Lyon ‘must find £172MILLION to stop relegation from Ligue 1' as Crystal Palace nervously wait for Europa League decision

The Sun8 hours ago
LYON have been slapped with a £172million cash demand to avoid relegation to Ligue 2 - as Crystal Palace's Europa League hopes hang in the balance.
French financial watchdogs have warned the seven-time Ligue 1 champions that they must balance their books fast or face being forcibly demoted to Ligue 2.

Lyon, who qualified for the Europa League on the pitch last season, are on the brink of an administrative meltdown.
According to L'Equipe, a probe by the Direction Nationale du Controle de Gestion (DNCG) found a giant hole in their finances.
If they fail to plug the £172million black hole, Lyon's relegation from Ligue 1 will not be overturned, piling on the misery for fans of the former giants.
And the chaos in France could have a ripple effect across the Channel, with Crystal Palace sweating on a potential Europa League reprieve.
The Eagles' Europa League spot for winning the FA Cup is under threat due to UEFA's multi-club ownership rules.
John Textor, who owns Lyon through his Eagle Football Group, is selling his 43 per cent share in Palace to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson.
If the French club are successful with their appeal, Palace are likely to be demoted to the Conference League, although they could challenge the decision at CAS.
However, the Eagles will most likely keep their Europa League spot if Lyon are unable to raise the £172million and lose their appeal.
Palace bosses have been in talks with UEFA's Club Financial Control Body to try and find a solution to the situation.
But a verdict from the governing body has been put on ice pending the outcome of Lyon's relegation appeal.
In some positive news for Palace, SunSport can exclusively reveal that Eagles midfielder Cheick Doucoure is close to returning to full fitness.
The midfielder missed a chunk of last season due to a knee operation but he is back on the grass ahead of pre-season next week.
Moroccan defender Chadi Riad, who ruptured his cruciate ligament, is also back running, although it is unclear if he will be ready to go straight into the team for the start of next season.
The potential return of the duo could serve as a major boost to manager Oliver Glasner, who is looking to build on last season's success.
The Eagles finished 12th in the league last season but won the FA Cup — their first ever major trophy.

Kyle Walker set for surprise move to Burnley after eight-year spell with Manchester City

Kyle Walker is set for a surprise switch to Burnley with the promoted club closing in on the signing of the former Manchester City captain in a transfer that could be worth £5m. The England international is likely to become Burnley's highest-profile recruit of the summer so far and is expected to sign a two-year deal at Turf Moor. It would end Walker's eight-year association with City, though he has not played for them since January after first asking to be omitted from the squad to explore the possibility of a move and then joining AC Milan on loan. The 35-year-old was a £50m signing from Tottenham in 2017 and played alongside Burnley manager Scott Parker at the start of his Spurs career. Walker made 319 appearances for City, winning six Premier League titles and two trebles. He has one season left on the three-year deal he signed in 2023, when he replaced Ilkay Gundogan as City captain. But he was left out of the City squad for the Club World Cup and manager Pep Guardiola is keen to trim his group of players, which he feels is too big. Burnley have already made eight summer signings, with Jaidon Anthony, Marcus Edwards, Bashir Humphreys and Zian Flemming joining permanently after loan spells with the Clarets last season. They have also bought goalkeeper Max Weiss, defender Quilindschy Hartman and winger Loum Tchaouna, while signing Axel Tuanzebe on a free transfer.

France joins European push for satellite internet on trains

July 4 (Reuters) - France's state-owned rail company SNCF will launch a tender soon to add satellite internet to its trains, becoming the latest European rail operator to explore space-based systems for onboard connectivity. In a statement to Reuters, SNCF said on Friday it was pursuing an "innovative approach to strengthen connectivity and resilience" by combining terrestrial networks with low Earth-orbit satellite solutions. The company said the strategy aims to ensure service continuity across its entire network, including isolated sites, and guarantee better internet access for train passengers. "The satellite plus 4G/5G combination would eliminate dead zones and offer stable, fast service adapted to new uses such as streaming or video conferencing," SNCF said. Elon Musk's Starlink and France's Eutelsat ( opens new tab are among the companies being considered, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters. SNCF would not discuss with Reuters whether it was in talks with specific providers. A Eutelsat spokesperson confirmed the company's interest in the deal as it is already in talks with SNCF about setting up a pilot project as they have already done in Britain and Kazakhstan. "As one of only two LEO (low Earth orbit) operators currently in service, and the only French player, we intend to bid for the contract with our French partners such as Orange ( opens new tab business services," the spokesperson said. Starlink, which initially focused on consumer services, has expanded into enterprise markets, particularly in transportation and maritime sectors. Eutelsat, propped up by the French government in its push for LEO services, provides internet access through its OneWeb network of more than 600 LEO satellites. The move follows similar initiatives across Europe. Italy's state railway Ferrovie dello Stato ran a two-week trial in June with two providers, including Starlink, Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini said in May. Scotland's ScotRail also launched a six-week Starlink trial in May. Most European trains rely on cellular networks for internet access. However, connection quality varies with mobile network coverage, often dropping in rural areas or tunnels. The high speeds of trains also create technical challenges as systems must constantly switch between mobile towers, causing intermittent service. Satellites, on the other hand, offer consistent coverage everywhere, including remote areas where cellular towers are sparse or nonexistent.
