
Domestic travel the main draw at Penang MATTA Fair
Besides attractive local destinations, international travel packages are also available at the two-day fair, which kicked off at the Setia SPICE Arena yesterday.
Thousands of visitors turned out as early as 10am on the first day, eagerly waiting in line at the main entrance to get into the Arena, where various tourism packages were up for grabs.
Among the first-time visitors to the fair were Nabila Salam and her husband Muhamad Wafi Ahmad Musrab, both 29, and their baby.
'We heard that the Penang MATTA Fair is offering great domestic travel deals this year, so we decided to check it out,' said Nabila.
The account administration executive shared that she and her husband were planning a trip to Sabah next year and were browsing for the most affordable travel packages available.
She added that family-friendly tour options, particularly those that include island-hopping and nature excursions, were among their top preferences.
'We're hoping to find a package that balances relaxation with some adventure, maybe something with a mix of some time at the beach and cultural activities,' she said.
Engineer Muhamad Wafi expressed interest in child-friendly deals that include accommodation and transportation.
'Travelling with a baby means we need convenience. If meals, airport transfers or guided tours are included, that's a big plus,' he said.
Administration executive Joan Tan and her friend Summer Yeoh, both 30, want to look for the best bargains before deciding where to go.
'Actually, we are planning for Japan, but there are so many other interesting destination packages on offer here,' said Tan.
Yeoh said they still had one more day to look for good and affordable packages.
'We will look around first before deciding where to go, but Japan will definitely be our first option,' she added.
Exhibitors are looking forward to a rousing response from visitors.
An exhibitor from Kota Kinabalu, Wilrialyn William, said one of the most sought-after packages in Sabah is the five-day, four-night Kundasang package, available for RM1,516 to RM1,239 per person.
'This ground package includes a visit to Jambatan Tamparuli, Kundasang, Desa Farm and island-hopping to Manukan and Sapi islands,' she said.
The sales and reservation executive, 42, said there are also three day, two-night packages worth less than RM300 for Malaysian citizens.
Travel tour company manager Nurin Afrina Batrisyia Mohd Khairul Nizam, 21, said there are plenty of international travel packages offered by her company.
'Among the popular destinations are Turkiye, Vietnam, Japan and Yunnan in China,' she said, adding that the packages are priced between RM1,000 and RM8,000 depending on the destination.
She noted that Europe is also a popular holiday choice, with favourite destinations including the Balkan region and Central Europe.
MATTA Penang chapter chairman Carolyn Leong said the first day of the event was positive, with visitors lining up at the entrance from as early as 10am.
'We expect some 45,000 visitors to attend the two-day event,' she said.
Leong noted that visitors can look forward to various packages for domestic tourist destinations such as Sabah and Sarawak, with direct flights from Penang through Malaysia Airlines (MAS).
Regarding international travel packages, she said China is expected to be a major market, driven by the recent implementation of visa-free policies.
Industry observers anticipate a surge in outbound travel to China.
State tourism committee chairman Wong Hon Wai launched the start of the fair yesterday.
In his speech, he highlighted an important new feature at this year's fair – the Domestic Tourism Zone – which was being introduced for the first time.
'It's a great initiative to help more Malaysians explore the beauty of our own country.
'Local tourism has great potential, and this zone gives it the space and attention it deserves,' he said.
This year's fair features 258 booths by 90 exhibitors, covering 7,427sqm on two levels of the Arena.
Among the participants are 60 tour and travel agencies, the Uganda Tourism Board, 11 hotels and resorts, a theme park and an airline company.

