Hong Kong stars mourn passing of Chua Lam

MARTIAL arts star Jackie Chan has shared fond memories of renowned food critic and film producer Chua Lam, who died last week, calling him his 'half master', China Press reported.
Chan recalled his younger days making films in Europe with fellow Hong Kong actors Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. He shared on his Weibo account that Chua Lam was their mentor.
'What he taught us at that time was very fresh and inspirational as we were very young,' Chan wrote. 'He took us along to have fun together and taught us about wine, antiques and collection. He also imparted filmmaking knowledge to us. He was Chua Lam.'
Chan added that Chua Lam taught him how to appreciate life and live it to the fullest. He was among the who's who of Hong Kong's A-listers who paid tribute to Chua, who died at the age of 83 on June 25.
A BBC report on his death called him the 'cultural icon in the Chinese-speaking world'.
Top Hong Kong image consultant Tina Liu recounted the days where she worked with Chua, James Wong and Ni Kuang in a popular 1980s show called Celebrity Talk Show.
(Chua, Cantopop lyricist James Wong, and novelists Ni Kuang and Louis Cha Leung-yung were regarded as the Four Great Talents of Hong Kong. All have passed on now.)
Liu said she had once gifted Chua her own tea egg product which the food critic exclaimed 'tasted so good!' on his social media. She said she was so happy to read his positive review.
'I loathe to say goodbye to Mr Chua Lam as it's like a big part of my life was cut off. Hong Kong will never be able to produce such an interesting and unique personality again. Bye bye, Mr Chua. You will be dearly missed!' she said.

Perez was previously used to endorse a menopausal drug after the AI feature made use of an old clip from her now defunct morning show. The AI software is being exploited to distort videos and images of public figures to misinform the public, as reported by the New York Times . Photo: Sin Chew Daily Hong Kong-based actress Natalie Ng has made a bombshell revelation in her new autobiography – she and her husband, financial expert David Chan, have amicably divorced after 14 years of marriage. The pair first met while studying in the United States and married in 2011. They share two daughters – Scarlet, 10, and Season, eight. In a recent interview with Ming Pao Weekly , Ng – who experienced a recurrence of breast cancer in August last year – revealed that her marriage had been on the rocks long before her diagnosis. The 50-year-old shared that she and her husband had gone through multiple separations and reconciliations over the years. 'Maybe we got married back then because we felt the time was right. Over the years, we have separated and reunited, but the underlying issues were never truly resolved. In the end, we had to make a decision,' she said. Despite the split, Ng – a second runner-up in the 1998 Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant – reiterated that she and her ex-husband maintain a good relationship. 'There's no right or wrong. I hope everyone refrains from making unnecessary speculations. Some people are better off as friends rather than as spouses,' she added. For the record, Ng's health deteriorated earlier in March when the cancer cells spread to her coccyx, advancing to Stage Four. Fortunately, after undergoing treatment, her cancer index has since returned to normal. In a recent video uploaded on social media, Ng said she's currently focused on rebuilding the muscles she lost after the cancer cells caused significant muscle deterioration. Sabrina Carpenter unveils album cover 'approved by God' amid backlash

Photo: AP Sabrina Carpenter divided fans earlier this month with her choice of cover art for her forthcoming album, Man's Best Friend . Playing on the title, she poses on all fours like a dog while a faceless man pulls her hair. While some interpreted the cover as cheeky and ironic — especially given the themes of the album's first single, Manchild — others accused the former Disney Channel star of promoting sexist stereotypes and setting women's rights back decades. Carpenter has addressed criticism by releasing an alternative cover "approved by God," the singer revealed Wednesday on Instagram. The black-and-white image seemingly channels Marilyn Monroe as the singer, dressed in an elegant beaded gown, leans against a man in a suit. Carpenter is front and center while the man's face is partially hidden. This isn't the first time Carpenter has ruffled some feathers. In 2023, she received backlash from the Catholic Church after she filmed parts of her Feather music video at the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church. The Diocese of Brooklyn said it was "appalled" by the nature of the video and the priest who allowed her to film there was removed from his administrative duties. One of the most startling covers I've ever seen was [the Rolling Stones'] Sticky Fingers . That was out there in terms of sexual attitude. So I don't know why she's getting such flak." Man's Best Friend will be released Aug. 29, a little over a year after Carpenter's last project, Short n' Sweet .
