China cruises past Argentina for first win in women's water polo at World Championships
Led by Olympic champion and new head coach Miki Oca of Spain, China took command early and never looked back.
The team raced out to a 15-5 halftime lead and maintained its offensive onslaught in the second half to seal the convincing win. Nong Sanfeng, the player of the match, was one of three Chinese players to score four goals.
Shao Yixin and Zhou Shang also netted four each. Three additional players scored hat tricks, and all 12 of China's field players contributed at least one goal.
"This win is very important for us, especially considering we've only had seven weeks to prepare," said Oca, who guided Spain to Olympic gold in Paris last year before taking over the Chinese squad in April.
"We attacked very well and scored a lot of goals. The players were excellent in transition and finished their chances. We found the goal easily today," he added.
China, which dropped its opener to the United States on Friday, will face the Netherlands on Tuesday.
"You have to keep fighting, keep going. You can't let one win or one loss affect your emotions," Oca said. "Holland is one of the top teams in the world. It will be a great challenge and a good test of our progress at these championships."

Half-And-Half? Unique Medals For 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics Revealed
Last Updated: The Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics medals were unveiled in Venice, attended by Federica Pellegrini and Francesca Porcellato. They symbolize athletes' journeys. Organisers of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics have officially revealed the medal designs for the upcoming Games, scheduled to take place next year. The unveiling took place on Tuesday during a ceremony in Venice, attended by celebrated Italian sports icons Federica Pellegrini, an Olympic swimming champion, and Francesca Porcellato, a multi-sport Paralympic gold medallist. The medals feature a unique design that combines two halves that symbolise the culmination of the athlete's journey and all those who have walked beside them along the way. Each medal features the iconic Olympic five rings on one side, while the reverse is engraved with details of the event and the venue—a design mirrored for the Paralympic medals, which instead carry the Paralympic agitos symbol. 'Each medal, whether Olympic or Paralympic, is a story etched into metal: it speaks of effort, determination, sacrifice, and the hopes of those who have lived to reach the podium," said Giovanni Malagò, President of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Foundation. The medals were produced by the Italian State Mint (IPZS), which operates under the Ministry of Economy. Each piece symbolizes both national craftsmanship and the emotional journey of elite sport. A total of 245 gold, 245 silver, and 245 bronze medals will be awarded during the Winter Olympic Games. The Paralympic Games will see 137 medals presented in each of the three categories. The unveiling of the Milano Cortina 2026 medals follows February's reveal of the mascots and April's reveal of the torches for the upcoming Winter Olympic and Paralympic torch relays. The Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 take place next year from 6-22 February, with the Paralympic Winter Games following from 6-16 March. view comments First Published: July 15, 2025, 23:31 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. FIFA World Cup 26 ticketing programme launches this September
Zurich (Switzerland), July 15 (UNI) FIFA today announced that the application period for the first ticket draw for the FIFA World Cup 26 will open on September 10. 'Following the incredible success of the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, excitement is reaching new heights for the FIFA World Cup 26,' said FIFA President Gianni Infantino. 'We're looking forward to welcoming the world back to North America, as Canada, Mexico and the United States host what will be the biggest and greatest sporting event ever. We encourage fans everywhere to get ready to secure their place – these will be the most coveted seats in world sport,' he said. The 2026 game-changing tournament kicks off on June 11, 2026, in Mexico City, with the final taking place on July 19, 2026, in New York New Jersey – which successfully hosted the FIFA Club World Cup final last Sunday. FIFA's new flagship club competition united 32 of the world's best club sides and attracted close to 2.5 million fans to 11 cities across the United States, setting the stage for what's to come in 2026. With 6.5 million fans expected to attend, the 2026 edition of the FIFA World Cup will be the biggest FIFA World Cup yet, consisting of 48 teams and 104 matches across the three host countries. Due to anticipated high demand, FIFA World Cup tickets are released in phases. Fans should visit to register their interest, if they have not done so already. When registering, fans who do not have a FIFA ID will need to create one. This registration of interest ensures they are made aware of ticketing dates, next steps and processes. On September 10, fans will then be able to use their FIFA ID to apply for their first chance to buy tickets, according to a FIFA media statement. There will be several distinct ticket sales phases from the start of sales on September 10, through to the final match on July 19. Each phase may differ in purchasing processes, payment methods and ticket products, and full details on each phase will be released in the coming months. The Final Draw for the FIFA World Cup 26 is set to take place in December, with teams assigned to specific match schedule fixtures, including venues and kick-off times, shortly thereafter. UNI BM
