Chevy's Silverado EV ZR2 blasts into off-road racing at Mint 400

Yahoo06-03-2025
Chevrolet is pushing electric technology to new extremes with its Silverado EV ZR2, an innovative off-road racing concept that's set to compete in the challenging Mint 400 desert race. This move marks an important step forward in proving the practicality and performance potential of electric trucks in demanding off-road conditions.
The Silverado EV ZR2 joins Chevy's established off-road racing team, Hall Racing, led by veteran driver Chad Hall. Hall Racing, recognized for its successes with the Silverado ZR2 and Colorado ZR2, is helping Chevrolet test the performance and durability of electric propulsion under real-world racing conditions. At the core of the Silverado EV ZR2's off-road capabilities are Multimatic adaptive spool valve (ASV) dampers. These advanced dampers precisely control suspension movements by adjusting fluid flow, significantly improving ride comfort, stability, and handling in challenging environments.
With more than 13 inches of front and rear suspension travel, the Silverado EV ZR2 maintains excellent wheel articulation, critical for keeping tire contact with the ground over rugged terrain. It also rides on 37-inch BF Goodrich KM3 Mud-Terrain tires, designed specifically to handle rough surfaces with reinforced sidewalls and deep tread patterns for excellent traction.
Powering the Silverado EV ZR2 is an advanced tri-motor electric setup delivering a remarkable 1,100 horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. The standard dual-motor Silverado EV, offers up 754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque. Regardless, electric vehicle characteristic are particularly advantageous in off-road racing, where instant responsiveness and precise power control can determine competitive success.Past racing experiences have directly influenced Chevy's consumer trucks, leading to better suspension tuning, greater durability, and stronger protective components like skid plates.
Chad Hall notes, "Working directly with Chevy engineers always results in real-world improvements." Hall Racing's remarkable track record, completing 53 out of 54 races since teaming up with Chevrolet in 2017, highlights the reliability and effectiveness of these racing-driven developments.
As the Silverado EV ZR2 competes at the Mint 400, Chevrolet is simultaneously preparing the Silverado EV Trail Boss for off-road enthusiasts. This consumer-oriented truck will feature practical enhancements such as 18-inch wheels, durable 35-inch all-terrain tires, and a unique Terrain Mode designed to optimize handling and performance on various surfaces.
More details on the Silverado EV Trail Boss are expected soon, reinforcing Chevrolet's commitment to bringing competition-tested technology to its consumer lineup.

Corvette silenced in Europe — at least at start

General Motors' big, brash Corvette has been silenced in Europe for the first time — at least up to the first 70 kph (44 mph). The Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray hybrid launched in Europe with a 'stealth' mode that allows it to start on electric power for silent getaways. 'It's good for neighbor relations when you leave early in the morning,' GM Europe President Pere Brugal said at the supercar's launch at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 10. The new model adds a 162-hp electric motor on the front axle mated to a 1.9-kilowatt-hour battery to create the first all-wheel-drive Corvette. Sign up for the Automotive News Europe Focus on Electrification newsletter, a weekly wrap-up of the latest electric vehicle news, including interviews and global EV sales data. Overall power is 644 hp and the 0 to 100 kph time is 2.9 seconds, making the E-Ray the quickest production Corvette available in Europe. The price in the U.K. is £153,440 ($206,000) for the coupe variant, undercutting the Z06 but far above the standard V-8 model at £92,890. Both coupe and convertible versions of the E-Ray will be sold across Chevrolet's 18 European markets. The hybrid technology gives the U.S. automaker an answer to the increasing number of electrified supercars from European rivals. 'We think the timing is perfect,' Brugal said. 'The hybrid supercar market is experiencing huge growth.' Half of the models sold in Europe's exotic segment were plug-in hybrids in the first six months of the year, marking 49 percent growth for PHEVs, preliminary figures from market researcher Dataforce show. Some were SUVs, topped by the BMW XM, but electrified supercars also include the segment's No. 4 seller, the Ferrari 296 GTS, as well as the Ferrari SF90, Lamborghini Revuelto and McLaren Artura. Lamborghini's new Temerario, a replacement for the Huracan, will also be a PHEV. The E-Ray is a hybrid rather than a PHEV, but the model will also compete with the new Porsche 911 GTS T-Hybrid. Like the E-Ray, the 911 hybrid will have a 1.9-kWh battery pack. The Corvette was GM's bestselling car in Europe in the first half of the year, with volume of 338 — 39 sales ahead of the Cadillac Lyriq full-electric SUV, according to Dataforce figures. No other models have so far been offered by Cadillac in its launch markets of France, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden. More markets and models are coming, but Cadillac is in no rush to announce them. 'We're not here to push metal,' Brugal said. GM returned to Europe in 2024 with Cadillac after exiting the market in 2017 with the sale of its Opel and Vauxhall subsidiaries to PSA Group. Opel and Vauxhall are now part of Stellantis. Premium rivals to BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz — along with JLR and Volvo — have found it difficult to gain traction in Europe, but Brugal insists that customers will be lured to Cadillac by the combination of design, brand awareness and technology. Cadillac has yet to offer its Super Cruise hands-off, eyes-on semi-autonomous driving system in Europe, but that will change next year, Brugal said. GM has a fleet of vehicles testing Super Cruise on Europe's major highways with the aim of following Ford, which already offers its similar BlueCruise system in certain models, including the Mustang Mach-E full-electric SUV. Last year, Ford said it won permission to offer BlueCruise in 15 European Union countries over 133,000 kilometers (82,744 miles) of Blue Zones.

Rex White, 1960 NASCAR Champion Driver, Dies at 95

Rex White, the oldest surviving NASCAR champion, who grew up in the rural Southeast where souped-up cars loaded with illegal moonshine were part of the stock-car racing circuit's origin story, died on July 18 in Taylorsville, N.C. He was 95. His niece Kay Baron said that he died in hospice care at her home, where he had been living for a few years. White started competing in the Grand National Series (now the NASCAR Cup Series) in 1956 and won two races in the 1958 season. The next year, he won five more. In 1960, he had six triumphs in his No. 4 Chevrolet. In one of them, at the Old Dominion 500 at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia, he was challenged in the last 30 laps by Joe Weatherly. 'We bumped and banged around the track, exchanging so much paint I thought my car's gold color had changed,' White recalled in 'Gold Thunder: Autobiography of a NASCAR Champion' (2005, with Anne B. Jones). White accumulated enough points throughout the season to take the 1960 Grand National Series championship. He raced strongly and efficiently: In 35 of 40 races, he finished in the top 10, including 25 times in the top five. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
