One held for selling foreign fags; stocks worth Rs 7L seized in city

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Commissioner's Task Force, Central Zone Team, along with Afzalgunj Police, conducted a raid at Gowliguda and apprehended a person involved in illegal import and sale of foreign cigarettes worth Rs 7.05 lakh. The Police on Tuesday conducted a raid at Gowliguda (back side of the Bus Depot) and arrested Manohar Singh (27). According to police, he was found to be illegally importing foreign cigarettes at a low price from Delhi to Hyderabad through private transport services. Police said Manohar was storing the contraband at his residential premises and selling it at higher rates to pan shops, kirana stores, and petty vendors across the city, thereby earning illegal profits. 'Without any valid tax invoices, he was purchasing various brands of foreign cigarettes at a low cost and transporting them to Hyderabad via private road transport services,' said YVS Sudheendra, DCP Task Force. The DCP said that upon arrival, he stored the cigarette cartons at his residence and sold them at inflated prices to local shopkeepers and vendors. The illegal sale of these foreign cigarettes, which do not carry the mandatory statutory health warnings, not only violates COTPA (Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act) but also evades government taxes imposed to discourage tobacco consumption. As per COTPA regulations, it is mandatory for cigarette packets to display graphic health warnings covering 85% of the packaging space. However, these illegally imported foreign brands do not comply with the packaging and labelling requirements set by the Government of India. The accused, along with the seized contraband worth Rs 7,05,000 has been handed over to the Afzalgunj Police for further investigation and necessary legal action.

AP govt pushes for shift to fine rice cultivation

1 2 Vijayawada: State govt is taking concrete steps to encourage farmers to shift from cultivating thick rice to fine rice varieties in the upcoming kharif season. Although a majority of people in the state prefer fine rice for daily consumption, nearly 95% of the farmers continue to grow thick rice, which is not suitable for local use and is mostly exported to neighboring states for rice rava and idli rava production. To address the mismatch between consumption and cultivation, civil supplies minister Nadendla Manohar has initiated a special awareness and support programme to promote the cultivation of fine rice. He emphasised the importance of aligning farming practices with consumer demand to ensure better profitability for farmers and reduce dependency on imports of fine rice. Speaking at a meeting with the rice millers association held at the civil supplies office in Kanuru, Vijayawada, Manohar urged rice millers to take active role in this transformation. "Millers should encourage farmers to grow fine rice and work together in the interest of both agriculture and consumers," he said, adding, "We must protect farmers' interests while also maintaining the state's food standards." The minister added that promoting fine rice will not only fulfill domestic needs but also open up export opportunities, benefitting the farming sector in the long run. The civil supplies department will coordinate closely with millers and farmers to roll out this initiative effectively in time for the next agricultural season. Meanwhile, the agriculture department is also‌ initiating measures to promote the cultivation of fine varieties like Sona Masuri, Samba Masuri and others. Agriculture authorities said that there is a huge demand for the super fine paddy seed in the market. Infographic Highlights: FINE RICE IN DEMAND 95% of AP farmers grow thick rice despite demand for fine rice Thick rice mostly used for rava, not preferred for daily meals Civil supplies dept pushed fine rice cultivation programme Minister Manohar met rice millers to seek cooperation Goal to align cultivation with consumer demand & export prospects

Singapore trip: Travel agent accused of fraud tries to end life as cops serve notice

Bengaluru: A travel agent, accused of duping a group of gram panchayat members of over Rs 19 lakh by promising to arrange their trip to Singapore, allegedly attempted to end his life when police officers went to serve him notice. The group had lodged a cheating case with police on June 5 stating they were stranded in Singapore as Manohar, the proprietor of 99 Tours, had not kept his promise of making the travel arrangement despite collecting the money. Manohar's alleged suicide attempt occurred on June 15, after head constable Praveen V of Magadi Road police station tried to deliver a summons to his office at Invenu Global Gateway, located near Bashyam Circle, Rajajinagar. According to a complaint filed with Basaveshwaranagar police, Praveen first visited Manohar's office but found it locked. He then proceeded to Manohar's home at Kirloskar Colony. On being handed the notice, Manohar allegedly refused to accept it, verbally abused the constable, and threatened him saying he would get the officer fired from his job. Following this, Praveen alerted his senior officers. A police sub-inspector and assistant sub-inspector Kumar KR arrived at the spot. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Manohar once again refused to cooperate and allegedly threatened the officers. In the presence of police, he consumed a bottle of floor cleaner, claiming he would kill himself. He was rushed to a nearby hospital from where he was discharged on the same day. Based on the constable's complaint, Basaveshwaranagar police registered a fresh FIR under the BNS Sections 226 (attempt to commit suicide to compel or restrain exercise of lawful power) and 351 (criminal intimidation). The original cheating case against Manohar had been filed by Rahul Gowda, president of the Yentaganahalli gram panchayat. Gowda alleged that Manohar collected Rs 24.3 lakh from 28 individuals, including panchayat members and their families, for a six-night, seven-day tour to Singapore and Malaysia. Each person was charged Rs 86,750, which was paid between March and April. Initially, Manohar said the trip was scheduled for April 16, but later postponed it to May 8, citing unspecified problems. When the group arrived at Kempegowda International Airport on the new date, Manohar backed out, telling them his associates would receive them in Singapore. However, no arrangements had been made, and no one turned up to receive them. The group was left stranded in Singapore and had to make their own arrangements by paying extra through another contact. Upon their return, Gowda and others lodged a complaint alleging that Manohar had cheated them of Rs 19.2 lakh — the extra amount they had to spend during their trip. In his defence, Manohar told TOI flight charges had increased unexpectedly, and he had no intention of cheating anyone. He said he was seeking time to return the money. "My friend is responsible for the allegations against me. I will be filing a complaint against him," he said. The attempt to evade legal action by consuming poison has now placed Manohar under legal scrutiny for a second offence.

Elderly must get supplies in last week of every month: Min Nadendla Manohar

Vijayawada: Civil supplies minister Nadendla Manohar directed the civil supplies department officials to take steps to distribute essential commodities to elderly people aged above 65 years and differently-abled BPL cardholders at their doorsteps between 25th and 30th of every month. This distribution should occur before the start of essential commodities distribution under the PDS system for the ensuing month in the state. He asked the ration dealers to take the initiative to door deliver essential commodities to the elderly and differently-abled beneficiaries living in agency, tribal, and hilly regions. On Friday, Manohar held a meeting with the ration dealers' representatives at the Civil Supplies Bhavan in Vijayawada. Addressing the ration dealers on the occasion, the civil supplies minister said that it was a record of sorts that govt achieved 89.6% essential commodities distribution within 15 days of the commencement of the PDS distribution on June 1 in the state. He said that the essential commodities were distributed to a total of 1.3 crore cardholders out of 1.5 crore cardholders in the state. Manohar further pointed out that govt successfully door delivered the essential commodities to 13.1 lakh elderly and differently-abled cardholders, achieving an 83% delivery rate in the first 15 days of the month.
