Wimbledon 2025: Indian-American Ronit Karki works his way up to the ‘final' rung

Indian-American Ronit Karki may not have cleared the final hurdle in the Wimbledon junior boys event on Sunday, but the 17-year-old has done enough these last two weeks working his way through the qualifying draw and making the title round -to show that he's a talent to watch out for.
Karki went down 2-6, 3-6 to world No.6 Ivan Ivanov, the 16year-old from of Bulgaria, in the boy's final. Earlier in his run to the final, Karki, ranked 52, took down No.9 Yannik Alexandrescou of Romania, No. 8 Jack Kennedy of the United States, No.14 Alan Wazny of Poland, and No. 12 Alexander Vasilev of Bulgaria. Karki played the J300 at Roehampton two weeks ago, making the third round, when competing for the first time on grass.

The New Jersey-born teen, who trains in Florida, was just one out of the main draw, but said he wouldn't change a thing about playing the qualifiers. 'Everything is connected, so maybe playing the qualifying draw was a good thing, and maybe the reason why I'm here right now,' he said.
Karki, whose family home is in East Brunswick, New Jersey, took to tennis because his father Trilok started playing the sport when he lived in New York with his wife Kanchan. 'My sister (Naomi) started playing tennis too, then I just picked it up because my sister and my dad played it,' Karki said, 'My dad is the reason I play tennis.'

Starting the day at 58 for four and needing another 135 runs on a rapidly deteriorating surface with variable bounce, India needed their experienced batters to fire for their fourth success at the iconic ground since 1932 but it was not to be. The loss of Rishabh Pant (9 off 12 balls), K L Rahul (39 off 58) and Washington Sundar (0 off 4) inside the first hour made chasing 193 an improbable task for India. The key for India was the presence of Rahul and Pant in the middle but both departed in a space of 18 balls. They needed to see out Archer's spell but the tearaway pacer struck twice in a fiery spell to put England on top. Pant, who injured his left index finger while keeping on day one, clearly looked in discomfort facing the extreme pace of Archer, wincing his hand in pain every time the ball hurried on to his bat. Pant tried his best to make a difference, collecting a couple of fours via a flick and a one-handed drive off the Barbados-born bowler. Archer, making a Test comeback after more than four years, flaunted his X-factor once again as he produced a beauty to send back a half-fit Pant back into the dressing room. The ball straightened just enough from the angle to shatter Pant's off-stump. Considering the occasion and the high intensity of players from both teams, it was not a surprise to see Archer having a quick word to Pant as the wicket-keeper started his long walk back to the players' balcony via the legendary Long Room. Rahul, at the other end, needed to hold the innings together but when he departed three overs after Pant's dismissal, the writing was on the wall. England captain Ben Stokes bowled his heart out from the Nursery End and got the all important wicket of the in-form Rahul with a ball that seamed back profusely to trap him lbw. The on-field umpire thought the ball was not hitting the stumps but Stokes got the decision overturned, drawing a loud roar from the crowd, through the DRS.

R Ashwin's 'Not Ready' Take On Jofra Archer Backfires As England Pacer Rattles India In 3rd Test
England pacer Jofra Archer left all the Indian fans utterly stunned with the marvelous dismissal of Rishabh Pant on Day 5 of the third Test at Lord's, London. India were chasing a target of 193 and were reduced to 58/4 at Stumps on Day 4. India lost opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (0), Karun Nair (14) and skipper Shubman Gill (6) cheaply to trail by 135 runs heading into the final day. On Day 5, KL Rahul (33*) was joined by Pant but Archer provided England with the wicket of the latter in the early hours of the first session. On the fifth delivery of the 21st over, Archer cleaned up Pant in style as his brilliantly delivery went on to rattle up the off stump. Pant's dismissal brought a big blow to India's hopes of winning the third Test. Interestingly, ahead of the play on Day 5, former India all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin had given his opinion on Archer, which has now proven to be wrong. On his YouTube channel, Ashwin had stated that Archer is not "not prepared for a Test match". "I am very sorry to say that Jofra Archer, he is not prepared for a Test match. He bowled a good first spell in the first innings, but England do need Jofra Archer to turn up on Day 5," Ashwin said in a video on his YouTube channel. "At 58/4, there are only two England bowlers that are bowling really well. They are Ben Stokes and, luckily, Brydon Carse has found the right length. Otherwise, this England bowling attack is looking absolutely pedestrian," he added. Ashwin further picked England as the favourites to win the third Test and take 2-1 lead in the five-match series. "England are favorites to win this Test match, at this point in time. It is a big prediction.
