Mamata launches ‘language movement', condemns targeting of migrant's family in Delhi

The Hindu4 days ago
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the targeting of a migrant's family in Delhi on the day her party launched a 'language movement' to protest against the targeting of migrants from the State in BJP-ruled States.
'Atrocious!! Terrible!! See how Delhi police brutally beat up a kid and his mother, members of a migrant family from Malda's Chanchal. See how even a child is not spared from the cruelty of violence in the regime of linguistic terror unleashed by BJP in the country against Bengalis! ,' the Chief Minister said on social media. Ms. Banerjee wanted to know, 'where are they [BJP led government] taking the country now?'
On Sunday (July 27, 2025), protest marches were organised across the State in line with plans announced by the Trinamool Congress chairperson. Ms. Banerjee had on July 21, at a Martyrs Day rally, announced the start of a 'language movement' against the targeting of migrants in the BJP-ruled States. The Chief Minister had called for protests every weekend till the next year's Assembly polls.
Language movement
From the streets of Kolkata to districts across the State, hundreds of people participated in the protests which the Trinamool has described as a 'language movement.' Some protesters also held posters highlighting the Bengali alphabet implying that BJP-ruled States are targeting migrants for speaking in Bengali.
Migrants from West Bengal have been detained in different States like Odisha, Haryana and Delhi on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals. Some migrants from West Bengal have also been pushed into Bangladesh. The Trinamool Congress chairperson has claimed that there is a directive issued by Ministry of Home Affairs to detain migrants and so far about 1,000 workers from the State has been detained in BJP ruled states.
Along with the protests against migrants the Trinamool Congress has also raised concerns about the possibility of a SIR (Special Incentive Revision).
'The protest against SIR isn't just a reaction, it's a rejection of @BJP4India's plan to introduce the NRC through the backdoor! BJP is targeting poor, marginalised citizens with illegal notices, beyond their jurisdiction. It's a calculated attack on Bengal's identity, a violation of constitutional rights, and a war on the powerless,' the Trinamool Congress tweeted from its official handle, adding, 'We will defend every voice they're trying to erase!'

Big Shift Ahead Of Tamil Nadu Polls: O. Panneerselvam Meets CM MK Stalin Hours After Leaving NDA

In a major political shift, former Tamil Nadu CM O Panneerselvam (OPS) met Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in Chennai, with Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin also present. The meeting came just hours before OPS's faction announced its decision to exit the BJP-led NDA alliance. Senior leader Panruti Ramachandran confirmed the unanimous decision, hinting at a future realignment. The faction refused to detail reasons but suggested BJP had sidelined them. OPS, previously expelled from AIADMK, is set to tour Tamil Nadu, with alliance decisions left to future political conditions. Observers see this as a potential signal of shifting alliances before the 2026 polls.#opsexit #ndabreakup #tamilnadupolitics #mkstalin #ops #politicalrealignment #aiadmk #bjp #indiapolitics #tamilnaduelections #toi #toibharat Read More

Malegaon blast verdict: M.P. BJP leaders seek apology from Congress, Digvijaya Singh

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday (July 31, 2025) demanded apologies from the Congress for 'crafting narratives like Hindu terrorism' after a court acquitted all seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur, in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. A special NIA court in Mumbai, in its judgment, said that the prosecution 'failed to prove the case' and that the accused 'deserved the benefit of doubt' while acquitting Ms. Thakur, Lt. Col. Prasad Purohit and five others. Six people had lost their lives in the blast on September 29, 2008, in Malegaon city of Maharashtra's Nashik district. Former M.P. Chief Minister Uma Bharti welcomed the verdict and said that the case was used to 'draft a theory of saffron terrorism' while accusing Congress leader and former CM Digvijaya Singh of being its 'originator'. 'The definition of saffron terrorism was coined during this case. Its originator was Digvijaya Singh ji and he was doing this work at the behest of [Congress leader] Rahul Gandhi. To defame Hindutva all over the world, the term saffron terrorism was coined in comparison to Islamic terrorism. And to prove the term, innocent people were made victims,' Ms. Bharti said, while claiming that Ms. Thakur and Lt. Col. Purohit faced severe torture in prison. While specifying that terrorism has no colour, Ms. Bharti claimed that the term 'saffron terrorism' was coined by those who were trying to appease the minorities. She asked what action will be taken against those who 'conspired against the Hindu community'. M.P. CM Mohan Yadav also took to X to hail the verdict and said that it is a 'blow to the Congress' narrow-minded mentality'. 'This verdict is a strong response to those who insult Sanatan Dharma, sadhus-saints, and the saffron flag. The Congress should publicly apologise to all Sanatani people,' he wrote. Meanwhile, Shyam Bhavarlal Sahu, an Indore-based businessman who was discharged from the case in December 2017, said that all the accused had been 'framed in a fabricated case'. 'I was framed under 25-30 charges in the case but we have received justice now. The Congress' conspiracy has been exposed. The party should apologise for its conspiracy, though I don't think it will,' Mr. Sahu said, speaking to news agency PTI. 'While I was in jail after my arrest, my elder brother Mohan Sahu used to come and support me during court appearances. During an appearance, he suffered a heart attack in front of my eyes and died about half-an-hour later. I could not do anything to save him,' said Mr. Sahu, who was arrested in October 2008.

Bihar SIR: Day ahead of publication of draft roll, CEC assures voters on claims of inclusion and exclusion

A day ahead of the publication of draft electoral rolls in Bihar following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar assured voters in the State that all electors and political parties would be invited to give claims and objections from August 1 to September 1. 'The draft electoral rolls of Bihar are being published on Friday, August 1, at the CEC said in a message to voters. 'Physical as well as digital copies will also be given to all recognised political parties in Bihar in all 38 Districts by all the 38 District Election Officers (DEOs) of Bihar.' The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Bihar and 243 Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) will also be inviting electors or any recognised political parties in Bihar to come forward and give claims and objections from August 1 to September 1 for adding and removing names and correction of entries in the draft electoral rolls, the CEC added. The final electoral roll after the SIR exercise, which began on June 24, would be published on September 30. Also Read | Bihar SIR: Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale slams electoral roll revision; claims 1.26 crore voters 'deleted' On July 27, the EC had in a detailed press note said that 91.69% of electors registered in the 2025 voter list in Bihar had submitted enumeration forms and would figure in the draft list to be published on August 1. Of the 7.89 crore electors as on June 24, 2025, over 7.24 crore electors had submitted enumeration forms, indicating overwhelming participation, the poll body said in a statement. This, in effect, means that the names of 65 lakh voters would not make it to the August 1 draft roll. The EC said the reasons for names not being found in the rolls include death, permanent relocation and being enrolled at multiple places. The poll body said young electors, who have attained 18 years of age on July 1, 2025, or would be attaining 18 years on or before October 1, 2025, are being encouraged to file their application in Form 6, along with the prescribed Declaration Form. The commission said it would conduct special campaigns across Bihar from August 1 to September 1 to enrol such young electors, so that all eligible electors can be enrolled, and no one is left out. The SIR order on June 24 had said that the exercise would be carried out across the country beginning with Bihar. The contentious exercise has also been challenged in the Supreme Court. Opposition parties have branded it as National Register of Citizens (NRC) 'through backdoor'.
