However, later Rishi Ajay Das, the founder of Kinnar Akhada, has expelled both Mamta Kulkarni and Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi from the Akhada.
The decision comes in the wake of the controversial appointment of Mamta Kulkarni, a former Bollywood actress with a checkered past, as Mahamandaleshwar. Tripathi had allegedly appointed Kulkarni without the founder's consent, an act that has sparked considerable outrage.
Speaking to ANI, she said, "...It was all in God's hands for me to become Mahamandaleshwar in that Kumbh, which was such a holy occasion in 140 years. God provided me with the fruits of 25 years of my 'tapasya'. So, that happened."
According to a press release issued on January 30, 2025, Rishi Ajay Das noted, "As the founder of Kinnar Akhada, I am hereby relieving Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi from his position as Acharya Mahamandaleshwar of the Kinnar Akhada, effective immediately.
His appointment was made with the goal of promoting religious activities and uplifting the transgender community, but he has deviated from these responsibilities.

The controversy revolves around an agreement Tripathi entered into with Juna Akhada in 2019, which Ajay Das claims was allegedly done without his approval. He further alleged that the contract between the two Akhadas was legally invalid due to the lack of his consent and signature.

Moreover, Ajay Das accused Tripathi of undermining the tenets of the Kinnar Akhada by allowing Mamta Kulkarni to join and take on the prestigious role of Mahamandaleshwar despite her past involvement in criminal activities.
Ajay Das explained that Mamta Kulkarni's appointment was particularly concerning because she had a criminal history."By giving such a person the title of Mahamandaleshwar, what kind of guru are you offering to Sanatan Dharma? This is a question of ethics," he wrote.
The founder emphasized that this appointment was not only unethical but also a betrayal of the Akhada's religious values.
The expulsion of both individuals has ignited debates within the spiritual community, with the President of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad, Mahant Ravindra Puri, speaking out in support of Tripathi and Kulkarni.
Puri challenged the legitimacy of Ajay Das's decision, saying, "I want to ask, who is he (Rishi Ajay Das) to expel Laxmi Narayan Tripathi?"He also reiterated that both Tripathi and Kulkarni would continue their roles within the Akhada and participate in the upcoming Amrit Snan.
The controversy over Mamta Kulkarni's appointment as Mahamandaleshwar began when Acharya Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi publicly announced the decision during the Maha Kumbh.
Mamta Kulkarni, who was known for her roles in popular 1990s Bollywood films, had stepped away from the limelight in the early 2000s.
However, she made a return to India and was granted the position of Mahamandaleshwar by Tripathi, an act which has now come under heavy scrutiny.
Transgender Kathavachak Jagatguru Himangi Sakhi Maa had earlier raised concerns over Kulkarni's appointment, questioning her credibility and linking her past to criminal activities."Mamta Kulkarni has been made Mahamandaleshwar for publicity. Society knows her past very well. She was even jailed in the past in connection with drug cases. This needs investigation," Himangi Sakhi said in a conversation with ANI.
Mamta Kulkarni later stepped down from her role as Mahamandaleshwar of the Kinnar Akhada after facing heavy backlash and internal disputes.
Her resignation follows questions about her spiritual standing and her past in the film industry.
The Kinnar Akhada had earlier expelled the 'Karan Arjun' actress and her mentor, Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, citing tensions within the religious group.
Kulkarni announced her resignation in a video shared on her Instagram. "Main Mahamandaleshwar Yamai Mamta Nandagiri, main iss post se istifa de rahi hoon. Aaj Kinnar Akhade ya dono akhade ke beech jo mujhe leke problems ho rahi hain. Main ek Sadhvi thi 25 saal se aur main Sadhvi hi rahungi," she said.
"Bollywood ko maine 25 saal pehle chhoda. Main apne aap gayab rahi. Warna makeup se, Bollywood se itna door kaun rehta hai?" she added.

New Delhi [India], July 25 (ANI): Bollywood actress-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut has supported the Centre's ban on OTT platforms in the country. Speaking to ANI, the 'Emergency' star said that the move was crucial to protect the country's young people and was issued in the public interest. "The ban has been imposed to ensure that our culture and the minds of the youth are not corrupted. It is important to see that our society is not headed toward a complete downfall. It was awaited for a long time," she said. Kangana also appreciated the step taken against the illegal functioning of the OTT applications. Likewise, actor Ravi Kishan has also welcomed the decision, stating that "boundaries and limits need to be set." According to sources, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has ordered the blocking of 25 over-the-top (OTT) platforms over allegedly publishing obscene, vulgar, and even pornographic material. As a part of it, platforms like Ullu, ALTT, Big Shots App, NeonX VIP, and Desiflix were found disseminating content that directly violated several provisions of Indian law, including Section 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. A total of 14 mobile applications, 26 websites have been ordered to be disabled by intermediaries under provisions of the IT Act, 2000 and the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. Much of the content showcased on the aforementioned platforms involved graphic sexual innuendos, long sequences of nudity, and pornographic visuals. Some, they believed, also had inappropriate sexual situations involving family relationships, which aggravated concerns over legality and decency. Previoulsy, in September 2024, all 25 platforms received official warnings. The Ministry also issued an advisory, asking the OTT platforms to comply with India's obscenity laws and the Code of Ethics prescribed under the IT Rules, 2021. (ANI)

