Ennis Rakestraw injury update: Detroit Lions get good news on second-year CB

Yahoo4 days ago
An injury that forced Ennis Rakestraw Jr. to leave midway through the Detroit Lions' first training camp practice isn't expected to keep him out long term.
'Yeah,' head coach Dan Campbell said Monday, July 21, 'he should be OK. Everything came back negative.'
Campbell said the second-year cornerback will be out 'a few days' and remains 'sore' after he appeared to hurt his upper body Sunday. Rakestraw's arm hung limply following a repetition during a team drill, and he appeared to be in pain as he clutched his shoulder soon after retreating to the sideline. The team later told reporters Rakestraw's chest was being evaluated.
'Structurally everything looks pretty good,' Campbell said of the test results.
That is cause for relief in these parts.
SHAWN WINDSOR: Lions know exactly what this season means: 'The year of the reckoning'
Rakestraw's fledgling pro career, after all, has already been significantly impacted by injuries.
After being selected No. 61 overall in 2024, he was limited during the ramp-up period to his rookie campaign as he continued to recover from a sports hernia suffered during his college days at Missouri.
Then, in pregame warmups before the Lions' Week 2 loss to Tampa Bay last September, he pulled his hamstring.
Although Rakestraw returned to the field, the strain lingered, and he only played 43 more snaps the remainder of the season before he was placed on injured reserve in late November.
This spring, after he returned to full health, the Lions expressed optimism Rakestraw could carve out a role as one of the top reserve players in the secondary. In workouts, he practiced exclusively outside after playing almost 50% of his snaps in the slot last year.
'We're really excited and looking forward to what he's going to be able to bring this year,' general manager Brad Holmes said in April.
They'll just have to wait a little bit longer before seeing whether Rakestraw can meet their expectations.

'Real quality' - coach hails Embleton's pre-season efforts for Blues

Elliot Embleton is showing plenty of his quality as he aims to make a positive fresh start for Carlisle United in 2025/26. That is the view of coach Gavin Skelton, who says the former Sunderland and Blackpool man's attributes have been clear this summer. Embleton, 26, has put himself firmly in the frame for a starting role in the Blues' opening game of the National League season at Woking on Saturday. The January signing scored his first goal for the club, from the penalty spot in the 2-0 win at Chester. That came at the end of a pre-season where Embleton has featured regularly for Mark Hughes' side in an attacking midfield role. First-team coach Skelton agreed that Embleton's ability was clear. 'Amongst a number, he's shown real quality,' said Skelton. 'Top players have that. It's not just on the ball, it's their understanding of the game.' Carlisle United announce sell-out for National League opener at Woking Signs of Embleton's prominence in pre-season are clear with the midfielder having played the fourth most minutes in United's friendlies in the full squad. Carlisle hope he can play an influential role in their bid to make a positive start to the new fifth-tier season. Embleton endured a difficult start to his Carlisle career after joining in Blackpool in last winter's transfer window, with the player coming in for stick from some fans as United crashed to relegation. Yet now he appears a strong contender to be in Hughes' opening-day XI at the Kingfield Stadium, in the number ten position behind an attack that looks set to include impressive summer signing Regan Linney. Girona sets the future for two young African talents

Girona sets the future for two young African talents Girona FC continues to put its faith in its rising African stars. The Catalan club has made a decision on the futures of Lass Kourouma and Dawda Camara, two players who have made their mark with the reserve team. Lass Kourouma, a 21-year-old Guinean midfielder, was one of the main architects behind Girona B's promotion to the Segunda Federación. Vision, tempo control, and versatility make him a well-rounded prospect. Several LaLiga Hypermotion clubs have shown interest, but Girona has shut the door on any departure. The club is counting on him to play a role between the reserves and the first team this season. For his part, Dawda Camara Sankharé, a 22-year-old Mauritanian striker, is also attracting plenty of interest. After a standout season in the regional championship, he impressed with his physical strength, aerial ability, and his skill at playing with his back to goal. He took part in preseason with the first team. Girona is open to a loan move to help him rack up professional minutes.

Report – Atalanta Trying To Offload Inter Milan Target To Three Other Clubs

Atalanta will reportedly try to sell Ademola Lookman to any club other than Inter Milan amid stalled negotiations. According to Tuttosport via FCInterNews, La Dea have grown frustrated with Inter's reluctance to meet their demands. Talks between Atalanta and Inter over the Nigerian forward's transfer to San Siro have been ongoing for weeks. However, the Bergamo outfit's €50 million asking price remains a stumbling block. Indeed, Inter have made it clear that they will not offer more than €45 million. As such, talks have reached an impasse. However, after signing Noa Lang, Kevin De Bruyne, and Lorenzo Lucca, their incoming market has hit the pause button. Meanwhile, La Liga giants Atletico Madrid have also emerged as potential suitors for the 27-year-old. Inter remain the front-runners, but Atalanta would preferably sell their prized asset to someone else.
