Lime renews vows with Uber ahead of busy summer season

Lime, the shared scooter and bike company, is getting ready for another busy summer by cozying up to one of its biggest supporters, Uber.
The two companies recently signed a new multiyear agreement that allows Uber to continue to feature Lime's shared bikes and scooters on its ridehail app. As part of the deal, Lime's rented bikes and scooters will continue to appear in Uber's app in the markets in which they overlap, including the US, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The previous agreement was set to expire later this year.
'We're pleased to extend this fruitful relationship into the future so riders can discover and quickly book Lime on the Uber platform,' said Wayne Ting, CEO of Lime, in a statement. 'Working with Uber has allowed us to reach even more people and provide more riders with shared, affordable, emissions-free transportation through one of the largest transportation platforms in the world. This deal further solidifies Lime as the go-to option for two-wheeled travel in cities.'
Uber also recently announced that Lime would be included as part of its Uber One subscription members, offering 10 percent cash back on all Lime rides.
Uber and Lime first came together during the height of the scooter boom in 2018, with the ridehail giant joining a $335 million round of financing led by Alphabet's venture arm, GV. That was the first time Lime's bikes and scooters became available for rent on Uber's app. During the covid pandemic, Uber threw a crucial lifeline to Lime, investing $170 million in the company in exchange for Lime acquiring Uber's Jump bike and scooter business. Today, Uber holds a 29 percent stake in Lime.
And as the pandemic progressed, the deal positioned Lime to pull ahead of many of its struggling rivals. As other companies floundered, Lime scootered past all the mergers and bankruptcies, and now presents itself as the leading shared micromobility company in the world. Earlier this year, the company published its 2024 financial results, in which it touted a fourth consecutive year of over 30 percent growth, second consecutive year of positive free cash flow, and $810 million in gross bookings.
And as the summer busy season approaches, Lime is setting its sight on new markets. The company recently launched in Barcelona, and later this year plans on expanding into Mexico. Its also continuing to scale its latest vehicles, the LimeBike and pedal-less LimeGlider, with launches in nearly a dozen cities over the past two months. Of the two new bikes, Lime says it plans to reach a fleet of more than 15,000 deployed vehicles globally in 2025. (The Glider is only available in North America, as the EU requires that throttle-only e-bikes be classified as mopeds.)
Lime's bullishness on its business comes as the company recently hit a new record for daily ridership, surpassing 1 million rides in a single day on May 31st — and then again on June 1st. Lime says riders also recently exceeded 10 billion minutes using the platform, across more than 800 million individual trips since Lime's service began in 2017.
Lime's decision to continue partnering with Uber comes as the ridehail company's main rival, Lyft, hikes the prices of its main bikeshare service, Citi Bike in New York. Lyft had been exploring a possible sale of Citi Bike, but now says it plans on expanding the service in the outer boroughs later this year.
Uber says its deal with Lime helps get it closer to its goal to be a zero-emission platform by 2040. 'Lime has been an impactful partner in our efforts to make transportation easier, more affordable, and more sustainable,' Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, said in a statement. With widespread global use through Uber in over 200 cities, this next chapter is about scaling up together—and giving riders even more ways to get where they're going without owning a car.'

Gabelli Funds highlights the AI stocks to buy as craze continues

The trillion-dollar investment cycle into generative artificial intelligence is only just beginning, and is already starting to pay off, according to John Belton, portfolio manager at Gabelli Funds. Tech companies are set to invest roughly $1 trillion in capital expenditures into AI infrastructure over the coming years, causing some investors to worry the businesses may be spending too much for not enough payoff. In 2025 alone, Google parent Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms and Microsoft are planning to spend as much as $320 billion combined on AI technologies and data center buildouts. However, early signs suggest investors have yet to grasp the full potential of generative AI, given that some initial investments are already starting to bear fruit, according to Belton. "This is a trillion-dollar investment cycle," Belton told attendees during a panel on AI at the Morningstar Investment Conference in Chicago. "Adoption and usage is really only now starting to hit this very steep part of the so-called S-curve, another two and a half years after the launch of ChatGPT." "The largest investors in AI infrastructure are generating the most attractive returns today," he said. The portfolio manager of the Gabelli Growth Fund has significant exposure to the "Magnificent Seven" companies, with Microsoft, Nvidia and Amazon being its top three holdings. This year, the fund has outperformed, sitting in the top 12% of funds in its category, according to Morningstar data . Yet, there are two reasons to remain confident in the potential for AI, Belton said. Specifically, the cost of the technology is coming down, while its capabilities are improving, meaning the number of use cases for companies is growing. Belton said AI capabilities are already superior to human capabilities across a wide range of disciplines, including reading comprehension, science and math. "As AI is becoming cheaper and more capable, the vision is that it's just going to be used in more and more corporate productivity initiatives," Belton said. "And it's going to be used as in many cases, a labor replacement across enterprises, in all different sectors, in all different parts of the enterprise." Some examples include using AI to cut supply chain costs, or to generate revenue across marketing and operations departments. Meta Platforms , for example, is already using AI for targeted advertisements, a change that has helped the tech company boost sales. Meanwhile, tech companies such as Alphabet and Microsoft have recently divulged that AI is already generating roughly 30% of their internal database, suggesting the role of a software engineer and developer will change. Other use cases are still emerging, including AI used in autonomous vehicles such as at Tesla , as well as drug discovery in health care. Given this, here are some of the companies that can tap into AI potential, Belton said. NOW YTD mountain ServiceNow shares year to date ServiceNow is one holding with a roughly 2% weighting in the Gabelli Growth Fund. The enterprise software firm sells agentic technology to help companies to automate their businesses. Agentic revenue is already tracking close to 10% next year, Belton said, adding it's a small but promising sign of a "big, exciting" new area for growth. Broadcom shares are another holding that has exposure to the AI theme. The stock is up more than 16% this year, and is a consensus buy on the Street, according to LSEG. GE Vernova and Applied Materials are two other holdings that can benefit from the AI theme, according to the investor. AVGO YTD mountain Broadcom shares year to date.

