Queen reveals tough time with reading at night

Telegraph06-03-2025
The Queen, who has enjoyed a lifelong passion for reading, has admitted that at night she now struggles to read more than two pages before falling asleep.
In a comment that will resonate with many, Her Majesty, 77, said that these days, when she eventually falls into bed, she is so tired she cannot concentrate.
Asked at the final of a national writing competition whether she still found the time to read, the Queen replied: 'I do when I have a holiday.'
She added: 'I do try occasionally to read at night but I read two pages and fall asleep and have to start again.'
The Queen founded her own online book club, The Queen's Reading Room, and often campaigns on the power of literacy.
At the final of the BBC's annual 500 Words awards ceremony, held at Buckingham Palace, she hailed the young winners as the 'writers of the future'.
The ceremony celebrated the achievements of six winners across two age categories, five to seven and eight to 11, with recognition given to gold, silver, and bronze medalists in each group.
The Queen presented them with medals before they were escorted back to their seats by Gladiators Nitro, whose real name is Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, and Fire, real name Montell Douglas.
The young finalists had their entries read in the palace's ballroom by a group of celebrities, including Oscar-winning actress Olivia Colman, comedian Matt Lucas, McFly's Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher, actress Rose Ayling-Ellis, comic actor Rob Brydon and JLS's JB Gill.
The event took place earlier this month but was broadcast during a special episode of The One Show on Thursday to mark World Book Day.
The Queen fell in love with reading at a young age, inspiring a lifelong love of literature that she has partly attributed to Mark Shand, her late father, who frequently read to her.
She has visited schools and libraries, as well as workplaces and prisons to see the work of adult literacy schemes.
As Duchess of Cornwall, she became patron of several organisations which promote and support literacy including the National Literacy Trust, First Story, Coram Beanstalk and Booktrust.

Rachel Riley takes BRUTAL swipe at Strictly Come Dancing live on Lorraine with Christine Lampard - but fans are distracted by her 'sensational' dress

Rachel Riley took a brutal swipe at Strictly Come Dancing today during a segment on Lorraine - but all fans could talk about was her 'sensational' dress. The Countdown star, 39, appeared on ITV's Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters this week and made a cutting remark about her stint on the BBC dance show during an interview with Christine Lampard. Rachel competed on Strictly back in 2013, where she was partnered with professional dancer Pasha Kovalev, who is now her husband, and was eliminated in week six. Speaking to Christine about diving in the Atlantic with one of the world's most feared predators, she admitted: 'Blue sky and blue sea, you know what you're getting. 'Strictly is just a whole level of other stuff - I'd take great whites over Strictly.' It's not the first time Rachel has opened up about the emotional toll of the competition. Rachel Riley took a brutal swipe at Strictly Come Dancing today during a segment on Lorraine - but all fans could talk about was her 'sensational' dress The Countdown star, 39, appeared on ITV 's Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters this week and said she'd much rather swim with sharks than appear on the BBC dance show again In 2021, she revealed the experience left her with post-traumatic stress disorder, saying she even had to undergo cognitive behavioural therapy to cope. 'If I heard the theme music, I'd start reliving the experience. It was scary and unnerving, so my way of dealing with it is to avoid watching,' she said at the time. Still, she has one fond memory of her time on the show - meeting her husband Pasha, 45, who she married in 2019. The couple now share two children. 'He's just amazing,' she gushed. But viewers were captivated by Rachel's ocean-inspired dress, which featured wave-like ripples in blue and white, and perfectly matched the marine footage playing behind her. One fan wrote online: 'Missed it! Will watch on catch up! Lovely dress Rachel! Very marine!' while another added: 'Gorgeous dress Rachel you look absolutely beautiful.' A third said simply: 'You looked sensational.' Rachel later shared more behind-the-scenes insights on Instagram, posting about the Bahamas-based filming and the dive at night. 'This episode sees us taken to the Sapona shipwreck, where Al Capone used to hold illicit parties out at sea, diving at nighttime, in pitch darkness (it felt like being on the moon), with some incredible wildlife encounters!' she wrote. Viewers were captivated by Rachel's ocean-inspired dress, which featured wave-like ripples in blue and white, and perfectly matched the marine footage playing behind her 'Christine and I are both in agreement that this is still less scary than the thought of having to dance on Strictly again.' It comes as Rachel was left red-faced as she was forced to spell out a rude seven-letter word by her countdown co-star Susie Dent during a recent episode. At the end of one of the rounds, host Colin Murray, 47, was keen to find out how long contestants Joe and Anne's words were. But unfortunately they didn't manage to find one over four. Joe explained that he found alas, while Anne pointed out the word lose. Presenter Colin then went over to Dictionary Corner, where guest Nicki Chapman, 58, shared some good news with lexicographer Susie. Nicki said: 'Tough, really tough. But Susie has come up with arousal for seven,' and an impressed Colin replied: 'Wow. Sensational, well done Susie, well done.' The camera than panned back at Rachel, 39, who looked very awkward after finding out Susie's racy word. The TV star then spelt out her word on the board. Susie has been impressing viewers with her knowledge on Countdown since 1992 She is best known for being the resident lexicographer on the Channel 4 show. Speaking to Christine about diving in the Atlantic with one of the world's most feared predators, she admitted: 'Blue sky and blue sea, you know what you're getting' Fans adored Rachel's marine-themed dress, and praised her 'beautiful' look on social media Meanwhile Rachel has appeared on Countdown since 2009, and Colin has been a permanent presenter of the programme since 2022, after taking over from Anne Robinson, 80. Luckily Susie's word wasn't as rude as one contestant's - which ended up being cut from a previous edit. A former audience member, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Sun that one rude answer was so bad producers were forced to ban it from airing because of fears over complaints. They explained: 'There were a couple of retakes and the funniest one was when a guy said "pisser" in the anagrams round. It was a great six-letter word but they couldn't use it.' Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.

