Lea Salonga warns of AI video claiming she's in a wheelchair due to arthritis
Lea Salonga (pic) sent a warning to the public after a fake Artificial Intelligence-generated video claimed she was in a wheelchair due to arthritis.
Salonga took to social media to share that her aunt in Manila had been tricked by the manipulated clip, prompting her to clarify that she is in good health.
'I just chatted with an aunt of mine from Manila who sent a message that was unnerving. She had just seen a video claiming that I was in a wheelchair due to arthritis and was cured by some treatment,' wrote the actress-singer on Facebook on Saturday, June 28.
'I told her that I was fine, experiencing minor aches and pains from my job, but that's it. She was bamboozled by a fake video. AI is scary. Stay vigilant and aware,' she continued.
In 2024, the Filipina Broadway superstar, alongside Sharon Cuneta, was used in fake product endorsements manipulated by AI to make it appear as if they were promoting a 'natural' cure for diabetes.
Many Filipino celebrities including Anne Curtis, Amy Perez and Ogie Alcasid have recently been victimised by deepfake videos, and they warned netizens to be cautious of them.
Perez was previously used to endorse a menopausal drug after the AI feature made use of an old clip from her now defunct morning show.
The AI software is being exploited to distort videos and images of public figures to misinform the public, as reported by the New York Times .
Experts remind users to remain critical and skeptical of the content they consume on the Internet, given the spread of deepfake videos. – Philippine Daily Inquirer/Asia News Network

While conflict raged between the powerful militaries of India and Pakistan, a battle was also fought on the cultural frontlines despite years of shared love for films and music. The deadly fighting in early May – the worst in decades – affected artistes previously untouched by animosity between their leaders. Ali Gul Pir, a Pakistani rapper and comedian with a huge Indian following, released a song years ago mocking Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While he was spared consequences then, in May this year his YouTube channel and Instagram profile were blocked in India. 'Indians now recognise that the digital space serves as a bridge between Pakistanis and Indians, and they seem intent on severing that connection,' Pir said. The collapse in bilateral relations was caused by a deadly April attack on tourists in India-administered Kashmir, which New Delhi blamed on Islamabad. Pakistan denied the allegation and, after tit-for-tat diplomatic retaliation, their militaries fought for four days before a ceasefire was reached. The conflict hit the music industry for the first time, with Pakistani singer Annural Khalid also remembering how her Indian following dropped off. 'Delhi was my top listening city before the ban,' said Khalid, who has 3.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify. 'I suffered a great loss in the audience' from India, she said. The sudden announcement of the death of a 23-year-old singer came as a shock to many. Shim Jae-hyun (심재현), more commonly known as Jaehyun (재현), passed away on 29th June (Sunday) after his fight against leukemia. Known for his soulful voice and genuine personality, Jaehyun touched many with his music and unwavering spirit. Jaehyun showcased remarkable talent and passion throughout his short-lived career. Beyond his musical abilities, the young star was known for his warm personality and genuine connection with those around him, making his legacy even more meaningful. Jaehyun was the youngest member and main vocalist of the K-pop group Known for his gentle personality and soothing vocals, the singer personally resonated with a lot of their Fairies ( Fans). He debuted with the group back in 2020, and they produced six songs before their hiatus in 2023. According to their agency, Haeirum Entertainment, the group went on hiatus to allow their members to rest. Later that year, three members from started a new project called ENPHAZE (엔페이즈), which Jaehyun didn't participate in. The group then silently disbanded. There was barely any news on Jaehyun's physical state, which was why his passing was such a surprise to many. However, he had reportedly been fighting his illness for some time before his death. The news of Jaehyun's passing was shared by his former groupmate, Hojun (호준), through an Instagram story. He expressed deep regret over their lost contact following the group's disbandment and thanked Jaehyun for the cherished memories they created together. 'JaeHyun, I heard the news too late… I hope you can shake off all your worries and live comfortably there. Thank you for the past five years. I hope you're eating lots of delicious food and doing well there. Come visit me in my dreams,' he writes.
