Grass Valley partners with SBA for technology upgrade at Makkah facility
Grass Valley has announced a partnership with the Saudi Broadcasting Authority (SBA) to deliver a major broadcast technology upgrade at SBA's key facility in the holy city of Makkah (Mecca). The project, executed in collaboration with local systems integrator First Gulf Company (FGC), represents a substantial enhancement of SBA's live production capabilities, particularly for continuous online coverage from the Grand Mosque (Al-Masjid Al-Haram).
SBA, the official state broadcaster of Saudi Arabia, is responsible for delivering high-quality news, cultural and entertainment programming to audiences both within the Kingdom and internationally. Its Makkah facility serves as a central hub for religious broadcasts, especially during key events such as Ramadan and Hajj. The latest upgrade is part of a broader, long-term initiative to modernise SBA's infrastructure across television, radio and digital platforms with advanced, scalable solutions.
Grass Valley's equipment was selected for the project after detailed technical planning and assessments. Delivered in December, the systems are currently being installed by FGC. 'SBA chose Grass Valley for its proven broadcast technology, reliability, and seamless integration,' explained Joe Chbat, Executive Vice President at FGC. 'The solution ensures high-quality video switching, scalable infrastructure, and efficient signal processing, which are critical for SBA's current and future broadcasting needs. Grass Valley's strong track record in the region, alongside its renowned long-term support and competitive pricing, made it the ideal technical partner for a project of such importance.'
At the heart of the upgrade is a 12G technology platform, which dramatically increases capacity, boosts performance and positions the facility for future high-definition and 4K production demands. The system includes Grass Valley's flagship Kayenne K-Frame XP 3ME switcher paired with the XP ELITE Performance Suite and 12G license, along with a compact K-Frame XP system for secondary operations. Also featured are the Sirius 850 dual-frame router, Kaleido multiviewers within Densité modular frames, advanced audio and video processing units via the Densité glue platform, the XIP-3911 SDI/IP processing solution and the Masterpiece 12G-SDI Master Control Switcher.
Hany Bartella, VP of Sales for MEA at Grass Valley, added: 'This project has been years in the making, and we're proud to be a collaborative, enabling partner of SBA's growth journey. The deployment of the Kayenne switcher, Sirius 850 Router, and Densité processing at the Makkah facility enhances live production capabilities for a location of immense global significance. These state-of-the-art solutions from Grass Valley will modernise SBA's infrastructure and enable it to fully realise its commitment to delivering world-class religious and cultural programming both now and into the future.'
The company will showcase its full portfolio at CABSAT 2025, taking place at Dubai World Trade Centre from May 13–15, where visitors can explore how the GV Media Universe is shaping the future of live broadcasting.

AppsFlyer Reports Decline in UA Spend Despite Mobile Growth
Home » Smart Sectors » Retail » AppsFlyer Reports Decline in UA Spend Despite Mobile Growth AppsFlyer has revealed the UAE findings of its annual State of eCommerce Mobile Marketing report. The data highlights how Chinese eCommerce apps continue to dominate user acquisition (UA) spending in one of the world's top mobile-first economies. In the first half of 2025, Chinese apps accounted for 73% of all UA spend in the UAE. France followed with 13%, and India with 8%, driven by focused campaigns and expat-centric strategies. The report pointed to growing competition from overseas brands. As a result, local eCommerce retailers saw their UA investments shrink. This trend reflects budget reallocations, rising pressure from international players, and market consolidation. AppsFlyer experts noted that local brands still have growth opportunities. However, success will require clear strategies and performance-driven, localised campaigns. Sue Azari, Industry Lead eCommerce at AppsFlyer, explained that Chinese apps have long targeted markets outside China. She said the UAE is a natural fit due to its premium audience and digital maturity. French apps are focusing on iOS users, while Indian advertisers likely see strong potential in the UAE's South Asian expat population. AppsFlyer also reported strong growth for iOS in the UAE. While Android app installs are projected to grow 713% since 2017, iOS installs are expected to rise by 1383% over the same period. Year-on-year, iOS installs are forecast to more than double in 2025. At the same time, iOS fraud rates dropped 63% year-on-year in H1 2025. Android's fraud rate, however, rose 234% in the same period. This indicates iOS is becoming a safer and more attractive platform for marketers, despite Android's scale. The report also revealed a decline in overall UA spending. In H1 2025, Android UA spend fell 21% compared to the same period in 2024. iOS spend declined only 6%, showing more resilience. Yet, the period also saw record-high remarketing investments. Q1 2025 remarketing spend tripled compared to Q1 2024 Ramadan and retail events played a major role in early-year performance Azari encouraged marketers to align campaigns with seasonal peaks like Ramadan and build remarketing strategies to sustain engagement afterward. She also noted that declining Android UA spend may offer cost-effective inventory for savvy brands. AppsFlyer concluded that the UAE remains a competitive market for mobile commerce. Advertisers who balance premium iOS strategies with cost-effective Android engagement and adapt budgets to seasonal trends are best positioned for success.

