Kedah farm animals free to move ahead of Aidiladha, except Ulu Melaka
The Ulu Melaka area remains a Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) control zone following an outbreak last month.
Kedah Veterinary Services Department director, Dr Shaharul Amar Talib said: "At present, there are no movement restrictions on farm animals throughout Kedah, except in the Ulu Melaka area in Langkawi."
However, the livestock movement ban in and out of Ulu Melaka, imposed on May 19, remains in place, he told NST.
Dr Shaharul said livestock movement restriction was being enforced in the area to prevent the disease from spreading and to keep other animals safe.
He urged farmers and animal suppliers to follow the rules, adding that if anyone needs to move animals in or out of that area, they must get official permission (a permit) first.
Last month, the department restricted livestock movement in and out of Ulu Melaka following an outbreak of FMD, a highly contagious viral infection that affected 37 head of cattle.
In preparation for the Aidiladha celebration, Dr Shaharul said the department has issued a total of 442 qurban (sacrificial livestock) movement permits.
"We expect this number to keep rising as Hari Raya Qurban approaches. The department will continue to closely monitor livestock movements to ensure smooth operations and a sufficient supply of sacrificial animals throughout the state," he said.

JOHANNESBURG, June 23 (Xinhua) -- South Africa has officially launched its foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccination drive, as outbreaks of the disease have been confirmed in four provinces of the country, said a senior government official on Monday. South African Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen on Monday visited one of the country's largest beef producer, Karan Beef, to oversee the vaccination of livestock in the company's feedlot in Heidelberg, near Johannesburg in Gauteng Province, where a FMD outbreak was confirmed earlier in June. "The first batch of 900,000 vaccines arrived in South Africa last week, and we commenced with the vaccination over the weekend," Steenhuisen told reporters during the oversight visit. "Obviously, there'll be a second batch on order, and we will continue to purchase vaccines in order to get this particular matter under control, not only here in Gauteng, but also in KwaZulu-Natal, where we have a major outbreak of FMD," he said. When asked to quantify losses associated with the FMD, Steenhuisen said losses were running in the "hundreds of millions." He confirmed that four provinces have been affected by the outbreaks, with KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng being the hardest hit, particularly northern KwaZulu-Natal. He also warned that individuals who fail to comply with the regulations, which cover the movement of livestock from disease management areas and the operation of auctions, will face criminal charges.

Tabung Kasih@HAWANA initiative has benefited 405 media practitioners
PUTRAJAYA: A total of 405 media practitioners nationwide have benefited from the Tabung Kasih@HAWANA initiative since its launch in conjunction with the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) in 2023. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said more media practitioners are being targeted for assistance in conjunction with the highlight of the HAWANA 2025 celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTC KL) on Saturday (June 14). 'We will assist not only more people but also those who had previously received the contribution. 'If there is anyone we need to reach out to and provide additional assistance, I will ask that this matter be looked into,' he said.