"We always knew that we'd go on together, as you need knowledge of music spanning all decades. "The two teams we were competing with were incredible, I couldn't believe when we go through to the final round, the adrenaline was immense and obviously over the moon with the result.' Paul said: "Tom inherited his love of music from me, we are big quizzers, and music is always our speciality subject. "To get through to the final round was a big achievement as it was competitive game play throughout. "I would have been happy with £1,000 and a day out with my son. "We weren't aware that no-one had won the jackpot before and as we got to song seven in the final round the tension in the studio was palpable. "I was very proud of Tom for getting the song names in about three seconds."

Strictly's Diane Buswell hints at future contestant as she admits 'I'd love it'

The Australian dancer, who waltzed her way to victory last year with Chris McCausland, dropped a major hint about someone she'd like to work with this year Dianne Buswell has dropped a huge hint about a potential new Strictly Come Dancing contestant who she would "love to dance with". In a chat with her former dance partner Chris McCausland, the Australian dancer revealed some tantalising insights into the forthcoming series of the BBC show. ‌ Among the things they talked about was potential addition's to this year's line-up partners and Dianne, who won last year's contest with Chris, admits she's found "the one". The comedian made Strictly history last year by becoming the show's first blind contestant. ‌ Since their victory, the pair have remained close friends and now host their own podcast Winning Isn't Everything. When asked if she knew which celebrities would be on the next series, Dianne said she had heard someone from Neighbours might be in the line-up. ‌ That someone is rumoured to Ramsay Street legend Stefan Dennis, who has played Paul Robinson since the very first episode aired in 1985. The mere idea of doing the Paso Doble with soap royalty exicted Dianne. "I have no idea, Chris!" she said, "I heard that there's gonna be someone from Neighbours, which would be sick! I would love to dance with an Aussie! "That's what I've heard. Someone told me this. Was it you, actually? No, you didn't tell me. Someone told me, 'Oh, word on the street is there's a guy from Neighbours that's gonna be in it'. And I was like, 'Oh, that would be sick! That would be so cool!'" ‌ When asked if the rumoured participant would be a past or present star, Dianne responded that she believed the gossip pertained to an "old veteran", sparking speculation among the podcast hosts about the potential identity. Chris put forward Ian Smith, who plays Harold Bishop, but Dianne dismissed this as unlikely. However, when Stefan was suggested, she confirmed he's the "one" and "definitely" the subject of the rumour. ‌ Earlier this month, similar whispers surfaced that Stefan had joined Strictly now that Neighbours filming had wrapped up at Nunawading Studios in Australia. This came ahead of the soap airing its final episodes in December after it was cancelled by Amazon earlier this year. Three years ago, the online retail behemoth revived the soap after it was axed by Channel 5. However, that specific agreement has now expired, and the final episode was recorded on July 11. This means that Stefan should be available to participate in Strictly if the rumours hold water. An insider disclosed to The Sun: "Stefan is a huge character on the soap and is sure to be a hit with Strictly fans. ‌ "BBC bosses are confident Stefan will bring in the ratings. He has made no secret of the fact that he would love to star on Strictly and will put his all into the training." Apart from Stefan, other celebrities rumoured to be joining this year's Strictly line-up include actress Balvinder Sopal, who plays Suki in EastEnders, reality star Vicky Pattison and former Coronation Street actress Helen Flanagan. Ex-Apprentice contestant Thomas Skinner, jockey Rachael Blackmore, reality star Stacey Solomon and Queen Camilla's son Tom Parker Bowles are also rumoured to be part of this year's show.
