Ringgit rises as traders turn cautious ahead of US tariff move

The Star03-07-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar on Thursday, rebounding from a weaker close the day before, as traders turned cautious and pared greenback holdings ahead of the July 9 expiry of the United States' 90-day tariff pause, an analyst said.
At 8 am, the local note stood at 4.2205/2295 against the greenback, up from Wednesday's close of 4.2245/2305.
Meanwhile, the US Dollar Index eased 0.04 per cent to 96.776, after US labour market data pointed to weakness in June.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US private sector shed 33,000 jobs in June, according to payroll data firm Automatic Data Processing (ADP), defying market expectations of a 99,000 increase.
"Job losses were most apparent in services sectors such as financial activities and professional and business services. Tonight's nonfarm payroll (NFP) report will be closely watched, given the positive correlation between ADP and NFP readings,' he told Bernama.
Mohd Afzanizam said signs of a weakening labour market have started to emerge, which could influence the US Federal Reserve's interest rate outlook and strengthen the case for rate cuts.
"On Wednesday, the ringgit weakened to RM4.2275 from RM4.1980, marking a 0.7 per cent depreciation. This was likely due to profit-taking ahead of the expiry of the US tariff pause,' he added.
He also noted possible signs of concessions from the US government, citing the case of Vietnam, where reciprocal tariffs were reduced to 20 per cent.
"Given these developments, the ringgit may remain range-bound as market participants stay cautious ahead of tonight's NFP data and the upcoming US tariff decision,' he added.
At the opening, the ringgit was mixed against a basket of major and ASEAN currencies.
It strengthened against the British pound to 5.7606/7728 from 5.7859/7941, but slipped versus the euro to 4.9793/9900 from 4.9748/9818 and fell against the Japanese yen to 2.9405/9470 from 2.9316/9360.
The local note was firmer against the Singapore dollar at 3.3154/3230 from 3.3167/3217, edged up against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.7/260.4 from 259.9/260.5, and rose against the Philippine peso to 7.48/7.50 from 7.49/7.51. However, it eased against the Thai baht to 13.0391/0742 from 13.0233/0482. - Bernama

Bank Muamalat cuts base rates after OPR reduction

KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd has adjusted its base rates following Bank Negara Malaysia's move to lower the overnight policy rate (OPR). Effective July 14, 2025, the bank will reduce its Standardised Base Rate (SBR) from 3.00 per cent to 2.75 per cent, its Base Rate (BR) from 3.81 per cent to 3.56 per cent, and its Base Financing Rate (BFR) from 6.81 per cent to 6.56 per cent. "This will affect all floating-rate financing packages pegged to the SBR, BR and BFR. "In line with the decrease in SBR, BR and BFR, Bank Muamalat's FTA-i deposit rates will also be revised accordingly," the bank said. Bank Muamalat president and chief executive officer Khairul Kamarudin said the rate adjustment aligns with Bank Negara's recent decision to lower the OPR to 2.75 per cent. He added that the revision supports the bank's ongoing efforts to promote economic growth while fulfilling the expectations of its stakeholders.

