
Nine months in, Starbucks CEO faces tall order in turnaround
Shares jumped more than 21% on August 13, the day Niccol was named CEO, on hopes he would inject the company with new vitality after several quarters of falling sales and pressure from activist investor Elliott Investment Management. But demand has not yet reversed, Niccol has not shared any financial targets, and the stock remains sluggish.
Niccol's "Back to Starbucks" initiative emphasizes a simplified menu, freshly baked goods, ceramic mugs with handwritten messages, and speedier service. "The experience of the coffeehouse defines our brand," Niccol told an audience of 14,000 store managers and leaders at a packed Las Vegas stadium in June. He said the company's previous removal of around 30,000 seats in stores as it prioritized mobile orders hurt the business and would be reversed.
Starbucks' global same-store sales declined 1% for the quarter ending March 30, the fifth straight quarterly contraction.
Analysis from research firm Placer.ai shows regular customers are coming in less often than before Niccol took over, said RJ Hottovy, head of analytical research. A Reuters review of the company's analysis derived from tens of millions of cell phone location points shows average monthly visits have declined in every month of 2025 compared to 2024.
The average customer visited 2.4 times in February, compared to 2.48 last February. Even a small decrease spread over millions of visitors is meaningful, Placer.ai said. 'You have to win that trust back,' Hottovy said. Starbucks did not comment on Placer.ai's analysis.
Niccol is accelerating staffing increases to all 11,000-plus Starbucks-owned North American stores by the end of the summer, rather than to just a third of U.S. stores, and he describes his changes as "cleaning up some things that have been done in the past while investing in what I think needs to happen,' he told Reuters in Las Vegas. 'The earnings results will follow.'
Staffing increases will vary by store, with details to be revealed at an investor day 'at some point in 2026."
The lack of clarity is making investors hesitant. Shares have stagnated since his August 13 appointment, while the broad-market S&P 500 is up 15%. The stock's forward price-to-earnings ratio is 33.2, a higher valuation than McDonald's (MCD.N), opens new tab or Yum Brands (YUM.N), opens new tab.
Dan Ahrens, chief executive at AdvisorShares, said his fund is currently avoiding Starbucks because of the uncertainty around the turnaround. "We're in a 'show-me' stage," he said.
When Niccol started on September 9, a narrow majority of analysts recommended buying Starbucks stock. Now, more recommend holding or selling. TD Cowen analyst Andrew Charles downgraded shares to 'hold" on May 29, expecting fiscal 2026 earnings to fall short of Wall Street's consensus.
"What the Street is trying to figure out is, what's the lift in sales I'm going to get from this?" he said.
Bernstein analysts said on July 2 that the staffing surge will cost $1.5 billion to $2 billion in the next two years, but it expects it to reduce turnover and improve same-store sales.
Greg Flynn, a restaurant franchisee whose company owns more than 300 Taco Bells, said Niccol 'gets the credit for turning that momentum forward with a relentless parade of new product innovations and exceptional advertising and promotion' as Taco Bell CEO from 2015 to 2018.
At Chipotle, same-store sales rose from 2.2% year-over-year in March 2018 when he took over to 31% roughly three years later.
Flynn said 'Back to Starbucks' follows that playbook. 'Figure out what people really loved about your brand from the beginning and embrace that,' he said. 'It takes discipline, it takes expenses, and it always meets a lot of opposition.'
There are critics in Starbucks' union, Starbucks Workers United, which represents workers at more than 600 locations.
Unionized baristas staged walk-outs at dozens of stores in June to protest new dress code restrictions Niccol introduced. Michelle Eisen, a 15-year Starbucks barista who now works for the union full-time, criticized moves such as requiring visitors to pay to use the restrooms or get water, 'neither of which promote a welcoming coffeehouse atmosphere.'
Starbucks said changes to its policies came out of discussions with employees and customers.
