"When you are attacked, you have no choice but to respond," US Lawmakers back India's stance against terror

India Gazette05-06-2025

Washington D.C. [United States], June 5 (ANI): Group 5 of the all-party Indian parliamentary delegation, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, held a high-level interaction with the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC) in Washington, D.C., as part of its diplomatic outreach following Operation Sindoor.
The delegation, which met with key U.S. lawmakers including HFAC Chairman Brian Mast, Ranking Member Gregory Meeks, Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove, and Congressman Bill Huizenga, received strong bipartisan support and condemnation of the recent terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam region.
HFAC Chairman Brian Mast underlined the depth of bipartisan consensus on supporting India. 'This was a very important meeting. This is a bipartisan delegation from the House of Representatives receiving India. We are proud to receive our friend and our ally. Every one of us strongly condemned the terrorist attacks that took place. There's no room in this world for those kinds of attacks,' he said.
'The world was holding its breath, watching what had taken place, both in disgust and also in anticipation of the response. When you are attacked, you have no choice but to respond. The world does not allow anything else, and those responses needed to take place. We have a great friendship and partnership between our nations, and we see nothing but growth and expansion in the future,' he added.
'Certainly, I think all of us were very concerned about the terrorist attack in northern India, and I certainly personally condemn it. I know all of my colleagues also condemn that. That is something that we need to work cooperatively on -- to root out those terrorists and make sure that they are not able to strike any country,' said Congress leader Bill Huizenga.
Congresswoman Kamlager-Dove echoed similar sentiments. 'I condemned the attacks in Pahalgam and am grateful for the ceasefire, hoping that there can be lasting peace. I also recognise how strong the U.S.-Indian partnership has been, and it's so important that we continue that. Representing Los Angeles, issues around visa access for the World Cup and the Olympics are a priority, as well as how we can build our relationships with the tech industry in India and with Bollywood. So those were some of the things I raised,' she said.
Congressman Gregory Meeks, Ranking Member of the Committee, stressed shared democratic values. 'The relationship between the United States and India -- we are bound together, the oldest and the largest democracies in the world. Our values are the same,' he said.
'We shared our condolences because we cannot tolerate terrorism anywhere. We support India's right to defend itself and ensure that terrorism does not take place there. Just as important is the dialogue we had about working collectively globally. India has been a great partner -- whether it's on QUAD, trade, or working together on issues like Ukraine and Russia in a responsible manner,' Meeks added.
Leading the Indian delegation, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor thanked the U.S. lawmakers for their 'strong and unconditional' support.
'There was, as the Chairman said, complete unanimity in condemning the terrorist attacks and in defending India's right to defend itself. We are very grateful for that support because it was strong and unconditional,' Tharoor said.
'Equally, of course, we talked about broader issues involving our countries ' trade, the economy, students, visas -- broader concerns about the relationship. But everybody in the meeting, on both sides -- the Indian side and the American side -- wants to see this relationship becoming stronger, more effective, and covering more aspects of life and geopolitics,' he added.
The Indian all-party delegation's visit to Washington follows stops in Brazil and Europe, aimed at consolidating international support against terrorism and highlighting India's strategic interests post Operation Sindoor. (ANI)

Prashant Kishor slams PM Narendra Modi's Siwan visit: ‘Bihar not going to fall for hoax'

Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) Founder Prashant Kishor on Sunday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his visit to Siwan, accusing him of ignoring key issues like unemployment and student migration in Bihar. Jan Suraaj is led by Prashant Kishor and is in fray for Bihar polls.(PTI) Speaking to the media during his 'Bihar Badlav' rally in Siwan, Kishor said, "Did Modi ji speak about how to stop migration of students in Siwan? Modi ji should talk about when people will get employment in Bihar." "Modi Ji came down from his helicopter, spoke about four things, and left. The people of Bihar are no longer going to fall for that hoax," he added. On June 20, PM Modi visited Siwan, where he flagged off a state-of-the-art locomotive built at the Marhowra Plant, for export to the Republic of Guinea, under the 'Make in India' initiative. The plant became the first to manufacture an export locomotive. They are equipped with high-horsepower engines, advanced AC propulsion systems, microprocessor-based control systems, and ergonomic cab designs, incorporating technologies like regenerative braking. PM Modi also flagged off the Vande Bharat Express between Patliputra and Gorakhpur via Muzaffarpur and Bettiah on Friday. During his visit, PM Modi criticised opposition parties in Bihar for the slow progress of the state during their tenure. He said that the Congress and RJD supported Gundaraj and corruption. "RJD and Congress are against Bihar and investments. They can never make a place in the heart of Biharis," the Prime Minister said. Intensifying his criticism of the INDIA bloc allies, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the RJD and Congress of undermining the self-respect of the people of Bihar, "My Bihari brothers and sisters show their mettle by working even in the most difficult situations. They never compromise with his self-respect. But the people with the Panja (Congress) and the lantern (RJD) together have greatly hurt Bihar's self-respect." The Bihar Assembly elections are expected to be held later this year, in October or November; however, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has not yet announced the exact dates. While the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) seeks to retain power, the INDIA bloc, comprising the RJD and Congress, aims to oust it. Jan Suraaj, led by Prashant Kishor, is also seeking the people's mandate.

