Country diary: A blossom-laden spring to make up for last year
Before going upcountry, I walked on my mended hip in James Evans and Mary Martin's documented and tended orchard of historic fruit trees (200 apples, 30 cherries and 10 pears). This year's succession of prolific blossom is particularly beautiful, helped by a sunny March, and in such contrast to last year's wet and unproductive spring.
Apple is the latest to open, heralded by the large pink and white blooms of the pear apple (Snub Nose). But it is the creamy coloured blossom of pears that came first, including Belle de Bruxelles, now more than 40ft high and laden with blossom to the topmost tips. It was grafted from a twig, cut from an overgrown specimen surviving in the old garden of a pub in nearby Launceston. The spreading Morwellham pear was grafted at the same time from a chance seedling, found growing in the wall of a derelict lime kiln on the Devon bank of the Tamar. Hoverflies dart about its blossom and shiny pale leaves, and there should be a good crop of medium-sized golden-red fruit.
The delicate fluffiness of white cherry blossom diminishes among the opening orange-tinged foliage, while avenues of Burcombe, Birchenhayes, Fice, Rumbullion and Smutts form flowering canopies, spread above sturdy trunks. Years of pruning in the winter months has shaped the branches in this maturing orchard to allow occasional mechanical trimming of the flowery sward (sheep were tried at first but they preferred to graze the immature trees). After a three-year dearth of cherries, there is hope for a bumper harvest; perhaps the triple-legged ladders will be erected and another deep freeze needed to store surplus fruit.
Further down the valley, in a steep tributary of the Cotehele millstream, the council's Forest for Cornwall are planting a random mix of young trees. Included are old sorts of apples and cherries that will add diversity and mystery to this expanse of future woodland.

New D-class RNLI lifeboat celebrations for Little and Broad Haven
Little and Broad Haven RNLI's new inshore lifeboat D-899 Swaine-Legane was officially named and handed into the care of the RNLI on Saturday, July 19. In what the station described as 'an amazing day', the important handover was carried out by Jill Legane, one of the trustees of the Laurence Misener Charitable Trust, who kindly funded the lifeboat. Sailors mark end to Trafalgar class submarines in Plymouth
The formal act of decommissioning the last operation Trafalgar class submarine has been marked with an event in Royal Navy said HMS Triumph was the last remaining of seven Trafalgar class attack submarines, otherwise known at T-boats. It said for more than four decades the seven submarines were the "forefront of underwater warfare".Crews of the last two T-boats in service, Talent and Triumph, marked the occasion at HMS Drake in Devonport on Friday, with former Trafalgar class crews invited to join them. There was a colour party and guard comprising of submariners from Talent – which still has crew as part of the complex decommissioning process – and were also veterans from the Royal Naval Associations and Royal British Legion on salute was taken by Captain Dave Burrell, who served in a string of T-boats, was Executive Officer of both Talent and Triumph and, as skipper of HMS Trenchant, took her to the North was joined by Triumph's Sponsor, Lady Hamilton, whose husband was Armed Forces Minister when the boat was launched in February 1991. Captain Burrell said he was mesmerised by the T-boats from the moment he first stepped aboard HMS Tireless in 2003. He said: "The boat was a marvel, the people inspiring, and the mission was challenging." The Trafalgar class vessels began to be phased out in 2009 after the first of the seven successor Astute class submarines arrived. Collectively T-boats served for more than 200 years and Triumph completed the longest career of the seven submarines with 34 Burrell concluded his address with a brief eulogy for the class of submarines: "It is time to rest easy Trafalgar, Turbulent, Tireless, Torbay, Trenchant, Talent and Triumph. "It's now someone else's turn."

Public vote to decide name of proposed town in east Devon
A district council has asked for help in naming a proposed new town in 500-hectare site near Westpoint could help tackle housing demand by creating about 8,000 homes, East Devon District Council council has set up a website allowing people to rank its shortlisted names - Newton Clyst, Marlcombe, Willowcrest and Clysthope - to help inform its final the town before the development had been approved would give the district a "clear identity and shape the look and feel of the area as it grows", it said. The council said the proposed names were related to the area's history, geography and the environment, as well as previous feedback. Councillor Todd Olive said giving people the chance to vote on the town's name was a "unique opportunity to help shape the identity of a new community"."The name we choose will reflect its roots in the local landscape and its aspirations for the future," he said."We're encouraging everyone with a connection to east Devon to have their say and be part of creating a lasting legacy from day one."The deadline for responses is Tuesday 26 August.