One notable Niccol fan? Former CEO Howard Schultz, who has a history of criticizing those who succeeded him. He physically embraced Niccol on stage in Las Vegas. 'I have never, in my entire life at Starbucks, been more optimistic than I am today,' he said.

Delta Air Lines is moving away from static prices towards individualized pricing decided by artificial intelligence, Fortune reports. The airline company wants to do away with static pricing altogether and instead charge customers based on the particular flight they want to take at a particular time. By the end of the year, the company wants to have 20 percent of all ticket prices individually determined by AI, Delta President Glen Hauenstein said. The airline is currently pricing about 3 percent of tickets with AI. Haustein said last year the company wants ticket costs to be informed by an AI 'super analyst' that can work 24/7 to determine what an individual passenger should pay at any given time, Fortune reports. The program is expected to take years to fully implement. Travel expert Gary Leff told Fortune this plan has been in the works for years: 'Personalized pricing has been an airline goal for the past decade and a half.' Not everyone is excited about the program. Some experts and lawmakers say this new program will be unfair to consumers and will raise ticket prices. Matt Britton, author of Generation AI, told Fortune that AI is 'fundamentally rewriting the rules of commerce and consumer experience.' 'For consumers, this means the era of 'fair' pricing is over,' he added. 'The price you see is the price the algorithm thinks you'll accept, not a universal rate.' Senator Ruben Gallego, a member of the Senate Subcommittee on Housing, Transportation, and Community Development, said he 'won't let [Delta] get away with this.' 'Delta's CEO just got caught bragging about using AI to find your pain point — meaning they'll squeeze you for every penny,' the Democrat wrote on X. 'This isn't fair pricing or competitive pricing. It's predatory pricing.' Justin Kloczko, an analyst with Consumer Watchdog, told Fortune that this means Delta wants to 'see into people's heads to see how much they're willing to pay.' 'They are basically hacking our brains,' he said. A Delta spokesperson told Fortune the company has 'zero tolerance for discrimination.' 'Our fares are publicly filed and based solely on trip-related factors like advance purchase and cabin class, and we maintain strict safeguards to ensure compliance with federal law,' the spokesperson said. Delta also announced the company is planning to reduce its main cabin capacity by about 1 percent to boost capacity for premium-level seats. Canada's Couche-Tard drops offer to buy Japanese 7-Eleven convenience stores
Canadian retail chain Alimentation Couche-Tard is dropping its proposal to acquire Seven & i Holdings Co., the Japanese operator of the 7-Eleven convenience store chain, citing frustration in ongoing negotiations that showed 'a lack of constructive engagement.' The 7-Eleven parent company rejected an offer last year, but Couche-Tard, which runs the global Circle K chain, was still interested and tried to coax a deal with the Japanese chain known here as 'conbini.' In a letter dated July 16 and sent to the Seven & i board, Couche-Tard stressed it had made a good offer earlier this year in a proposal of 2,600 yen ($17.50) per ordinary share in cash, which it said represented a 47.6% premium to the stock price. The initial offer, made last year, was for 2,200 yen ($14.86) per share in cash. In the letter, sent to media Thursday and signed by its two top executives, including founder Alain Bouchard, Couche-Tard expressed exasperation at the response it was getting from Seven & i, despite repeated attempts at dialogue. 'We have been very patient and respectful throughout this process, beginning with our meeting on July 23, 2024,' the letter said. 'You have engaged in a calculated campaign of obfuscation and delay, to the great detriment of 7 & i and its shareholders. We believe this approach reinforces our concerns about your approach to governance. Based on this persistent lack of good faith engagement, we are withdrawing our proposal.' Couche-Tard, which runs nearly 17,000 stores in more than 30 countries and territories, including the U.S., said the documents it got lacked key information, executives were no-shows at meetings, and the meetings it did have ended up being 'readouts' of statements, not frank discussions. Seven & i acknowledged the dropped offer Thursday and said it considered talks 'in good faith and constructively.' 