Supreme Court asks Delhi HC to hear ‘Udaipur Files' petitions on Monday
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to take a call on allowing the release of the movie Udaipur Files, a controversial film based on the 2022 murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Rajasthan, and requested the Delhi high court to take up the matter on Monday. A bench of justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi said it hadn't passed any orders on the merits of the petitions on Udaipur Files (ANI) 'The high court is requested to take up the said petitions on Monday,' a bench of justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi said, underlining that it hadn't passed any orders on the merits of the petitions before it. 'It is clarified that this court has not expressed any opinion on merits and the high court is at liberty to pass appropriate orders in accordance with law,' the bench said. The court passed the order on separate petitions filed by the movie producer Jani Firefox Media Private Limited and Mohammad Javed, the prime accused in the Kanhaiya Lal murder trial. The movie maker had approached the top court against the high court's July 10 order that temporarily stayed the movie's release on a petition by Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind chief Maulana Arshad Madani, who complained that the movie vilifies the Muslim community. A second petition was filed by Javed, the accused, who claimed that the film's release would prejudice his right to a fair trial. The high court had stayed the movie to give Madani time to approach the Centre to review the film's certification. Acting on his revision plea, the Centre cleared the movie on July 21, subject to the filmmaker carrying out six additional edits, in addition to the 55 cuts already implemented. At Friday's hearing, the producer told the top court that its petition had become infructuous since the six edits had been made. Javed also said he had filed a fresh petition before the high court to seek a stay on the film's release. Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal, appearing for Madani, informed the court that he had filed a fresh petition against the Centre's July 21 order. But the bench also told him to approach the high court which will take up the petitions together. Sibal asked the court to stay the release of the movie till he approaches the high court. 'Let it not be released by Monday,' he asked. But the bench didn't respond to the oral request, noting that Madani's plea wasn't before it. 'You (Madani) have not come before this court. They (movie producers) have come. If he says, he does not want to pursue the matter as he is not aggrieved by the Centre's order. We cannot compel him to continue with the case. You should have approached the high court by now,' the bench told Sibal. Sibal said he hadn't approached the high court since the matter was pending in the top court. The bench directed the registry to return the petition filed by Madani to his lawyers and present the same before the Delhi high court for being heard on Monday. The court also heard a separate petition filed by one Satish Kumar Aggarwal who alleged that Madani has undermined the secular fabric of the country which has sustained despite the numerous terrorist attacks in the past involving members of a minority community and release of movies such as Kashmir Files (2022) and Kerala Story (2023) that were based on themes showing members of a particular community indulging in acts of crime. 'This hyper-sensitivity syndrome should be dealt with by the court and this film should be set free. This kind of censorship based on individual perceptions cannot be allowed to exist in this country,' Aggarwal said. The bench remarked, 'All these thought-provoking arguments require to be considered in an appropriate case. This question deserves to be answered. But we feel the matter needs to be heard by the high court and if any aggrieved party comes to us, we will deal with it.' The court also asked Sibal how this case differed from other movies that had been released in the past. Sibal said, 'All cases cited are different from this case for the simple reason that this movie has been seen. In other cases, it was not seen,' he said, referring to the high court's decision to arrange a private screening of the film for Madani's lawyers prior to passing the July 10 order. He also referred to the 2020 decision by the top court in the Amish Devgun case, where the court defined the parameters of hate speech and refused to stay multiple criminal proceedings against the petitioner, a TV journalist. The court told Sibal that an expert panel constituted by the Centre has reviewed the certification and found it to be fit for release. 'When an expert body takes a decision, courts will show deference to it. It does not mean that courts will not interfere. But we will not apply the test of proportionality when there is an expert body,' the bench remarked. The film producer, represented by senior advocate Gaurav Bhatia, stated that the movie was 12 days behind its scheduled release date. 'I have followed the law so far and agreed to all cuts proposed. He (Madani) cannot act as a 'super censor' and seek a stay on my movie's release.' Senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy, appearing for the accused Javed, pointed out that she has a direct right to challenge the movie's release as the trial in the Kanhaiya Lal murder trial was at a crucial stage. Javed is among the eight accused facing trial in the murder of Kanhaiya Lal in June 2022, who was killed in Udaipur after sharing a social media post endorsing the disparaging remarks made against Prophet Muhammad by former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma, during a television debate in May 2022.
