Ulsan ready to chase knockout spot at expanded FIFA Club World Cup

Korea Herald01-04-2025
As the lone South Korean club at this year's FIFA Club World Cup, Ulsan HD FC will try to make a push for a knockout berth, their head coach said Thursday.
Kim Pan-gon and his captain Kim Young-gwon attended the South Korean stop of the Club World Cup Trophy Tour in Seongnam, just south of Seoul.
The 2025 Club World Cup, the first edition with an expanded format featuring 32 teams, will be played across the United States from June 14 to July 13. FIFA launched the trophy tour in January in New York City, and the tour will have stops in 29 cities in 20 nations over 140 days.
Ulsan, three-time defending K League 1 champions, will be one of four clubs from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the lone South Korean side. They secured their spot by finishing second in the AFC club ranking points.
In the group stage, they will face Mamelodi Sundowns FC of South Africa on June 17 in Orlando, Florida; Fluminense FC of Brazil on June 21 in East Rutherford, New Jersey; and Borussia Dortmund of Germany on June 25 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The top two teams from eight groups will qualify for the round of 16. Kim Pan-gon said it will take at least four points -- a win and a draw -- to contend for a knockout ticket.
"We'll try to get to the round of 16. If all goes well, we could even finish with a win and two draws," the coach said at Naver 1784, the headquarters for the South Korean internet portal giant Naver. "Realistically, we'll have to narrow the gap with Dortmund and Fluminense. I think they're going to be really tough. And I am also looking forward to playing Sundowns."
Since the Club World Cup is taking place in the middle of the K League 1 season, but after the end of European seasons, Kim said the schedule could work in Ulsan's favor.
"I think our players will be sharper, and conditioning won't be an issue for us," Kim added. "We will try to capitalize on that advantage as much as possible."
The coach also said it was important for his team to "make our fans feel proud when they watch us play."
"I am trying to think of the ways that help us dominate and control matches against great opponents," Kim added.
Kim Young-gwon, Ulsan's captain and center back, will be competing in his third Club World Cup, having appeared at the 2013 and 2015 tournaments as a member of Guangzhou Evergrande.
"I am excited to play in the new format. And I think we can be competitive in this tournament," he said. "I want to show the world how strong a K League championship team can be. This will be a great opportunity for the entire team to grow."
As for the trophy itself, Kim said, "This is a good-looking trophy. It'd be great to attend the championship press conference. I'll try to get as close to the trophy as possible."
The trophy will travel to Munsu Football Stadium in Ulsan, some 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, for a public viewing on Sunday, before Ulsan HD FC host Jeju SK FC. (Yonhap)

Liverpool and Portugal players join family in mourning Diogo Jota and his brother at funeral

GONDOMAR, Portugal (AP) — Players from Liverpool and Portugal's national team joined family and friends for the funeral of their teammate Diogo Jota and his brother on Saturday, two days after the siblings died in a car crash in Spain. Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk arrived carrying a red floral arrangement in the shape of a soccer shirt with Jota's No. 20 in white. Liverpool teammate Andrew Robertson carried a similar arrangement with the No. 30, the number worn by Jota's brother, André Silva, who played for Portuguese club Penafiel. Coach Arne Slot was part of the Liverpool contingent. Portugal international Rúben Neves served as a pallbearer for Jota a day after playing for at the Club World Cup in the United States. He and Jota were teammates at Wolverhampton earlier in their careers. Neves and João Cancelo attended the funeral after playing in Orlando on Friday, when their Al Hilal was eliminated by Fluminense. Both players had wept when a minute of silence was held before the quarterfinal match. The service was held at Igreja Matriz church in the Portuguese town of Gondomar, where Jota had a home. Church bells pealed at 10 a.m. local time as the funeral started. Pallbearers carried the caskets of both brothers from a chapel next door and into the church. Relatives and hundreds of friends and acquaintances, including players of the local Gondomar FC where Jota started playing at age 9, then followed. Portugal's national team coach Roberto Martínez and several other top Portuguese players also attended, including Manchester City duo Bernardo Silva and Rúben Dias and Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes. "These are really, really sad days, as you can imagine," Martínez said. "But today we showed we are a large, close family. ... Their spirit will be with us forever." The bishop of Porto, Manuel Linda, led the funeral mass. The church was filled to capacity and a couple of dozen people followed the service via loudspeaker from outside. Afterwards, the coffins were carried to the cemetery next to the church. Jota, 28, and the 25-year-old Silva were found dead near Zamora in northwestern Spain early Thursday after the Lamborghini they were driving crashed on an isolated stretch of highway just after midnight and burst into flames. The brothers were reportedly heading to catch a boat from northern Spain to go to England where Jota was to rejoin with Liverpool after a summer break. Spanish police are investigating the cause of the crash, which did not involve another vehicle, they said. They said they believe it could have been caused by a blown tire. Their bodies were repatriated to Portugal after being identified by the family. A wake was held for them on Friday. Jota's death occurred two weeks after he married long-time partner Rute Cardoso while on vacation from a long season where he helped Liverpool win the Premier League. The couple had three children, the youngest born last year.

Kim Ha-seong returns to MLB after 11 months with hit, stolen base

Kim Ha-seong has made an impactful return to the big leagues with a hit and a stolen base in his highly anticipated debut for the Tampa Bay Rays, following a long injury layoff. Starting at shortstop and batting seventh in an away game against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field in Minneapolis on Friday (U.S. time), the 29-year-old infielder went 1-for-3 with a stolen base. It was his first Major League appearance in 11 months, following a right shoulder injury sustained last August while playing for the San Diego Padres. The injury required surgery that October. During his rehabilitation, the South Korean player signed a lucrative two-year deal worth up to US$31 million with the Rays. After a 21-game stint in Triple-A, Kim was called up to the major league roster. His moment came in the top of the seventh inning when, leading off, Kim hit Brock Stewart's 96.3 mph fastball for a sharp single to left field. The ball left his bat at a blistering 105.3 mph. It was not only his first hit in a Tampa Bay uniform but also the 419th of his MLB career. He immediately stole second base but was tagged out attempting to steal third. Kim had to exit the game early after experiencing cramping in his right calf during the attempt. After the game, both Kim and Rays manager Kevin Cash expressed cautious optimism that the issue was not serious. Kim told that he hadn't felt any discomfort until the moment he broke for third base in the seventh inning. "I think we'll need to reevaluate tomorrow, but I don't think it should be a big problem," Kim said via an interpreter after the game. "I hope so," Cash said. "We'll just see. It's kind of day to day -- check on him through the night and then tomorrow." Despite Kim's encouraging debut, the Rays ultimately fell to the Twins by a score of 4-3 on a walk-off home run. The Tampa Bay Rays currently hold a solid 48-40 record, tying them for second place in the American League East. They also remain in a favorable position in the highly competitive AL wild card race.
