One held for selling foreign fags; stocks worth Rs 7L seized in city
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Commissioner's Task Force, Central Zone Team, along with Afzalgunj Police, conducted a raid at Gowliguda and apprehended a person involved in illegal import and sale of foreign cigarettes worth Rs 7.05 lakh.
The Police on Tuesday conducted a raid at Gowliguda (back side of the Bus Depot) and arrested Manohar Singh (27). According to police, he was found to be illegally importing foreign cigarettes at a low price from Delhi to Hyderabad through private transport services.
Police said Manohar was storing the contraband at his residential premises and selling it at higher rates to pan shops, kirana stores, and petty vendors across the city, thereby earning illegal profits.
'Without any valid tax invoices, he was purchasing various brands of foreign cigarettes at a low cost and transporting them to Hyderabad via private road transport services,' said YVS Sudheendra, DCP Task Force.
The DCP said that upon arrival, he stored the cigarette cartons at his residence and sold them at inflated prices to local shopkeepers and vendors. The illegal sale of these foreign cigarettes, which do not carry the mandatory statutory health warnings, not only violates COTPA (Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act) but also evades government taxes imposed to discourage tobacco consumption.
As per COTPA regulations, it is mandatory for cigarette packets to display graphic health warnings covering 85% of the packaging space. However, these illegally imported foreign brands do not comply with the packaging and labelling requirements set by the Government of India.
The accused, along with the seized contraband worth Rs 7,05,000 has been handed over to the Afzalgunj Police for further investigation and necessary legal action.

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday alleged that admission of students through the management quota in three Bengaluru-based private colleges was being done in an 'opaque' manner using money, including funds in cash. The federal probe agency's statement comes after they conducted searches at 17 locations on June 25-26 in a 'seat blocking scam' case. The raids were carried out at the premises of BMS College of Engineering, Akash Institute of Engineering and Technology, and New Horizon College of Engineering, along with those associated with these institutions, the agency said in a statement. A few entities engaged in educational consultancy services and some private agents were also raided. The ED case stems from a Karnataka Police FIR registered by the KEA (Karnataka Examination Authority) against these colleges. The complaint alleged that these colleges colluded with unknown individuals to acquire the login credentials of students registered with the KEA and subsequently blocked seats in their name for students who did not intend to enroll, the ED said. The searches revealed 'evidence' of 'widespread' seat blocking and the use of cash/money in the admission process for popular professional courses in the private institutes, it said. 'There is an extensive network of agents, educational consultancy service entities, which is used to bring students for admission from across India to these institutes,' the statement said. The agency further alleged that the admission for management quota seats was mostly done in an opaque manner based on extraneous considerations such as cash or money. During the searches, a total of Rs 1.37 crore in cash was allegedly seized. However, the ED did not specify the source of the recovered funds. The colleges or their promoters could not be contacted for a comment on the ED charges made against them.

4 women among 5 held for ‘involvement' in Chandigarh house theft, stolen items recovered
The Chandigarh Police has arrested five people, including four women, allegedly involved in a house theft and have recovered the stolen items. The case was registered on June 24 at Sector 39 police station, Chandigarh, following a complaint by Ashutosh Sharma, a resident of Zirakpur. He reported a theft at his brother's place, House No. 120, Sector 38A, Chandigarh. As per the complaint, items stolen from the house included Rs 23,000 in cash, six mobile phones, mobile earbuds, two cameras, three branded wristwatches, one trimmer, a power bank, various jewellery items, and a black bag. Acting on a tip-off, the police apprehended Nazim, alias Arman, a 25-year-old resident of Small Flats, Dhanas, on June 25. During his arrest, the police recovered Rs 10,000 in cash, a Kotak 35mm camera with cover, four stolen mobile phones, one trimmer, iPhone earbuds, and a pouch containing gold- and silver-like jewellery. During interrogation, Nazim said that he was a drug addict and used to search for unoccupied or vacated homes to commit theft. To sustain his drug addiction, he would sell stolen items to local women in exchange for heroin. Based on the information provided by Nazim during police remand on June 27, four women were identified as his co-accused and were arrested from Sector 38, Chandigarh. These included Maya, Meenu, Roopa, and Jinna. The police recovered stolen items from these accused, including two mobile phones, one camera, three wristwatches, and one mobile power bank. Police said that Nazim was previously involved in a theft case registered at Sarangpur police station in 2024. Maya has a past record under the NDPS Act from 2017. Meenu, too, has been previously booked under NDPS-related charges in 2022 and 2025. Roopa was involved in a serious case registered in 2024 under multiple sections of the BNS including 121(1), 132, 226, and 3(5). Jinna did not have a previous record mentioned but was found in possession of one wristwatch and a mobile power bank linked to the stolen property. According to police, the modus operandi involved Nazim identifying and breaking into houses that were temporarily unoccupied. He would then exchange the stolen goods for heroin with the co-accused women who were known to him and active in the area. All the arrested individuals have now been sent to judicial custody. The investigation is ongoing, and more arrests or recoveries may follow, said the police.

Three women on way to Puri crushed to death by OSRTC bus
Police said the OSRTC bus with passengers on board was also en route to Puri. Though the driver fled after the incident, he was nabbed by the cops after a few hours. 'Pipili police have registered a case and detained the bus driver besides seizing the vehicle. Efforts are on to identify the erring two-wheeler rider who was driving on the wrong side of the road,' said a senior police officer. As per information, Rimjhim's aunt and mother were also travelling on another two-wheeler when the mishap occurred. Sources said Rimjhim and Elina were studying together at Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Bhubaneswar. Elina and Kajal were cousins and natives of Kendrapara district. The duo was staying on rent at Rimjhim's house in Old Town's Barik Sahi area. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed grief over the accident. He took to X to pay his condolences and announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the deceased. The accident comes at a time when Odisha Police boasted to have covered the entire stretch from Uttara to Puri with AI-enabled CCTV cameras to regulate traffic during the chariot festival.