'We remain fully committed to our standalone value creation plan, which we have been pursing in parallel, and to unlocking the value of our businesses, including our North American convenience store business. Our plan is concrete and actionable,' it said in a statement. Some analysts say Seven & i's management has not fully leveraged the business' global potential or delivered enough value to shareholders, and could use better marketing, although its bottom line is unlikely to be affected by U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff policies. The 7-Eleven franchise, which spans more than 85,000 stores in Japan, the U.S. and Europe, has a new chief executive, Stephen Hayes Dacus, the first foreigner tapped to head 7-Eleven. Dacus, an American with a Japanese mother who has experience at Walmart and Uniqlo, has promised a leaner business by focusing on the supply chain and tailoring shop offerings to various regions. Top economist at anti-Trump newspaper admits he is winning the trade war - and slams cruel nickname media gave him
The Wall Street Journal's chief economics correspondent has delivered a surprise assessment of President Donald Trump 's trade policies while criticizing the cruel nickname assigned to him after he 'chickened out' of imposing extreme tariffs. Greg Ip published his latest take on Trump's tariff wars in the publication on Tuesday, sensationally noting Trump is ' winning' on trade policy. 'Trump has, by his own definition of success, already won his trade war,' Ip wrote, 'even without [the] deals' he vowed to reach with foreign allies. Trump faced harsh criticism for backing down on his 'Liberation Day' tariffs, earning him the moniker 'TACO' for 'Trump Always Chickens Out.' After threatening extraordinary reciprocal tariffs on most countries, markets crashed and doomsday economists feared a recession was inevitable. In the midst of the backlash, Trump walked back on the tariffs, instead offering countries 90 days to reach new agreements with his administration. Some within his inner circle were boasting of the possibility of achieving 90 deals in 90 days. That deadline has since passed, and Trump has inked one deal with the UK, and two more are on track with Vietnam and Indonesia. But Ip notes this is not necessarily a negative for Trump. To the contrary, Ip said Trump's behavior leading to this point suggests he was never particularly keen on making such deals to begin with. 'This narrative misconstrues Trump's goals, overstates the importance of deals and breeds complacency about his willingness to raise tariffs,' Ip wrote. When Trump backed down on his steep tariffs, markets rallied and economists breathed a sigh of relief. But he never removed the 10 percent baseline tariff which he had initially imposed on all goods coming into the United States. On the campaign trail, Ip notes, a 10 percent tariff seemed like worst-case scenario for markets. Now, in the face of Trump's brash actions and threats of tariffs as high as 145 percent (on China), the 10 percent tariff appears to have flown under the radar, now considered the best-case outcome for nations coming to the negotiating table. In June alone, Treasury pocketed $27billion in customs revenue - $20billion more than it did in the same month last year. With higher tariffs on steel and aluminum, the average tariff for all goods coming into the United States as of July 2 was 13.4 percent. Last year, it was 2.3 percent. Ip argues in his piece that Trump has no major need to forge new trade deals, because doing so would imply backing down or compromising on something he wants - which isn't often the Trump way. But while he said Trump is winning the trade war he created, Ip noted local manufacturing has not skyrocketed as Trump had hoped it would. Consumers in America are also increasingly feeling the pinch as businesses up their prices to accommodate the tariffs they're now paying on imported goods. Ip concluded: 'Trump might emerge a winner from his trade wars; it remains to be seen if the U.S. will as well.' Ip's assessment of Trump's trade policy may ruffle feathers at the publication, which has drawn Trump's ire a number of times during this administration. In May, he gave a reporter from the publication a verbal lashing after asking a question on board Air Force 1. 'Boy, you people treat us so badly,' he said of the paper Murdoch acquired in 2007. 'Wall Street Journal has truly gone to hell... Rotten newspaper. You hear me? What I said? It's a rotten newspaper.' Months earlier, he panned it as a 'globalist' rag and 'polluted' after it criticized his tariffs. In March, the paper sensationally suggested 'someone should sue' over the tariffs and said: 'He's treating the North American economy as a personal plaything, as markets gyrate with each presidential whim.'
