It's not just Novak Djokovic. Marin Cilic and other 30-somethings make their mark at Wimbledon

LONDON (AP) — After wrapping up a straight-set win on Centre Court, Novak Djokovic ran into another 38-year-old in the Wimbledon locker room.
Gael Monfils, who was born about eight months before Djokovic and is the only player in the men's draw who's older, was waiting for the start of his second-round match.
'He kind of smiled at me and said, 'Good day in the office,'' Djokovic recounted. 'At this age, he said, we need those types of days.'
Thursday was certainly a good day for the old guard at Wimbledon.
At a time when the new generation — led by Carlos Alcaraz, 22, and Jannik Sinner, 23 — is starting to take over, there will be six men in the third round who are 33 or older. (Monfils' match against Marton Fucsovics, 33, was suspended because of darkness Thursday and will be completed Friday).
On Thursday, Djokovic beat 35-year-old Dan Evans; the 34-year-old Gregor Dimitrov ousted Corentin Moutet; 35-year-old Jan-Lennard Struff finished off a win over Felix Auger-Aliassime in a match that had been suspended on Wednesday; and 36-year-old Marin Cilic beat British No. 4 seed Jack Draper, who's 23. The 37-year-old Adrian Mannarino advanced Wednesday.
And, as Struff pointed out, those turn-back-the-clock performances came after yet another 38-year-old, Fabio Fognini, pushed two-time defending champion Alcaraz to five sets in the first round.
'It's amazing,' said Struff, who faces Alcaraz on Centre Court on Friday. 'You see a lot of older players playing good tennis. So that motivates me, as well, to keep going.'
Cilic, the 2014 U.S. Open champion and twice a major runner-up elsewhere, is coming back to top-level tennis after having two knee operations and then playing in lower-level Challenger Tour events this year to boost his ranking. He had to make it through qualifying rounds just to get into the bracket at the French Open, where he lost in the first round.
He's making his first Wimbledon appearance since 2021, and is pleased see some players his own age still around.
'It's great to see them playing, continuing to play well," Cilic said, "and using this experience to play great in Grand Slams.'
The older guys, it seems, often stick together behind the scenes.
'All of us, we have tremendous respect for each other," Dimitrov said. "We do these things, little gather-ups when we're having lunch, and even in the locker rooms. The funniest thing is, it takes us a lot more time to prepare. Sometimes you have to prepare an hour and a half for a 30-minute hit.'
Being one of the veterans on tour also makes it easier to appreciate life as a tennis player, Dimitrov said. But he acknowledged that some other things were better when he was younger.
'Would I like to have things … a little bit easier on the body? Yes,' he said. "But at this point, being able to compete against the guys, winning matches still, giving a hard time to the best players — that's one reason to keep on playing.'

Wimbledon: Naomi Osaka loses to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the 3rd round

LONDON (AP) — Naomi Osaka might be more comfortable on grass courts these days but she will once again leave Wimbledon in the third round after a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 loss to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Friday. Osaka is a former No. 1 now ranked 50th and a four-time Grand Slam champion, all on hard courts — she won the U.S. Open and Australian Open twice apiece. Osaka arrived at the All England Club this year having lost three of her last four matches at the place and with a career record of 5-4 there. Her best showing was getting to the third round in 2017 and 2018; she missed the tournament in 2021, 2022 and 2023. From 4-all in the third set, Pavluchenkova grabbed eight of the match's last 10 points, holding at love, then breaking in the final game with the help of a trio of forehand unforced errors by Osaka. 'A majority of you were cheering for Naomi, but that's OK,' Pavlyuchenkova, who turned 34 on Thursday, told the crowd at Court No. 2. 'I'm mentally tough, so that didn't bother me at all. The opposite: It gave me energy.' Pavlyuchenkova, who is ranked 53rd, was the 2021 runner-up at the French Open, and Friday's victory moved her into the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time since she was a quarterfinalist nine years ago.

Smith hits 80-ball century as England counterattacks to 249-5 against India in 2nd test

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Mohammed Siraj removed Joe Root and Ben Stokes in successive balls before England counterattacked through Harry Brook and century-maker Jamie Smith to reach 249-5 at lunch on Day 3 of the second test against India on Friday. England trailed by 338 runs in response to India's 587 all out but Brook (91) and Smith (102) were set on a good pitch at Edgbaston, with their partnership up to 165. Behind 1-0 in the five-match series, India looked like steamrolling England after reducing the home team to 84-5 thanks to Siraj's double on the second over of the day. The pacer dismissed England's best batter — Root (22) — by enticing a nick down the leg side, with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant taking a diving catch. Stokes arrived in the middle but was soon slowly walking back to the dressing room after a steeply rising and seaming delivery from Siraj came off the shoulder of the England captain's bat and flashed to Pant. England was rocked but Smith played as if there was no pressure, smashing three sixes as well as 14 fours — the last of which came in the final over before lunch and brought up his second test century. It came off just 80 balls, making it the third fastest by an English player. England was going at 6.37 runs an over and was racing toward an initial target of 388 — the score needed to avoid the follow-on. Brook, who resumed with Root with England 77-3, was more circumspect but had still hit 11 fours and a six in a 127-ball knock. England won the first test at Headingley. ___
