grittier, hands-on style similar to Splinter Cell: Conviction , rather than the purely shadow-driven approach from the original trilogy. In the early games, Fisher was a master of infiltration, relying on high-tech gadgets and his iconic night vision goggles to ghost through missions without leaving a trace. Kolstad went on to explain: 'You look at the games, and he's incredibly adept and comfortable at tech, but sometimes a bullet or a blade or the ripping out of some cord is your best line of defense.' That philosophy hints at a Fisher who isn't invincible, and whose fights might be a little more brutal and desperate this time around. But Kolstad believes the heart of the character remains the same. 'I always loved the world of Splinter Cell. I'm a huge fan of army-of-one [stories] if you do it right. And yet, even though he's had hard decisions to make, it's just refreshing that Sam Fisher's a hero. 'He has moments of empathy and having to do this thing when both decisions are wrong, but one is a little less wrong at the cost of his soul and his own personal life, but for the benefit of the rest of us.' Splinter Cell: Deathwatch will feature Liev Schreiber as the voice of Sam Fisher, stepping into the role long held by Michael Ironside. The series made its first appearance at the Annecy Festival, where director Guillaume Dousse revealed some of the visual and tonal inspirations for the show, citing Ghost in the Shell , Ozark , and even elements of Mission: Impossible . Producer Hugo Revon added: 'It was interesting to have this aging character, not totally like the Tom Cruise version but more realistic, and more weathered by life.' The series is set to hit Netflix in late 2025, joining the platform's growing roster of video game adaptations like Castlevania and the upcoming Devil May Cry series. Meanwhile, fans are still waiting on that elusive Splinter Cell remake, which Ubisoft teased years ago but hasn't delivered any meaningful updates on. So, how do you feel about a Sam Fisher who isn't the best at what he does?
