Theft by drug addicts drives Kedah crime spike, says police chief
From January 1 to July 27, Kedah recorded 2,852 index crime cases, with nearly half linked to theft by drug users. 'Kedah police will maintain the focus outlined by former police chief Datuk Fisol Salleh, which is to eradicate drug-related crime,' Adzli said.
He stressed that addressing drug addiction could significantly reduce crime rates. 'We believe that if drug issues can be tackled and eliminated as much as possible, the overall index crime rate in Kedah can be brought down,' he added.
Adzli's remarks followed Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail's call for Kedah to intensify efforts against drug abuse. The minister had urged the state to exit the top four rankings for drug addiction during the 2025 National Anti-Drug Day celebration in Jitra last Friday.
Separately, Adzli assured that Kedah police are reinforcing border security despite the Thailand-Cambodia conflict being distant from Malaysia's northern border. 'Precautionary steps are being taken by strengthening security at Malaysia's border checkpoints,' he said.
He emphasized the need for vigilance, acknowledging support from agencies like the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency. 'We must not let our guard down. We are committed to ensuring the country's borders remain secure,' he stated.
Earlier, Adzli attended a ceremony marking his official appointment as Kedah police chief, promoted to Commissioner of Police. Perlis deputy police chief SAC Baderulhisham Baharudin was also appointed as Kedah's new deputy police chief, rising to Deputy Commissioner of Police. - Bernama

Over 400 tonnes of used batteries seized from unlicensed waste facility in Kedah
ALOR SETAR: The Kedah Environment Department has taken action against a factory in the Bukit Selambau Industrial Area, Sungai Petani, suspected of conducting unlicensed off-site scheduled waste storage and recovery activities. Its director Sharifah Zakian Syed Sahab said the action was taken during the "Ops Gempur" operation from 9am to 1pm on Tuesday (Aug 5), which revealed the facility was operating without Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval or a valid licence. "During the inspection, we found approximately 100 tonnes of used lithium batteries and around 317 tonnes of crushed used batteries, both classified as scheduled waste," she said in a statement on Tuesday. Additionally, about 20 tonnes of recovered metal powder were discovered on site. She said the department seized the factory's production equipment under Section 38(1)(a) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, as they were being operated without pollution control systems or department approval. Investigations are ongoing under Sections 18(1), 34A(6) and 34B(1) of the same Act. Sharifah Zakian said they would continue to strengthen monitoring and enforcement efforts, particularly targeting illegal waste processing activities that cause environmental pollution and pose public health risks. Blacklisted Filipinos turned back at Sabah port, airport within a week
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (MCBA) has thwarted an attempt by two Filipino nationals to enter Sabah illegally at two entry points within the span of a week. MCBA said the foreigners, a man and woman both aged 27, were stopped at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) after arriving from Manila, the Philippines, today. "Checks found that both had been denied entry at Sandakan Port on July 31 for failing to meet the entry requirements for foreign visitors to Malaysia. They were issued a Notice of Refusal of Entry (NPM) before being sent back," it said in a statement. MCBA said the pair were trying to enter Sabah through an air entry point after being refused at a sea route. "The reasons for refusal included the NPM issued by the Sandakan Port Immigration Office and their failure to meet the conditions of entry into Sabah," it said. Following document checks, the two were again issued an NPM and handed over to the airline for deportation to the Philippines. MCBA also said that surveillance and enforcement efforts would continue to be strengthened to combat human smuggling syndicates and the misuse of social visit pass facilities.
