Cooperatives Urged To Implement Digitalisation Immediately To Remain Competitive
Cooperatives Commission of Malaysia chairman Datuk Ahmad Norihan Jalal said the current business environment in Malaysia was challenging and required cooperatives to use technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT).
'We cannot be complacent, the business world will continue to change and cooperatives need to ride this wave of change. If cooperatives don't adapt, they will be left behind,' he said at a media conference after attending Koperasi Sahabat Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia Berhad's (Koop Sahabat) annual general meeting here today.
Ahmad Norihan said digitalisation would speed up various process in cooperatives, from internal administration to e-commerce, and will not only boost efficiency but open up more job opportunities.
'Digital transformation in cooperatives must be seen as a long term investment. AI, IoT and digital systems aren't new things,' he added.
Ahmad Norihan praised Koop Sahabat for launching an AI-based virtual support system, YATI, that was capable of giving immediate feedback and speed up access for its members, stating that the cooperative was brave in being innovative.
Meanwhile Koop Sahabat chairman Mohd Najib Mohd Noor announced a dividend of 10 per cent for the 2024 financial year involving a total of RM10.5 million for 449,848 members.
'Our revenue was rather high with a profit of RM37 million, about a 140 per cent rise from the previous year,' he said, adding that the Ar-Rahnu business was the highest contributor to the cooperative's revenue, followed by investments in real estate and housing projects.

Ringgit rises as traders turn cautious ahead of US tariff move
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar on Thursday, rebounding from a weaker close the day before, as traders turned cautious and pared greenback holdings ahead of the July 9 expiry of the United States' 90-day tariff pause, an analyst said. At 8 am, the local note stood at 4.2205/2295 against the greenback, up from Wednesday's close of 4.2245/2305. Meanwhile, the US Dollar Index eased 0.04 per cent to 96.776, after US labour market data pointed to weakness in June. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US private sector shed 33,000 jobs in June, according to payroll data firm Automatic Data Processing (ADP), defying market expectations of a 99,000 increase. "Job losses were most apparent in services sectors such as financial activities and professional and business services. Tonight's nonfarm payroll (NFP) report will be closely watched, given the positive correlation between ADP and NFP readings,' he told Bernama. Mohd Afzanizam said signs of a weakening labour market have started to emerge, which could influence the US Federal Reserve's interest rate outlook and strengthen the case for rate cuts. "On Wednesday, the ringgit weakened to RM4.2275 from RM4.1980, marking a 0.7 per cent depreciation. This was likely due to profit-taking ahead of the expiry of the US tariff pause,' he added. He also noted possible signs of concessions from the US government, citing the case of Vietnam, where reciprocal tariffs were reduced to 20 per cent. "Given these developments, the ringgit may remain range-bound as market participants stay cautious ahead of tonight's NFP data and the upcoming US tariff decision,' he added. At the opening, the ringgit was mixed against a basket of major and ASEAN currencies. It strengthened against the British pound to 5.7606/7728 from 5.7859/7941, but slipped versus the euro to 4.9793/9900 from 4.9748/9818 and fell against the Japanese yen to 2.9405/9470 from 2.9316/9360. The local note was firmer against the Singapore dollar at 3.3154/3230 from 3.3167/3217, edged up against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.7/260.4 from 259.9/260.5, and rose against the Philippine peso to 7.48/7.50 from 7.49/7.51. Contractors to be chosen for second cross-border bridge project
NARATHIWAT: Construction of the second bridge connecting Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, and Sungai Golok here is progressing as planned, with the Thai authorities currently in the process of selecting a contractor to carry out the project. Sungai Golok Highway Division assistant officer Teetuch Mad-adum (pic) said the contractor selection process is expected to be completed by September at the latest, in line with the timeline agreed upon by Malaysia and Thailand. 'We are confident that a suitable contractor will be identified by September, with the initial shortlist involving 10 companies,' he said. Teetuch added that the six-lane bridge, which will be built parallel to the existing Muhibbah Bridge, is expected to have a significant impact on local economic development and further strengthen bilateral relations between Malaysia and Thailand. 'The purpose of this bridge is to widen the existing route. Once completed, it will improve the flow of economic activity and ease cross-border movement,' he said, adding that the completion of the bridge will also have an impact on nearby illegal jetties. He said there had been no objections from local residents regarding the project, and all studies conducted so far indicated no negative impact. 'This bridge is being built specifically to stimulate economic growth, and the entire process has proceeded smoothly without any major obstacles,' he said, Bernama reported. On financing, Teetuch said the construction cost would be shared by both countries, with Malaysia allocating RM17mil and Thailand RM32mil, which includes related infrastructure upgrades. He added that construction is expected to begin as early as September, following the contractor selection, or by December at the latest, with completion targeted within 36 months. Previously, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the project involves building a new 117.3m bridge parallel to the existing structure, along with upgrading works on the Muhibbah Bridge. In April, the media reported that the Thai Cabinet had approved the construction of a second bridge across Sungai Golok. Thailand is Malaysia's seventh-largest global trading partner and the third-largest within Asean. In 2024, bilateral trade between the two countries reached US$25.03bil (RM114.56bil). For the period January to February 2025, trade increased to US$3.96bil (RM17.65bil), up from US$3.67bil (RM16.80bil) in the same period last year.

‘AI can only help journalism'
Future of media: Abang Johari (centre), opening the Sarawak media conference on the use of artificial intelligence. — Bernama KUCHING: Artificial intelligence (AI) can never replace the human core of journalism despite enhancing the way media practitioners work, says Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg. The Sarawak Premier said human judgement, moral courage, integrity and empathy were the essence of journalism. 'These are the values that no machine can replicate. In truth, technology is at its most powerful when it works hand-in-hand with humanity, not when it replaces it. 'That is why the future of journalism is not artificial but augmented. 'It is about enabling journalists to do more, reach more and inform more with greater accuracy and depth,' he said when opening the Sarawak media conference here yesterday. The two-day conference, themed 'Artificial Intelligence: Shaping the Future of Media and Journalism', is held in conjunction with the state-level National Journalists' Day (Hawana) celebration. Abang Johari said the theme reflected the rapid evolution of the media landscape and the need for all stakeholders to adapt and respond constructively. He said AI was already being used to generate news reports, translate speeches in real time, verify facts at lightning speed and detect disinformation. In this respect, Abang Johari called on journalists to uphold ethics while using AI. He said journalism was not just the reporting of events but the pursuit of truth. 'Today's journalists are not only storytellers, they are guardians of public trust. 'That trust must be defended with every decision we make, including the use of technology,' he added. Abang Johari also said Sarawak was building an ecosystem for AI and innovation to support the state's development towards high-income status by 2030. He said this includes setting up the Sarawak Artificial Intelligence Centre (SAIC) as a centre of excellence for AI research, policy development and human capital training. 'Through SAIC, we are not only developing local expertise in AI but ensuring that the deployment of these technologies is governed by a strong ethical framework that protects public trust and democratic values,' he said.