Why Are Tesla, Apple, and Alphabet Underperforming the "Magnificent Seven" and the S&P 500?

Investors are rewarding big tech companies that are monetizing AI. Tesla, Apple, and Alphabet could be coiled springs for long-term growth. Tesla needs its big bets to pay off. These 10 stocks could mint the next wave of millionaires › The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) has more than recovered its losses from earlier this year and is now up nearly 4.4% year to date. Many mega-cap tech-focused companies have posted sizable gains -- including "Magnificent Seven" members Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META), Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), and Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA). But investors may be souring on Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), and Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) due, in part, to their apparent lack of artificial intelligence (AI) achievements. Here's what's going wrong for these growth stocks, and whether they are buys now. A great divide has appeared through the Magnificent Seven between companies whose investment theses have been enhanced by AI and those whose theses have not. Perhaps the simplest reason why Tesla, Apple, and Alphabet are underperforming their Magnificent Seven peers is that they are on the unfavorable side of this great divide. Just a couple of months ago, Tesla was down around 45% in 2025. It has recovered a substantial amount of those losses despite plummeting vehicle deliveries. Tesla stock popped after its robotaxi event showcased progress on self-driving cars. Some investors have been waiting nearly a decade for this update, so it's understandable that the stock reacted favorably to the event. Given the weak results in Tesla's core business, Tesla's investment thesis increasingly relies on longer-term bets on self-driving cars and robotics. Tesla could benefit from AI one day, but it isn't monetizing it to a significant extent right now. Apple is in a similar boat. Its core business is selling tech-focused consumer products and services. Apple hasn't made meaningful AI improvements to its product suite, but it has released a slew of new tools and a software interface update that tout AI capabilities. However, it remains to be seen if Apple will be a net beneficiary of AI. AI presents arguably the best opportunity in decades for competition to tap into Apple's dominant smartphone market share. Apple has grown increasingly dependent on sales outside the U.S., but has been losing market share in key markets like China due to intense competition from companies like Xiaomi, Huawei, and Vivo. Like Tesla, Apple could benefit from AI in the near future. But so far, AI simply hasn't been a catalyst for the company in the same way it has for other mega-cap tech-focused companies. Alphabet is much more of a mixed bag. AI growth is a boon for cloud computing, and Google Cloud is the No. 3 player in the space behind Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Alphabet-owned YouTube can also benefit from AI, as it helps creators produce content and streamline suggested videos and advertisements better targeted to individual users. Google's self-driving car project, Waymo, could also benefit from AI. Alphabet-owned generative AI model Gemini is a multimodal tool -- meaning it can work with text, audio, visuals, video, and even code. Gemini got off to a rocky start, but now it's a major player in the chatbot space, along with OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude, and other generative AI companies. However, the elephant in the room is uncertainty about how AI could affect Alphabet's cash cow, Google Search. Integrating Gemini with Google Search, or simply changing Google Search from a web page ranking tool to an interactive information powerhouse, could be a simple and effective way for Alphabet to hold its own despite mounting competition. But there's no denying that Google Search is facing its biggest challenge in decades from competitors' AI-powered search offerings. That uncertainty alone, despite all the other ways Alphabet benefits from AI, has led some investors to avoid and/or dump the stock. Buying Tesla, Apple, or Alphabet is a belief that these companies will be able to adapt in the age of AI -- even if they don't benefit drastically from it. Tesla is arguably the highest-risk name given its lofty valuation (it has the highest price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio and highest forward P/E ratio of the Magnificent Seven). But Apple and Alphabet both have more reasonable valuations (31.2 P/E for Apple and just 18.6 for Alphabet). These companies also generate a ton of free cash flow and earnings that they can use to reinvest in the business and return capital to shareholders through buybacks and dividends. Additionally, Apple and Alphabet have substantially more cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities on their balance sheets than long-term debt. Apple's big product launch this September could be just what the company needs to prove that it has the hardware and software to attract Wall Street's attention. Alphabet investors should continue to monitor the performance of the company's services segment, which is led by Google Search. So far, Google Search ad revenue has been incredibly strong despite increased adoption of ChatGPT and other competition. Until that trend shifts, it's hard to get too pessimistic about Alphabet, especially with potential upside from Gemini and Waymo. The beauty about being an individual investor is that you don't have to agree with Wall Street sentiment and can take advantage of when great companies go on sale. Short-term-minded investors may pass on Tesla, Apple, and Alphabet simply because they aren't proven AI plays, but all three stocks could still be worth buying and holding for long-term investors. At this juncture, Apple and Alphabet present far more compelling risk and potential reward profiles than Tesla -- especially Alphabet, given its dirt-cheap valuation. So Alphabet would be my top pick of these three underperformers, with Apple as a close second.
