Lando Norris sets pace in practice for British Grand Prix as he eyes home win
Norris trails McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri by 15 points in the championship standings following his victory in Austria last weekend and is bidding to secure back-to-back Formula One wins for the first time.
The 25-year-old has his own grandstand at Silverstone, hosting 10,000 of his fans, and he delighted those supporters by setting a searing pace to end the day 0.222 seconds clear of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.
Crucially for Norris, who admitted on Thursday that he would swap his other race wins for success at Silverstone, he was over four tenths clear of Australian Piastri in fourth.
Lewis Hamilton raised hopes of more Silverstone success by enjoying a positive day in his Ferrari.
The seven-time world champion has a remarkable record at his home race, winning a record nine times at Silverstone including victory in the rain last year – with wet weather again forecast to affect the action across the weekend.
The 40-year-old has also finished in the top three in all of his last 11 appearances here but is yet to stand on the podium in Ferrari colours.

The Scuderia delivered an improved performance in Austria, with Leclerc third ahead of Hamilton in fourth.
Hamilton, whose streak of 11 races without a podium finish is the longest of his career, showed signs of ending his podium drought at his home race as he topped the charts in first practice before finishing the day third after the second running.
Max Verstappen endured another difficult day for Red Bull, complaining of handling issues and saying that his tyres would not respond in the high-speed corners.
The four-time world champion, who is 61 points adrift of Piastri in the title standings following his first-lap elimination in Austria, ended the day fifth fastest.

Mercedes pair Kimi Antonelli and George Russell were sixth and eighth respectively.
Briton Arvid Lindblad drove for Red Bull during first practice – becoming only the second driver under 18 to take part in a Grand Prix weekend, after Verstappen.
The 17-year-old delivered a respectable lap time to finish 13th.

English amateur Lottie Woad poised for victory at Irish Open
LOTTIE WOAD IS in pole position for victory at the Irish Open after the English amateur took a seven-shot lead into the final round at Carton House tomorrow. Woad's second 67 of the weekend put her on 17-under par. Madelene Sagstrom of Sweden is in second spot on 10-under, while Australian Kirsten Rudgeley is one back in third. Maguire wasn't able to sustain that momentum, however, and while she birdied 14 that was in between bogeys on the 12th and 15th. For the other Irish in action, Emma Fleming is on level par and Canice Screene on five-over.

Max Verstappen puts Red Bull on pole for British Grand Prix at Silverstone
Red Bull's Max Verstappen timed his final lap perfectly to seize pole position for Sunday's British Grand Prix with McLaren's Oscar Piastri alongside him on the front row. Piastri's team-mate Lando Norris qualified third for his home race. Mercedes' George Russell took fourth, while Lewis Hamilton, last year's race winner for a record ninth time, will start fifth in his first home grand prix since making the switch to Ferrari. His team-mate Charles Leclerc lines up sixth, with the top five split by barely two tenths of a second on an overcast and windy afternoon. READ MORE 'It was tricky out there with the wind ... it was all shifting around a bit,' said Verstappen after his fourth pole in 12 races but first since Miami in May. 'These cars are extremely sensitive to it. 'That final lap was good enough. This is a proper track, in qualifying you have to go flat out. With these corners you have to be really committed and that's really enjoyable.' Verstappen is third overall in the driver championship standings, 61 points behind leader Piastri, who sits 15 points ahead of Norris. Verstappen is chasing his third win of the season to make up for his retirement in Austria last weekend. The Dutch man was also quickest in the first phase of qualifying, ahead of Piastri, but Hamilton went top in the second and looked like he could end a wait for pole dating back to Hungary 2023. It was not to be, however, with Piastri taking provisional pole after the first flying laps before Verstappen put in a best of one minute 24.892 seconds, 0.103 quicker. Norris was 0.015 slower than Piastri. 'The first lap was mega, to be honest,' said the Australian. 'I was trying to think how I could go quicker and I didn't. The last lap was a little bit messy but it's been tight all weekend.' Norris said it had been an afternoon of small margins. 'I think it's going to be fun tomorrow. I think it's going to be a good battle between the three of us, or probably more with Lewis, Charles and George,' he added. Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli qualified seventh but has a three-place grid penalty carried over from Austria where he shunted Verstappen out on the opening lap. That should have raised Oliver Bearman's Haas up to seventh but the British driver has a 10-place penalty for failing to adhere to red flags waved in final practice. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso will start seventh with Alpine's Pierre Gasly moving up to eighth and Carlos Sainz ninth for Williams with Antonelli 10th. Franco Colapinto triggered red flags in the opening stage of qualifying after he careered off track and into the gravel. Both the Saubers, Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson and Aston Martin's Lance Stroll also failed to progress to P2.
