One of Major League Baseball's top trade candidates is officially off the table. The Kansas City Royals are finalizing a multi-year contract extension with former All-Star right-hander Seth Lugo, per Jeff Passan. Lugo, 35, was set to hit the open market in the offseason and was heavily involved in trade rumors. The big veteran has put together another quality season for the Royals, posting a 7-5 record with a 2.95 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 19 starts. Teams that have had interest in Lugo, like the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs, will have to shift their attention elsewhere. The 2024 All-Star was dominant last season, going 16-9 with a 3.00 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP in 206.2 innings. Kansas City is eight-and-a-half games behind the Detroit Tigers for first place in the American League Central and four games back from the third AL Wild Card spot. Even if the Royals miss the postseason, they've extended one of the most consistent starting pitchers over the past three seasons. Though on the outside looking in, this move may spark the Royals. Kansas City has had a disappointing season thus far, but there is plenty of baseball to be played. Alex de Minaur has blown the tennis world away with a beautiful gesture for his devastated opponent after the Washington final. De Minaur saved three championship points to win the 10th ATP title of his career on Sunday, prevailing 5-7 6-1 7-6 (3) against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Fokina was a shattered man after letting three championship points slip at 5-3 in the third - the third of which came when de Minaur produced some insane scramble to survive. The Spaniard has never won a title at ATP level, and has now fallen agonisingly short in two finals. Fokina was in tears after the final point and buried his face in his towel. De Minaur noticed how distraught his opponent was and immediately went to console him. The Aussie was seen sitting next to Fikona before wrapping an arm around his opponent and offering some words of encouragement. Tennis fans and commentators were blown away by de Minaur's gesture, which came before he'd celebrated the victory properly. He also offered some kind words for Fokina in his victory speech, saying: "You're way too good to not have one of these (trophies). It's coming for sure. You deserved it today. I just got lucky. You are a hell of a competitor and player. No one on the tour wants to play you. This is not the end. It's only going up for you." Dream end Lynx's 14-game home winning streak with 90-86 win, Griner scores season-high 22
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Brittney Griner scored a season-high 22 points and the hot-shooting Atlanta Dream handed the Minnesota Lynx their first loss in 15 home games this season 90-86 on Sunday night. The Lynx trailed 83-70 with three minutes to go but pulled within three on Napheesa Collier's basket with 11.3 seconds left. Jordin Canada's free throw at 7 seconds iced it. Atlanta made its first six shots of the fourth quarter before a block by Collier and then made three more in a row. Collier had 13 points in the final period. Canada had 18 points for the Dream (15-10) and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and Allisha Gray both added 12. Collier scored 32 points on 14-of-18 shooting to go with eight rebounds, seven assists, four steals and two blocks to lead the Lynx (22-5). Alanna Smith added 12 points, Courtney Williams 11 and Natisha Hiedeman 10. The Lynx franchise-record home winning streak was the fourth-longest in WNBA history. Atlanta was 5-of-20 shooting in the third quarter when Minnesota cut a 14-point halftime deficit to as little as three. But in the other three quarters the Dream shot 29 of 45 (71%).