Globalisation 2.0: India well positioned to emerge as one of new centres of gravity: Anand Mahindra

A growing wave of protectionism is challenging decades of liberal trade order, dramatically highlighted by the Trump's tariffs, but economic nationalism does not spell the death of globalisation rather it heralds its rebirth, presenting an opportunity for India to emerge as a vital player, according to M&M Ltd Chairman Anand Mahindra . In his address to shareholders in Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) Annual Report for 2024-25, Mahindra, said "India, too, will face challenges" due to the ongoing global turmoil in the midst of a growing wave of protectionism. He said globalisation is evolving and the US market centrality and China-centric supply chains are being replaced by multi-polar, regional collaborations. As structural and political uncertainties diminish US dominance, alternative capital destinations are emerging, Mahindra noted. Similarly, global supply chains are diversifying away from China, creating new trade partnerships. Lower tariff barriers among regional partners may emerge, boosting free trade and reshaping international trade centres of gravity. Live Events "Ironically, the US shift toward de-globalisation may lead to a new avatar of globalisation 'multi-polar, regional, and driven by domestic imperatives. In such shifting sands, I believe India is well-positioned to emerge as one of the new centres of gravity," Mahindra asserted. He further said, "We are a stable democracy, generally regarded as a trustworthy partner, and are bolstered by a strong military that is not politicised." Referring to Pakistan, he said, "The situation with our provocative neighbour is always volatile, but I am optimistic that we can demonstrate the limits to our tolerance without impeding our path to economic ascendance." These implications offer a portal to a stronger future for India and Indian companies, he noted, adding "but the future remains uncertain." On how the Mahindra group should navigate these turbulent waters, he said, "Whether it be a country or a business, the winners will be the ones who can successfully navigate uncertainty and ambiguity -- the ones who are resilient." Referring to the current global situation, he said it remains fluid. Recent US-China tariff talks and strengthened trade ties with the UK suggest a pragmatic layer to US trade policy, combining protectionism with strategic global engagement. "However, there remains a strong likelihood of significant decoupling between the US and China, he added. Whatever the outcome, it is apparent that many nations will have to swallow some "poison", Mahindra said adding, "international trade has already slowed amidst heightened uncertainty and dampened investor confidence." Noting that industries reliant on global supply chains -- like electronics and consumer goods -- will bear the brunt of rising input costs, Mahindra said "countries deeply integrated into global trade networks must rethink dependencies and diversify sourcing." Established geopolitical alliances are being realigned, ushering in a new era of economic nationalism. Businesses worldwide will adapt by localising operations, re-engineering supply chains, and exploring alternate markets. "India, too, will face challenges. Our large trade deficit, vulnerabilities in certain sectors, increased competition among nations, and uncertainties affecting GDP aspirations are all challenges that must be met," Mahindra said. He pointed out that key industries, such as steel and aluminium, could face headwinds, and export volumes may be impacted. "The challenge will be to minimise the adverse effects, akin to how Lord Shiva confined the poison to his throat without letting it spread (during Samudra Manthan)," Mahindra said. He cautioned against focusing solely on mitigation saying it reflects a reactive mindset. "Instead, we can proactively view this as an opportunity to enable some 'Amrit' to emerge," he said, suggesting to "seize this challenge as an opportunity to accelerate economic growth exhorting private enterprise to play a pivotal role in this transformation. Mahindra noted that China's adversarial stance may create opportunities for India to position itself as a supply chain alternative -- a long-term goal for Indian business. "Innovation and R&D could receive renewed focus, while manufacturing could once again take centre stage. Restrictions on China and high tariffs for other competing countries could open new markets for Indian goods," he said. While the potential exists, he said achieving it will require a concerted focus on manufacturing and a palpable increase in private investment. "Speed and agility are essential, as countries like the Philippines and Vietnam are already touting themselves as future manufacturing hubs. We must act swiftly and strategically to secure our share of the Amrit," Mahindra said.
