Tripura Town Hall To Be Renamed After Syama Prasad Mookerjee, Says CM Manik Shah
Speaking at the Muktadhara Auditorium in Agartala, CM Saha also declared the launch of two annual awards in Mookerjee's name. One will be presented on Teachers' Day to individuals who have made significant contributions in their respective fields. Sharing his thoughts on social media platform X, the chief minister described Mookerjee as a 'towering figure in safeguarding India's sovereignty after independence,' and praised his selfless service to the nation. 'With remarkable abilities, prestige, and intellect, he dedicated his life to nation-building, refusing to lead a self-centered existence,' Saha wrote.

He also recalled Mookerjee's distinguished public career, which included serving as India's first Industry Minister, Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University, Mayor of Calcutta, President of the Hindu Mahasabha, and the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh. According to Saha, Mookerjee's ideology continues to be relevant and remains a source of inspiration for citizens today.
The chief minister linked Mookerjee's legacy to the present, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's development vision aligns with Mookerjee's ideals and that the goal of 'Viksit Bharat 2047' is an extension of that vision. 'After PM Modi took charge in 2014, we've seen societal transformation… Earlier, Mookerjee's contributions were deliberately sidelined, but now people can see the truth,' he said.
Saha also pointed to Mookerjee's strong opposition to the Nehru-Liaquat Pact of 1950, an agreement between India and Pakistan concerning the rights and safety of minorities, as a testament to his uncompromising stance on national integrity. This disagreement ultimately led to his resignation from Jawaharlal Nehru's Cabinet.
'Dr. Mookerjee's opposition to injustice and his unwavering commitment to India's sovereignty continue to inspire the nation. His resignation over the Nehru-Liaquat Agreement is a powerful example of principled leadership,' Saha added in his post.
Earlier in the day, the chief minister paid tributes to Mookerjee at a program held at the BJP state headquarters and later participated in a door-to-door campaign across Agartala Municipal Corporation to highlight the achievements of the Modi-led central government.
The Agartala Town Hall, which is now being renamed, was originally constructed by the previous Left Front government after the demolition of Lal Mahal, a structure that was part of the erstwhile royal palace complex, which also included the Ujjayanta Palace and Laxmi Narayan Bari Temple.

HC dismisses ‘fake degree' plea against UP deputy CM Maurya
Prayagraj: The Allahabad high court on Monday dismissed a petition seeking registration of a criminal case against Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister and senior BJP leader Keshav Prasad Maurya over allegations of submitting fake educational degrees while contesting elections and obtaining a petrol pump dealership. Rejecting the revision petition filed by one Diwakar Nath Tripathi, a BJP leader and social activist from Prayagraj, Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh said, "The complainant-revisionist is not a person deceived by Keshav Prasad Maurya (second respondent in the petition). He had no locus to move an application under section 156 (3) of CrPC seeking direction to register FIR regarding the alleged offence of cheating and forgery, which are not covered under section 39 (public to give information of certain offences) of CrPC. " "The wheels of criminal justice system cannot be permitted to be clogged by frivolous complaints where a complainant himself is not aggrieved or victim in any manner," the court added. Passing the order, the bench said: "The proceedings appear to be prima facie initiated maliciously by the revisionist with oblique motives and an intention to gain some advantage or settle his score." Tripathi later challenged the ACJM's order before the high court. However, in Feb 2024, the court dismissed his revision on the ground of delay, noting that the petition was filed more than 300 days after the trial court's order. However, in Jan this year, the Supreme Court condoned the delay and directed the high court to consider the matter on the merits. Pursuant to the SC's directions, Tripathi again approached the Allahabad HC with a fresh revision petition taking the same allegations and grounds. The matter was admitted in Apr 2025, and judgment was reserved on May 23, 2025.

Brothers join hands for big Mumbai election
Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin Raj Thackeray are both important politicians from Maharashtra. Even though they had problems in the past, they are now joining hands to try and win a very big election — the BMC polls. BMC stands for Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, which is the body that runs Mumbai city. It is the richest local government in India. Uddhav used to lead the Shiv Sena party, which ruled Mumbai's BMC for many years. But in 2005, Raj left the party and started his own group, called MNS. Then in 2022, another leader, Eknath Shinde, broke away from Uddhav and became the chief minister with help from BJP (the ruling party at the national level). Now, Uddhav's party is much smaller, and Raj's party doesn't win many votes. So, both brothers are teaming up to try and win back control of Mumbai. This is very important for Uddhav, because he already lost in the state assembly elections. Winning the BMC would help him get back his political power. But it's a risky move. Raj is known for being very strong about Marathi pride and sometimes takes extreme positions. Uddhav, on the other hand, has been trying to make his party more inclusive and friendly to all people. That makes their partnership a bit confusing. Still, Raj recently showed he might be ready to work together when he said something against the central government. That opened a door for talks between the two. In the last BMC election in 2017, Shiv Sena got the most seats (84), and BJP came close (82), but no one got a clear majority. This time, the BJP is stronger, and Deputy CM Fadnavis is quietly leading their plan. So, this election is a big deal. If Uddhav and Raj win, they might get a second chance.