For a relaxing holiday, folks in Finland pay to herd sheep
Finnish holidaygoers are clamouring to shell out hundreds of euros to work as shepherds for a week as a vacation, seeking tranquillity in nature and a chance to disconnect from their busy lives. Petri Stenberg is enjoying a 'shepherd week' together with his wife Oona and their two children Fia, age two, and Hugo, four, on an old farm on an island in the Isojarvi national park in central Finland. The popular holiday scheme, organised by the Metsahallitus company that manages and protects state-owned land and water areas, allows the family to combine recreation and nature conservation. 'We are living very close to nature here. We feed the sheep a couple of times a day, we have been to the sauna, swam and gone fishing,' said Oona, who works as a physiotherapist. 'Not once have I seen any news here. There's no TV here, we haven't browsed our phones. So in a way, my mind has somehow calmed down and I'm just concentrating on being here,' she added. Accessible only by row boat or on foot through the forest and across a bridge, the old farm is one of around a dozen remote sites across Finland to which Finns can apply for a week-long holiday taking care of sheep. Historically, grazing sheep and other animals have played a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity and habitats for flora and fauna at the various locations. But changed forestry and agricultural practices, including a 'dramatic' decline in the number of small farms in Finland, have seen these traditional biotopes of so-called semi-natural grasslands and wooded pastures become an endangered part of Finland's nature, explained Metsahallitus expert Leena Hiltunen. 'The main purpose of the shepherd weeks is to increase people's knowledge about these traditional biotopes,' Hiltunen said. The vegetation on the Isojarvi island was traditionally kept light and lush as grazing sheep prevented overgrowth, providing the necessary ecosystem for now-endangered plant and insect species. Compared to the 1950s, less than 1% of Finland's traditional biotopes and landscapes remain, according to Metsahallitus, with most of them now located in protected areas. 'Appreciation and protection of nature is so important ... So it is really important for all of us to learn about it and for children to learn to appreciate it,' said Oona. Popular holiday Metsahallitus received 12,764 applications from 2,236 – many applying for more than one site – for this year's summer season. A total of 158 shepherd weeks are selected through a lottery. 'There has been a great deal of interest,' Hiltunen said. The Stenberg family, who lives in Vantaa, just north of Helsinki, applied a few times until they finally got lucky this year. A week typically costs between €400 and €670 (RM1,979 and RM3,216) at most locations. The housing is spartan and simple, in huts or cottages often lacking running water and sometimes even electricity. 'Some people have asked us why we wanted to pay to herd sheep and do some yard work,' laughed Oona. 'But it is really an experience for us, and the kids are loving it,' she added, sipping from her coffee cup outside the family's yellow cottage, surrounded by old wooden outhouses and a sauna overlooking the lake. In Finland, many people spend their summers in rustic countryside cottages. Hiltunen said only Finns could apply for the shepherd weeks because it was crucial to know 'how to manage the modest lifestyle' in nature on one's own. 'We don't have enough resources to advertise it internationally, or have someone there nearby advising how things work,' she said. On the lakeland island, a sense of complete serenity hung in the air, the grey sky suggesting rain was on its way. The family had been instructed to count the dozen sheep every day '... and make sure their overall health is good, that they are eating enough and checking that the fencing is intact,' said Stenberg, who drives excavators for a living. The small farm was a working farm until 1989 and was bought by Metsahallitus in the 1990s. Flipping through the pages of a notebook inside the house, Stenberg showed writings and a few sketches of sheep from previous visitors who documented their daily life and observations. Malaysia strengthens Vietnam tourism ties for VM2026
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is stepping up efforts to strengthen bilateral tourism cooperation with Vietnam as part of its strategic preparations for Visit Malaysia 2026. Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the initiative aims to boost market visibility and foster deeper engagement between industry players from both countries. 'Our visit aimed to strengthen bilateral tourism ties between Malaysia and Vietnam, particularly in laying the foundation for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 through enhanced market promotion and industry collaboration,' he said in a Facebook post today. During the meeting, Tiong was warmly welcomed by Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association (HTA) president Nguyen Thi Khanh, along with several vice presidents and association representatives. Although Vietnam records about 10 million outbound travellers annually, only a small percentage currently choose Malaysia as their destination. 'We aim to change this by introducing joint promotions, bundled packages, and targeted travel experiences to encourage Vietnamese tourists to explore Malaysia more deeply, particularly secondary cities and cultural or natural attractions in Perak, Pahang, Melaka, Sarawak, and Sabah,' he said.
