Indian Men's Hockey Team To Play Prep Matches In Australia For Asia Cup

Last Updated: The Indian men's hockey team will tour Australia for a four-match series in Perth from August 15-21, preparing for the Asia Cup in Rajgir, Bihar from August 29 to September 7. As part of their preparations for the upcoming Asia Cup, the Indian men's hockey team is all set to tour Australia for a friendly four-match series in Perth from August 15 to 21. Ranked eighth in the world, the Indian team will face off against the sixth-ranked Australian hosts on August 15, 16, 19, and 21 at the same venue. The Asia Cup is scheduled to take place in Rajgir, Bihar from August 29 to September 7. The continental event offers a direct qualification spot for next year's FIH World Cup to the tournament winner. 'This tour comes at a crucial time for us, just ahead of the Hero Asia Cup in Bihar. While these are technically friendly matches, they form a very important part of our preparation phase," stated India chief coach Craig Fulton in a statement released by Hockey India. 'Playing against a team like Australia will test us in all aspects – both on the ball and off it – and that is exactly what we need to sharpen up before a major tournament," he added. Fulton mentioned that the team has recently completed a 10-day training block. '…the mood in the camp is upbeat as we are fully focused on what lies ahead. One of our key goals on this tour is to use the first two matches for selection purposes, while the remaining games will be played with the shortlisted squad for the Asia Cup," he said. 'Our focus is firmly on moving forward — the goal now is to prepare well and go to the Asia Cup with the intent to win it," he concluded. The two teams recently clashed in the FIH Pro League in Europe, where Australia narrowly defeated India 3–2 in both legs. India had managed to secure a 3–2 victory over the Kookaburras at last year's Paris Olympics — their first Olympic win over Australia since the 1972 Munich Games. While recent encounters have been closely fought, Australia have historically dominated this rivalry, winning 35 of the 51 matches played between the two teams since 2013. India have emerged victorious nine times, with seven matches ending in draws. A photo that has gone viral on social media shows an emotional Karun Nair in tears, with star cricketer and childhood friend KL Rahul seen consoling him—capturing the raw emotion of a tough moment in the cricketer's journey. Nair's return began on a disappointing note. In the opening Test at Headingley, he was dismissed for a duck in the first innings and made just 20 in the second. He was retained for the second Test, where he scored 31 and 26. In the third Test, he showed glimpses of form with a 40-run knock in the first innings, but could only manage 14 in the second. Shardul Thakur opens up on being under bowled, gives inside details on Rishabh Pant With his place under scrutiny, India captain Shubman Gill made the call to leave him out for the fourth Test. Three changes were made to the playing XI. Anshul Kamboj was handed a Test debut, while Sai Sudharsan and Shardul Thakur were also included. Sudharsan replaced Karun, and Shardul came in for Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was ruled out due to a left knee injury. Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif criticised Gill for not backing Nair at a crucial juncture. 'Today was Shubman Gill's chance to back Karun who was down but deserved one more chance. He should have picked Karun Nair. Chance missed to earn the respect when it comes to making tough decisions as a leader,' Kaif posted on X. Ponting questions India's bowling tactics, Vaughan says visitors need 'Virat mentality' to survive: 'They've been off'

Ricky Ponting did not held back as he criticised India's bowling plans against England on Day 2 of the 4th Test at Manchester, while Michael Vaughan said another bad day can spell doom for Shubman Gill and Co. read more Ricky Ponting and Michael Vaughan did not find many positives from India's performance on Day 2 of fourth Test vs England. Images: Reuters/PTI Former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting ripped into Shubman Gill's plans as England openers put up a 166-run stand in no time against India on Day 2 of the fourth Test at Manchester on Thursday. Meanwhile, former England captain Michael Vaughan has said India will need the 'Virat mentality' to make a comeback in the Test match. After scoring a respectable 358 in the first innings, India were let down by their bowlers as England ended Day 2 on 225/2 from just 46 overs and trail India by only 133 runs. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett gave England a blistering start as India's strategy to make debutant Anshul Kamboj bowl from the start backfired. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Ponting slams 'tactically wrong' India Ponting did not mince his words as he criticised India's field placements and bowling sections after a chastening day for the pacers. 'They got scored off on both sides of the wicket, didn't they?' Ponting said on Sky Sports. 'I think they were tactically off as well. I don't think Kamboj should have taken the new ball. I didn't like that from the start.' Also read | Zak Crawley hits back at Shubman Gill's allegations, says he enjoyed the on-field spat Ponting pointed out how Gill got the basics wrong while bowling Jasprit Bumrah from the wrong end. 'They were tactically wrong there,' Ponting added. 'Even watching now, Bumrah is bowling from the wrong end. Most of the wickets have fallen from the Statham End, and he's done most of his work from the Anderson End. They were off execution-wise and tactically they've been off as well.' Vaughan says India need 'Virat mentality' to survive Vaughan in a separate conversation with Dinesh Karthik on Cricbuzz stated that the ongoing India-England Test series, in which the visitors are 2-1 down, will be decided on Day 3 in Manchester and India will need to have an aggressive 'Virat mentality' to bring themselves back in ascendancy otherwise the series as good as done for them despite the last Test still to come. Also read | Shastri tears into Indian bowling unit for 'rubbish' display 'The series will be decided on Day Three. If England have a great day, I think they're winning this Test match and that's the series done and dusted,' he said. 'India and Shubman have to arrive on Day Three with that Virat mentality. We have to win the day. If they win tomorrow, the game is alive. If they lose, the series is gone.' Karthik agreed with Vaughan as he said: 'Those are big words and I think it's a very fair observation as well. Because walking into day three, as they call it, the moving day, you would almost think the series hangs in the balance on that day. If India wants to stay alive, they need to have a good day with the ball.'
