Luke Hodge answers burning question as son Cooper joins Hawks training

7NEWS4 days ago
It's the picture every Hawthorn fan wants to see.
Cooper Hodge, the son of champion Luke, training with Hawks players at the club's Waverley Park headquarters on Tuesday.
But before fans get too excited about the prospect of the talented teenager following in his famous father's footsteps, there is still one decision to be made.
Cooper, who is expected to nominate for next year's AFL draft, will be eligible to join Hawthorn as a father-son selection, but is also a member of Brisbane's academy.
It means he effectively has the choice of which club he wants to join, should they both deem him good enough to make it in the AFL.
Whichever club he decides on will then have priority access to Hodge at the draft.
Channel 7's cameras showed footage of Cooper mixing it with Hawthorn players at training on Tuesday and Luke was asked about it on The Agenda Setters.
'Yeah, well, they got him down. CJ's brother was out there as well. I think Mark Williams' son was supposed to be out there as well, but he rolled his ankle,' Hodge said.
'It was a good day once again going down there to really convince a young guy to come. They turned on the weather. It was about four degrees down there. I couldn't feel my hands.
'It was another good experience. He went out there and enjoyed the club.'
Cooper, who lives in Brisbane with his family, stayed at Jarryd Roughead's house during his time in Melbourne.
Roughead, a former teammate and close friend of Luke, now works in Hawthorn's list management team.
But Luke denied there was any special treatment for his son.
'It's a former teammate and a mate who's known Coop his whole life,' Luke said.
'He stayed at his house, but that's not surprising considering we don't have any family in Melbourne. My brother's down in Geelong, so the easiest thing was just to get him to stay at Roughy's.'
The Agenda Setters host Kane Cornes then asked Hodge 'what percentage is he Hawthorn and what percentage is he Brisbane'.
'He's about 50-50,' he joked.
'No, listen, it's a good experience for him. He's a 16-year-old kid who gets the opportunity to go down and spend two days.
'I 100 per cent understand (the level of interest in this), but the only thing is he's a 16-year-old kid who has the flexibility or he's been lucky enough to spend two days at Hawthorn.
'But then on the flip side, with the Brisbane Lions academy, he's been lucky enough over the last two years to be able to enjoy and spend time with some of the players and get coached by Grant Brichall and Mitch Hahn and these kind of guys.
'So he's been very fortunate and he's really loving football at the moment.'
The situation is similar to Sydney star Nick Blakey, who is the son of John Blakey.
John played over 200 games for North Melbourne and over 130 for Fitzroy, but he was an assistant at Sydney and Nick ended up at the Sydney academy.
Nick was eligible as a father-son for North and Brisbane but ultimately elected to be with Sydney. He was taken by the Swans with pick 10 in the 2018 draft, disappointing many North Melbourne fans.

Emotions ran high as the Giants farewelled legend with inspirational Super Netball win

Emotions ran high as Giants Netball farewelled their retiring skipper Jo Harten in style, celebrating a 15 point win over the Melbourne Mavericks in Sydney. One of her club's foundation players, Harten announced this week that she was calling time on a decorated 20 year playing career. With her long term coach, Julie Fitzgerald, in tears on the sidelines before the match even started, the former English Rose played a pivotal role in the win, using her game smarts to outfox opponents in the 74 to 59 point Super Netball victory. Harten went on to finish the match with 33 points, including seven from range, with a buzzer beater as her last ever touch of the ball. Speaking post match, Fitzgerald said, 'Watching her grow into the person she's become is probably more important to me than the netball. 'It's going to continue. She might take her bib off but she'll still have a big impact on netball in the world.' Giants started slowly without youngster Erin O'Brien, who'd been named at goal defence but was missing when the opening whistle blew. One of her side's most consistent performers, O'Brien appeared halfway through the first quarter with a heavily strapped shoulder, after tweaking it in their warmup. With her return, the Giants upped their tempo after a poor start, to bring the scores back to almost level at quarter time. O'Brien went on to have a huge influence on the game, picking off five gains, as she underscored her credentials for a possible Diamonds' callup. With both sides ramping up their defensive pressure, while also making a range of attacking errors, there were multiple changes of possession in the second quarter. Centre Molly Jovic ran a marathon for the Mavericks as the ball pinged from end to end, finishing with 42 feeds and two valuable pickups. With the game locked on level terms at half time, Giant Jamie-Lee Price told commentary that the game was 'messy'. She said, 'We're getting plenty of ball, but we're just not scoring off it.' 'It's so simple, just score goals. I feel like we should be ahead by way more, but we're just making errors.' Despite most Mavericks playing for contracts, a blistering Giants second half saw them take the eventual win. Eight spaces still remain on the Melbourne based side's roster, and they could snaffle Jamie-Lee Price. Commentator Kim Green potentially let the cat out of the bag, letting slip that she has played her last game for the Giants. While the co-captain has a year left to run on her contract, there's been plenty of speculation that she will be released to head south and join her AFL-playing partner in Melbourne. closing things out in style ðŸ Watch every game live on Kayo Sports, Foxtel and Binge. — Suncorp Super Netball (@SuperNetball) July 12, 2025 HARTEN HANGS UP HER DRESS Jo Harten retires as one of netball's greats, having played 202 National League games and 117 tests for England. Among those was the Roses' historic Commonwealth Games medal in 2018, where they upset Australia on home soil. Known for her leadership, court craft and accuracy under the post, Harten has coaching experience with the Roses already under her belt, as she views a possible career in that space. MAVERICKS ON A MISSION As the Super Netball season comes to a close, Mavericks will be on a mission to bolster their ranks. Currently, captain Amy Parmenter and defender Kim Brown are the only two players contracted for 2026, with even the future of coach Tracey Neville up in the air. If the injury plagued side is hoping to climb the ladder next year, they will need a mixture of better luck and stronger roster in several areas of the court. With teams unable to talk to players from other clubs until the season has ended, it could explain why they still have a number of contracts waiting to be filled.

