Giorgi Mamardashvili learning from Alisson, embracing Liverpool goalkeeping ‘challenge'

New York Times14-07-2025
Giorgi Mamardashvili believes he will develop as a goalkeeper from working with Alisson as he vowed to embrace the challenge of trying to become Liverpool No 1.
The Georgia international officially joined the Premier League champions at the start of July — nearly a year after Liverpool struck a £29million deal with Valencia.

Mamardashvili has replaced Caoimhin Kelleher, who was sold to Brentford for a fee rising to £18m last month, and the new arrival may have to be patient with Alisson so well established in Arne Slot's side.
'What I can tell about Ali, he's one of the best goalkeepers in the world right now and I am so happy to work with him,' he told the club's website.
'I can't wait to start to work with him and learn from him. Of course it will be a challenge. I like challenges and I'm here to just give my best and help the team.
'It's a huge moment for me because joining a club like Liverpool. It's not only a transfer, it's a dream come true for me. I feel ready, motivated and proud. I'm here in the biggest club in Premier League history.
'When I was a child I always watched some videos on YouTube of goalkeepers, and I remember some Liverpool goalkeepers as well. I remember Jerzy Dudek and then Pepe Reina and now Alisson. Liverpool has a big goalkeeper legacy and I want to try to write my own chapter.'
With Alisson absent, Mamardashvili played the first half of Sunday's 3-1 friendly win over Preston North End at Deepdale. It was an emotionally charged occasion following the recent deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva in a car accident in Spain.
'When I first arrived here it was a really tough moment for the club,' he added.
'But everyone here has supported each other and I see here is like a big family. We are not just a team, we are people who care about each other.
'I didn't have a chance to play with him (Jota) but I played against him at Euro 2024, so I saw how amazing he was. I saw stories and messages and the love from people around him.'

Paul Gascoigne 'back home and doing well' after hospital visit, representative says

LONDON (AP) — Former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne is back home and 'doing well' after being hospitalized over the weekend, his representative said Monday. 'Paul voluntarily went into A&E on Friday after struggling with a throat condition he has had for a while,' Carly Saward at The MNT talent agency told The Associated Press in an email. 'He is already back home and doing well.' British newspaper The Sun reported that the 58-year-old Gascoigne had been found 'semi-conscious' at home by a friend on Friday in Poole in south England and initially been admitted to an intensive care unit. Gascoigne helped lead England to the semifinals at the 1990 World Cup and 1996 European Championship and was widely considered one of the most naturally talented players of his generation. But he has battled alcohol addiction for decades and has also had other health problems in recent years. ___ AP soccer:

Notre Dame 2027 QB target Teddy Jarrard will commit later this week on July 24th

It was announced last week by 2027 Georgia quarterback Teddy Jarrard that he has narrowed down his list to just five schools with Notre Dame making the cut. The Irish won't have to wait long to find out if they'll add the 6-foot, 3-inch and 200-pounders to their 2027 class, as on Monday he announced that he will be making his commitment just a few days from now, on July 24th. The other four teams Jarrard is considering are Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State, as he is looking to shut down the process early. It worked out well for Notre Dame at their 2026 quarterback commit Noah Grubbs, who also opted to end his recruitment extremely early. There is more than enough positive momentum for the Irish, as there has been a few insiders that believe the Blue and Gold will win out for Jarrard. Jarrard has done extremely well during the camp circuit this spring and summer, and has made a jump in recruiting rankings since then. He's currently the No. 195 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite, and would be a great addition to Notre Dame's 2027 recruiting class.
