RM162m for social programmes: Chief Minister

Tuaran: The State Ministry of Community Development and People's Wellbeing and its agencies have been allocated more than RM162 million this year to implement various social programmes that benefit the people. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said RM76.29 million of the allocation is for the benefit of persons with disabilities (PwD), senior citizens, single mothers, children and orphans through the implementation of various specifically targeted assistance schemes.
Advertisement 'RM956,000 is allocated for programmes on people's wellbeing, covering aspects of family, consumerism, women's development and healthy lifestyles,' he said at the opening of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development's (KPWKM) Kembara Kasih Programme and the opening of the Sabah Mobile Local Social Support Centre (PSSS), here, Friday. Also present was Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. Hajiji said RM550,000 was channelled to the Sabah Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam) for programmes to curb drug abuse, especially among school students. He said KPWKM had also channelled various forms of assistance and services to the people of Sabah, including the Sabah Flood Disaster Assistance 2025.
Advertisement The allocation included by the National Welfare Foundation of RM300,000 and RM2.1 million allocated for the needs of 384 relief centres in the State. According to the Chief Minister, under the Federal Financial Assistance Programme, RM330 million had been allocated, of which RM315 million is for distribution to 45,572 aid recipients under the Social Welfare Department (JKM). Regarding the launch of the PSSS, Hajiji described the initiative as a timely and necessary response to the nation's growing mental health crisis. This comes in light of reports from the Health Ministry, revealing that more than five million Malaysians are currently struggling with depression, anxiety and stress, alongside a concerning rise in suicide cases. 'It is hoped that this mobile PSSS will be able to reach rural communities and provide much-needed psychosocial support, including for those affected by divorce, abuse, unemployment and financial burdens," he said. The KPWKM 2025 Kembara Kasih programme involves two main zones in Sabah, namely Tuaran, Papar and Penampang (Zone 1), as well as Lahad Datu, Kunak and Tawau (Zone 2), bringing together various government agencies to deliver comprehensive welfare services to the people. Hajiji also expressed hope that such programmes will continue and be expanded to other areas in the future as part of efforts to further enhance the people's wellbeing. Charity dinner to raise funds for dialysis centre in Mentakab on Nov 1

THE Pahang Buddhist Association (PBA) haemodialysis centre in Mentakab is organising a charity dinner to raise funds in view of increasing operating costs. Event organising chairman Datuk Hiang A Li said the centre's average monthly expenses amounted to some RM100,000. 'Many patients could not afford to pay the full fees and due to this and other operational costs, the centre exceeded its budget by over RM360,000 last year. 'To continue running the centre and provide quality renal treatment, we have decided to host a fundraising dinner,' he said when announcing the details of the programme to kickstart the donation drive. The dinner will be held on Nov 1 at SMJK Hwa Lian school hall in Mentakab. Hiang, who is also the school's board of governors chairman, said private haemodialysis centres charge between RM280 and M300 per session. He said patients in PBA Mentakab centre paid between RM20 and RM100, depending on their family income and affordability. 'Through the charity dinner, we hope to raise about RM3mil for the funds to last for the next five years. 'We urge the public to support us so that we can continue to give quality treatment to all needy patients,' he said, adding that all donations would be exempt from tax. Separately, PBA deputy president Datuk Franky Chua Goon Eng said the Kuantan haemodialysis centre was set up in 1996 to assist renal patients from all races. He said over the years, some 300 patients, especially those who could not afford to pay the full fees, benefitted from the initiative. 'In 2018, we opened our second centre to assist those residing in Temerloh and Mentakab. To date, we have 10 dialysis machines there, treating 26 patients. 'Our main aim is to help less fortunate patients, urgent cases and not for profit,' he said. Chua also said every year, the number of patients was increasing with some getting younger. He added that both centres also offered haemodiafiltration (HDF) treatment, the highest standard of dialysis. 'These HDF machines can significantly reduce complications post-dialysis, aligning with the centre's goal of helping patients resume their daily lives. 'So far, we have eight HDF machines,' said Chua, who also urged the people to go for regular check-ups and adopt a healthy lifestyle. Free spectacles for 500 pupils from B40 families in KL

The recipients will be identified via eye screening of Year One to Three pupils from five primary schools – SK Seri Bintang Utara, SK Sungai Penchala, SK Seri Mega, SK Tun Hussein Onn and SK Jalan Bellamy. Introduced in five primary schools last year, the initiative called Mata Hati Wilayah is entering its second year. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the initiative was a social intervention to help children from B40 families who could not afford glasses. She said a 2023 Health Ministry study found that nearly 30% of young Malaysian children suffered from poor eyesight. 'What's even more worrying is that they are probably not even aware and this may have an impact on their academic performance and self-esteem,' she said during the programme's launch at SK Seri Bintang Utara in Cheras. At the event, the minister also announced a RM10,000 allocation to the school to support its commitment in ensuring the success of the programme. To widen access to proper eye care for the underprivileged, Dr Zaliha said she would also propose that the Education Ministry incorporate screening into orientation programmes for Year One pupils. 'This is important as poor eyesight has been linked to delayed cognitive and language development in children,' she added. Also present were Education Ministry deputy director-general (school operations) Zainal Abas, JWP deputy director-general (socio-economic and management) Datuk Parang Abai @ Thomas and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Community and Urban Wellbeing Department director Badrul Hisham Baharuddin.

Federal court grants RM50k bail to businessmen in organised crime case
PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Court has approved bail of RM50,000 each for two businessmen facing charges of involvement in an organised crime group, pending their trial. A three-member panel, led by Federal Court judge Tan Sri Nallini Pathmanathan, delivered the decision in a 2-1 majority ruling. The court imposed strict conditions, requiring the accused to wear electronic monitoring devices and remain within their home compounds. They must also seek police permission before leaving their residences and report to the nearest police station biweekly. Exceptions were made for hospital visits related to their medical conditions. Justice Nallini noted that the bail approval was primarily due to the defendants' health issues and the prison system's inability to provide adequate medical care. S. Hemanathan, 31, uses a wheelchair and suffers from diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol, while N. Nithiyan, 39, has ischemic heart disease and other cardiovascular risks. Defence counsel Datuk Rajpal Singh argued that inconsistent prison treatment could worsen their conditions, potentially leading to life-threatening complications. Deputy Public Prosecutor Ng Siew Wee countered that both men had received necessary medical attention and their conditions were stable. The duo was charged in May 2023 under Section 130V of the Penal Code, linked to their alleged involvement in 'Geng TR' at a seafood restaurant in Jeram, Selangor. Their case was transferred to the High Court last August, with the trial scheduled for October 2025. - Bernama