Live updates: Fremantle look to silence finals critics in massive Hawthorn test

Fremantle have made a bold positional call as they look to answer their finals critics in a Saturday night blockbuster against Hawthorn. Ruckman Sean Darcy has curiously been named on the wing, while Hawks tagger Finn Maginness has been named on the bench. Can the Dockers answer some questions around their finals credentials and down the Hollywood Hawks? Follow all the action live! The Dockers have won six of their last seven matches against Hawthorn by an average winning margin of 35 points. Serong is obviously the key as he was last week but the ruck battle between fromer Docker Lloyd Meek and Luke Jackson, and Sean Darcy will also have a huge say.

Tomato Toastie triumphs in thrilling finish at Royal Randwick

Promising youngster Tomato Toastie ended her successful debut preparation on a high note when the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained filly held off Crossbow at Royal Randwick on Saturday. Tomato Toastie showed tenacity over the concluding stages as Crossbow made a surging run along the fence in a desperately tight finish to the Schweppes 2YO Handicap (1400m). 'It was a really tough win,' Bott said. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'It was a relatively quick turnaround off a Heavy 10 track (run last start) and coming to a nice testing career here early in her career. 'She was out on her feet late. She is not an overly big filly but there is a stack of improvement to come.' Tomato Toastie got her maiden out of the way at start two 10 days earlier when she relished Heavy 10 conditions at Warwick Farm. It encouraged Waterhouse and Bott to give emerging daughter of star stallion Too Darn Hot her chance in Saturday company and she didn't disappoint. Jockey Regan Bayliss landed in a prominent position with Tomato Toastie ($4.80) only trailing Pillow Fight ($3.60), which races in the same colours of owners Cunningham Thoroughbreds. Pillow Fight didn't have much to offer in the straight and was quick to drop off as Tomato Toastie stayed strong to the line, edging out Chris Waller's Crossbow ($2.70 favourite) by a short half head with Kokatahi ($8.50) a further 1½ lengths way. 'She is tough and tenacious,' Bayliss said. 'Not only did she won on a heavy track over six furlongs the other day, she has backed it up over 1400m in quite a smart field. 'She has done a good job.' Tomato Toastie hails from a family well known to Bott and most assuredly Waterhouse. The filly's dam, Al Naifa, is a half-sister to the English who was crowned Champion Female Sprinter in Australia for the 2016/17 season. Tomato Toastie was from the second crop of Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber's champion racehorse Too Darn Hot whose service fee has risen from $44,000 to $275,000 in quick time owing to his spectacular success in Australia. So much so that the Godolphin resident was recently announced as the stallion of choice this spring for Hall Of fame legend, Winx. Tomato Toastie still has the best of her racing career ahead of her but punters will have to wait a while to see her back at the races. 'She will go for a well-deserved break,' Bott said. 'She has got some maturing to do but she is going out with back-to-back wins and a lot to look forward to. 'We made the call to come here today, thinking we will give her one more run while we can now then we can give her a good break that she deserves. 'Rushing her around for the spring is probably not the right sort of thing to do just yet so that might set us up nicely for a good autumn campaign in time.' Runner-up Crossbow was unlucky in defeat after losing some momentum at the top of the straight when Pillow Fight slowed in front of him. The son of Better Than Ready made a strong charge when jockey Jason Collett got clear air. 'When I went back to the inside, he put his head on the side and just wanted to lay out a bit,' Collett said. 'He's still doing a few things wrong but he's got it there. 'I think me can stretch out to the mile but we'll just let him tell as us he gets further into his career.' Stablemate Kokatahi looked the winner at the 300m but ran out of gas over the concluding stages.