Expo 2025 Osaka elevates Japan-Malaysia economic relations

KUALA LUMPUR: The Expo 2025 Osaka serves as a launchpad for deeper cooperation in key economic sectors, proving to be a significant platform for enhancing economic relations between Japan and Malaysia, according to the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO). JETRO Kuala Lumpur managing director Koichi Takano noted that the expo presents a great opportunity to elevate cooperation between Japan and Malaysia to a new level as it opens up a long-term investment space that will continue to deliver benefits. "Looking ahead, JETRO anticipates robust growth in investment across decarbonisation, renewable energy, digital technology, the halal sector and high-value services. "Malaysia's role as the ASEAN chair in 2025 is expected to further accelerate cooperation, particularly through its involvement in the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) initiative championed by Japan," he told Bernama. The AZEC Summit, scheduled to be held in Malaysia this year, marks a significant milestone in energy collaboration between the two countries. According to Takano, the ongoing negotiation of the Joint Crediting Mechanism is expected to unlock more opportunities for Japanese environmental technologies to be applied in Malaysia. "JETRO has compiled a catalogue of Japanese companies contributing to decarbonisation and is actively supporting their expansion in the Malaysian market. "These efforts are complemented by growing investment interest in consumer-related sectors such as food products, healthcare, education and Japanese lifestyle services," he noted. To unlock the full potential of Japan-Malaysia trade ties in the coming decade, Takano stressed that strengthening the existing relationship of trust is the most critical step. He said Japan, once Malaysia's largest investor, retains strong ties with the country, and JETRO remains committed to serving as a bridge for future cooperation. "Economic security, energy transition and resilient supply chains are shared priorities. Building on our longstanding trust, we can create lasting partnerships that benefit both nations. "JETRO will continue to lead efforts in business matching, market entry support and strategic engagement, ensuring Japanese companies remain active and invested in Malaysia's future," he said. Japanese firms sees Malaysia as a hub In addition, Takano said Japanese companies are also taking advantage of strategic tax incentives and increasingly considering Malaysia for regional headquarters. He believed that Malaysia's attractiveness is further enhanced by its competitive cost base and growing role in regional value chains. "JETRO is playing a key role in supporting these developments by providing updated information on policies, investment incentives and strategic sector opportunities. "With Malaysia's current economic growth at 5.1 per cent, compared with 3.6 per cent the previous year, Japanese firms are showing increased confidence in the local market," he added. The organisation's 2024 Business Conditions Survey revealed that profitability among Japanese companies in Malaysia continues to exceed the ASEAN average – attributable to strong performance in manufacturing, particularly in sectors such as electrical and electronics, food processing, transport equipment and general machinery. Takano explained that Japanese small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have long contributed to Malaysia's manufacturing sector and continue to evolve with the changing economic landscape. He expressed optimism that extending local SME support schemes to Japanese SMEs could further strengthen their resilience and integration. TVET reform a shared challenge In addressing workforce development, JETRO acknowledged the Malaysian government's efforts through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) reforms as Japan also faces similar labour challenges and is responding by promoting robotics, artificial intelligence and strategic foreign workforce integration. He emphasised that these shared challenges require long-term commitment, continuous dialogue and policy coordination. "Malaysia's Look East Policy has played a key role in fostering bilateral understanding, with more than 28,000 Malaysians having studied in Japan to date. "Collaboration in education also continues through institutions such as the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology and the University of Tsukuba Malaysia," he noted.

Rubio arrives in Malaysia for meetings with Asean allies

Published on: Thursday, July 10, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 10, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrives at Subang Air Base to attend the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. - BERNAMA Kuala Lumpur: US secretary of state Marco Rubio joined his Southeast Asian counterparts in Malaysia today, with US tariffs and China's growing influence in the region likely to dominate talks. Rubio's arrival in Kuala Lumpur for a meeting of Asean foreign ministers came after US president Donald Trump ramped up his trade war this week. US officials said ahead of the trip that Washington was 'prioritising' its commitment to East Asia and Southeast Asia. But Trump has also threatened more than 20 countries, many in Asia, with punitive duties ranging from 20% to 50%, and announced a 50% toll on copper imports and a possible 200% tariff on pharmaceuticals. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim warned Asia's top diplomats yesterday of a new era where tariffs were among the 'sharpened instruments of geopolitical rivalry'. 'This is no passing storm, it is a new weather of our time,' Anwar said as the meeting of the 10-nation bloc got underway. Trump said Monday that the duties he had suspended in April would snap back – even more steeply – on Aug 1. Among those targeted were top trade partners Japan and South Korea, which each face 25% tariffs. Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Myanmar – all Asean members – face duties ranging from 20% to 40% if they do not strike deals with Washington by Trump's new deadline. The levels were not too far from those originally threatened in April, although some rates were notably lower this time. Vietnam, which is also an Asean member, is one of only two countries to have reached a tentative agreement with Trump. During his first visit to Asia as secretary of state, Rubio will attend a post-ministerial conference and a meeting by East Asian foreign ministers which will also see Japan, South Korea and China participating. A senior US official said the issue of tariffs was expected to be raised at the talks in Kuala Lumpur, and that Rubio would likely tell Asean that the US wants to 'rebalance' its trade relationships. Rubio's visit coincides with that of his Russian and Chinese counterparts, Sergei Lavrov and Wang Yi. Territorial disputes Chinese actions in the Asia-Pacific region and its disputed waterways are in focus at the gathering. Beijing claims almost the entire South China Sea, ignoring rival claims of the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei, and an international ruling that its assertion has no legal basis. China and the Philippines – which has a defence treaty with the US – have engaged in years of confrontations in the waters. Chinese and Japanese patrol vessels in the East China Sea also routinely face off around disputed islands. The tensions have driven the Philippines and Japan to deepen ties with the US. In January, Rubio said the US under Trump remained committed to the Philippines's defence. Last month, the Philippines, US and Japan held joint coast guard exercises for the second time as a show of unity against Chinese activity in hotly contested waters. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
