Bangladesh school jet crash death toll rises to 27

Dhaka, Jul 22 (PTI) The death toll from the crash of the Bangladesh Air Force training fighter jet into a school building in Dhaka rose to 27 as more people succumbed to their injuries, authorities said on Tuesday.
The F-7 BGI aircraft, a training fighter jet manufactured in China, experienced a 'mechanical fault" moments after takeoff and crashed into the two-storey building of Milestone School and College at Diabari in Dhaka's Uttara area on Monday.
'The toll is now 27, and 25 of them are children," Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus's special adviser, Saidur Rahman, told reporters.
About 170 were injured, with several of them said to be critical.
Wails of despair and pain reverberate at hospitals where patients were treated with burn injuries.
Twenty deaths were reported initially, and seven died of their injuries overnight. The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Mohammad Towkir Islam, was among those killed in the crash.
The government has declared a state day of mourning for Tuesday in memory of those affected by the crash.
A statement from the Chief Advisor's Office on Monday announced that the national flag will be flown at half-mast at all government, semi-government, autonomous institutions and educational institutions across the country.
Special prayers will be organised at all places of religious worship in the country for the injured and the dead.
A high-level investigation committee has been formed by the Bangladesh Air Force to determine the cause of the accident. PTI AR NSA NSA

Last Updated: Uttarkashi, Aug 5 (PTI) The ancient Kalp Kedar temple here was buried in the debris brought over by the flash flood in the Kheer Ganga river on Tuesday. The temple remained buried under ground for many years, possibly due to a previous disaster, with only its tip visible over ground. Built in the Kature style, the architecture of the Shiva temple is similar to that of Kedarnath Dham. An excavation led to its discovery in 1945. After digging several feet underground, an ancient Shiva temple was found whose structure was similar to Kedarnath temple. The temple was below the ground level and devotees had to go down to offer prayers in the temple. People say that some water from the Kheer Ganga would often drift onto the 'shivling' installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple and a path had been created for it. There are stone carvings outside the temple. The 'shivling' of the sanctum sanctorum is shaped like the back of Nandi, just like in Kedarnath temple. More than 5,000 students take part in letter writing competition
Kolkata, Aug 5 (PTI) More than 5,000 West Bengal students participated in the letter-writing competition organised by the Philatelic Congress of India, Rotary International and Department of Posts, an official statement said on Tuesday. The students from 63 schools participated in the 'Binamrata', letter-writing competition held recently. The students of class 9 and 10 were asked to write a letter to their parents or teachers expressing their gratitude for mentoring and guiding them in life, the Depart of Posts statement said. Metro stations from DumDum-Kavi Subhas undergo security audit by RITES
Kolkata, Aug 5 (PTI) A security audit of DumDum-Kavi Subhas stretch of the Kolkata Metro Railway Blue Line covering 22 stations, including underground ones, have been conducted by RITES, a senior official said on Tuesday. On July 28, the Kavi Subhas metro station of the blue line was shut down after cracks appeared on the structure. It was then announced that the up platform of the 15-year-old metro station at New Garia in the southern fringes of the city will be razed and rebuilt, leading to closure of the station and termination of up and down train services at Sahid Khudiram. The audit – factoring the structural conditions of stations built along both the elevated and underground parts of India's first metro and the condition of tunnels – has been submitted to the Ministry of Railways for evaluation and necessary follow-up action, the official told PTI. However, nothing has been found to press the panic button immediately, and the stations and tunnels were found to be structurally safe and sound. The report focused on the structural conditions of the 17 underground stations between Dumdum and Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, which is about 16.45 km long and the condition of the tunnel, as well as the pillars built on the Adi Ganga canal between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar-Kavi Subhas elevated stretch and the foundation of six stations along that stretch, the official said. 'The RITES had undertaken a survey and submitted the report early this year as part of the continuous maintenance drill," he said. 'The pillars have been found to be structurally safe and sound, but in case there is a need for any modification or adjustment for public safety, that decision will be taken by the Railway Board," he said. The Dumdum-Tollygunge underground part became functional in 1995, while the stations along the elevated tracks between Netaji and Kavi Subhas were opened between 2009-2010. With instances of water seepage and flooding of tracks in parts of the underground section of the blue line following heavy downpour in recent times, monitoring the condition of tunnels has assumed more importance, but Metro is maintaining every caution to assess the structural aspect of its stations, the official added. However, before cracks were spotted in its four pillars, the authorities had chalked out plans for partial razing down and restoration of Kavi Subhas station after the Durga Puja, as RITES had flagged some issues over its foundation. 'All stations on the Sahid Khudiram-Dakshineswar section have been found to be in overall good condition," he said. The 32-km Blue Line is at present operational between Shahid Khudiram station and Dakshineswar station.
