Pope Leo XIV Blesses Commanders Rival Ahead Of 2025 Season

Pope Leo XIV Blesses Commanders Rival Ahead Of 2025 Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Last year in the playoffs, the Detroit Lions needed all the help they could get against the upstart Washington Commanders, who buzz-sawed coach Dan Campbell's favored team in a 45-31 shellacking. Advertisement The Lions are coming back into 2025 with some extra juice, though, as they figure to once again join Washington as a Super Bowl contender. The Lions have The Vatican on their side. Pope Leo XIV - seriously - has blessed an NFL player ahead of the 2025 regular season. And really ... playfully ... Washington fans shouldn't be as upset about this as Chicago Bears fans surely are. The first-ever American pope just happens to be from Chicago ... and has long been well-known for his fandom of the Bears and the White Sox and all things Windy City. As it happens, Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta and his new bride, Callahan Dellinger LaPorta, scheduled a vacation in Rome ... Advertisement And yes, they got blessed by the Pope, as the young NFL tight end demonstrated for all to see as took to Instagram to show off the photo on Wednesday. "Thank you to a very busy man for blessing me and my bride. A special moment we'll never forget,'' he wrote. Bears fans can be mock-unhappy about this ... but Chicago has spent a great deal of time in the NFC North basement and doesn't figure to be a match for the powerful Lions anyway. And the Commanders? As they and the Lions prepare to give chase to upsetting defending champion Philadelphia toward a Super Bowl run, they'll take any "blessing'' they can get. Lions WR Jameson Williams emerged as one of NFL's top YAC threats in 2024

Jameson Williams took a big jump for the Detroit Lions in his third season. The speedy wideout topped 1,000 receiving yards for the first time in part because of his ability to run after the catch, something the Lions utilized much more than they had in Jamo's earlier years. Williams ranked fourth in YAC among receivers with at least 50 receptions in the 2024 season, according to NFL Next Gen Stats. Plays like this one against Seattle certainly helped. Incorporating Williams into more crossing routes and layered concepts plays into his world-class speed and ability to leave defenders chasing at his increasingly distant heels. That change in Jamo's role is reflected in his average depth of target, or ADOT. In his first two seasons, Williams' ADOT was 16.0. In 2024, that dropped to 11.2. Williams becoming a more versatile receiver, adapting from being a straight vertical threat into someone the Lions could trust to handle more intricate route concepts, helped him explode into a much more useful and dangerous option. While the departure of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Chicago Bears has some worried about the offense, Williams might actually take another step up under new coordinator John Morton. In Denver, where Morton (and passing game coordinator David Shaw) coached in 2024, the Broncos were masters of using Sean Payton's offensive scheme, deploying speed horizontally as well as vertically. Players like Marvin Mims and Troy Franklin thrived after the catch by getting room to run on crossers, drags and keen spacing between receivers. That's precisely where Williams took his big step forward in 2024 and is poised to progress even more in 2025.

Aidan Hutchinson propels the Lions' lofty defensive line ranking from PFF ahead of 2025

The Lions ranking is probably higher than fans might expect... The Detroit Lions are not known at this point for their stellar defensive line play, but Pro Football Focus still holds the unit in high regard. PFF released its 2025 NFL Defensive Line Rankings on Wednesday, putting the Pittsburgh Steelers at the top spot with T.J. Watt and Cameron Heyward leading the way. The defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles came in at No. 2 despite the departures of Josh Sweat and Milton Williams. The Lions, despite a 2024 season marred by injuries and a lack of pass rush impact, are ranked at No. 6 by PFF entering 2025. The experts putting together this list even acknowledged they could've landed even higher than that. "The Detroit Lions' defensive line may deserve a higher ranking based on on-paper talent, but there are quite a few question marks surrounding the health of its top players," wrote PFF NFL contributor Zoltán Buday. PFF pointed out the Defensive Player of the Year campaign Aidan Hutchinson led at the beginning of 2024, leading all edge defenders with a 94.9 overall grade. Hutchinson has been fully cleared for all activities ahead of the start of training camp. The pending return of Alim McNeill also had an impact on this ranking. McNeill tore his ACL late last season but ranked ninth among interior defenders in his PFF overall grade (79.6) before going down. His return will have a significant effect on the performance of the defense as a whole this season, but it may be a while before the Lions see him on the field. PFF ranked the Lions a spot behind the Buffalo Bills and a spot ahead of the Cleveland Browns. Remaining NFC North teams fell far outside the top 10 with the Minnesota Vikings at No. 16, Chicago Bears at No. 18, and Green Bay Packers at No. 24.