Saudi Railways transports 8mln passengers, 15mln tons of freight in H1 2025 performance
Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) announced record operational results for the first half of 2025, transporting 7.93 million passengers across over 21,000 trips on its North, East, and Haramain High-Speed train networks — an 8% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The strong performance was bolstered by exceptional service during the Hajj season, which saw 1.2 million pilgrims transported via the Haramain line and 1.8 million via the Mashair Metro, totaling over 2,100 Hajj-related train journeys. On the freight side, SAR moved 14.93 million tons of minerals and goods — up 13% year-on-year — helping remove over 700,000 truck trips from the Kingdom's roads. This shift resulted in fuel savings exceeding 72 million liters and a reduction of 190,000 tons in carbon emissions, supporting Saudi Arabia's environmental sustainability goals and logistics efficiency targets. SAR CEO Dr. Bashar Al-Malik said the figures reflect the company's commitment to providing sustainable, efficient transport solutions in alignment with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy. Beyond operations, SAR continues to deliver long-term economic and environmental impact. Its local content initiative, part of the 'Asasat' program, is on track to surpass 60% by the end of the year, supporting national industries and creating quality job opportunities for Saudi talent. Al-Malik also emphasized SAR's vital role in advancing the Saudi Green Initiative by reducing emissions, lowering reliance on conventional trucking, and offering cleaner alternatives that enhance quality of life in cities across the Kingdom.

Sharjah clears 167 titles under publishing, translation support programmes in 2025
The Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) has announced the approval of 167 new titles under its specialised publishing and translation support programmes in 2025. The approved titles were selected from a total of 2,478 submissions received within four months since registration was open. These include 99 titles under the Translation Grant, 20 through the Sharjah Publishing Sustainability Fund (Onshur), and 48 titles directly supported by the SBA. The step demonstrates Sharjah's continued commitment to fostering translation, publishing, and knowledge exchange between Arabic and other global languages. These selected titles further SBA's achievements, raising the total number of approved titles to 2,405 across various fields and languages since the initiative's launch in 2011. These initiatives represent a cornerstone of SBA's strategy to support publishers, translators, and authors worldwide, creating an enabling environment for intellectual creativity and accelerating bilateral translation between Arabic and other languages. This contributes to expanding the presence of Arabic literature in global markets, while offering readers access to diverse human and intellectual experiences in multiple languages. Ahmed Bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of the SBA, said, "In Sharjah, under the leadership of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, we believe that translation is a vital communication tool for connecting people and fostering understanding and being open to other cultures. "This belief drives us to continue growing our support for exceptional cultural and intellectual content through specialised programmes. At the forefront of these is our Translation Grant, which is given to titles worthy of global readership, in order to promote Arabic creativity to the world, while making international achievements accessible to Arab readers in their native language." Al Ameri added that under the directives of Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority, the authority is committed to expanding its support programmes through initiatives that celebrate the most significant literary and intellectual works from around the world. Mansour Al Hassani, Director of Publishing Services at SBA, commented, "The number of submitted applications this year is a clear indicator of the growing trust that global publishers place in our programmes. It reflects their recognition of the tangible value we bring to the translation and publishing sectors, not only in the UAE and the Arab world but globally." The SBA launched its Translation Grant in 2011 to support publishers worldwide in translating distinguished books into multiple languages. The grant offers up to $4,000 for general books and $1,500 for children's books, with special grants of up to $250,000 for translations from or into Arabic. The criteria include a formal translation contract, details of the translator, and copies of the final published edition. Eligible works include novels, biographies, cookbooks, poetry, and children's literature, given that they are under copyright protection. The Sharjah Publishing Sustainability Fund (Onshur) aims to strengthen the publishing industry in the UAE by offering comprehensive support tailored to publishers' needs. The fund supports publishers' sustainability and growth, and boosts their journey into enriching the cultural landscape in the UAE through three core tracks, namely: Launch, Scale, and Disrupt. WAM
