Woman charged with 743 counts of database tampering, to undergo psychiatric evaluation

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court today ordered a former employee of a pay-TV company to undergo 30 days of psychiatric observation at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta after she was charged with 743 counts of unauthorised modifications to the company's database.
Judge Norma Ismail directed that Nora Idayu Jaafar, 48, be admitted to the hospital next Monday following a request by her lawyer, Daniel Annamalai, who informed the court that his client had a referral letter from a private clinic to consult a psychiatrist.
"She sought medical attention on June 6 and was referred for psychiatric evaluation.
"The doctor suspects she may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)," he said.
Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Rohaiza Abdul Rahman requested the court to decide whether the accused should be sent for psychiatric evaluation following the defence's application.
The court set July 29 for further mention of the case.
During today's hearing, two court interpreters took nearly two hours to read out 132 charges to the accused.
Nora pleaded not guilty to all the charges, which alleged that she made unauthorised changes to the company's customer database by converting standard user accounts into corporate accounts without permission.
She is facing a total of 743 charges, 30 of which were read out on June 4 before she collapsed in the dock midway through proceedings, prompting the court to adjourn and resume the remainder today.
Previously, the court granted her bail at RM10,000 with one surety and imposed additional conditions requiring her to surrender her passport and report to the nearest police station once a month until the trial concludes.
According to the charge sheet, Nora, who was attached to the Commercial Support Unit, is accused of knowingly making unauthorised modifications to account data, thereby altering the contents of the company's database.
The offences allegedly involved 743 Astro customers and were committed between 2013 and 2019 at Astro's office in Menara Icon, Jalan Tun Razak.
She is charged under Section 5(1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997, which carries a penalty of up to seven years' imprisonment, a fine of up to RM100,000, or both, upon conviction.

Retired Woman Loses RM436,000 In Online IPO Investment Scam

GEORGE TOWN, June 28 (Bernama) -- A 62-year-old retired airline programme manager recently lost RM436,000 of her life savings after falling victim to an online investment scam involving fake initial public offering (IPO). Penang Deputy Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the woman lodged a report with the Timur Laut Commercial Crime Investigation Division after discovering she had been deceived by a fraudulent scheme. The scam was promoted through a WhatsApp group called 'enspire capital', which promised high-returns through IPO investments. The victim was instructed to download an app named 'freeman plus' as the investment platform. 'Between May 12 and June 2, she made 56 fund transfers to four different company accounts. Despite the promises, she received no returns. Instead, the suspects kept requesting additional payments,' he said in a statement tonight. Investigations found the victim used her personal and Employees Provident Fund (EPF) savings to finance the so-called investments. Mohd Alwi said efforts are ongoing to identify and track down the syndicate responsible. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. -- BERNAMA

Former programme manager loses RM436k in non-existent IPO investment scam

GEORGE TOWN: Police have opened an investigation paper into a non-existent investment scheme that left a 62-year-old woman RM436,000 poorer, following a series of transactions involving four different companies. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Penang deputy police chief, Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin, said the victim, a former programme manager with an airline company, was lured by an online advertisement for high-return IPO investments and lodged a report on June 12. "Initial investigations revealed that the scam was carried out via a WhatsApp group known as 'Enspire Capital', which promoted what appeared to be legitimate investment opportunities. "The victim was then instructed to download a mobile application called 'Freeman Plus', which allegedly served as the investment platform. "Between May 12 and June 2, the victim made 56 money transfers to four separate company accounts, believing she was investing in a lucrative IPO scheme," he said in a statement. Alwi said no returns were received as promised, and the perpetrators continued demanding additional funds until the victim realised she had been duped. "The total amount lost comprises the woman's personal savings and funds withdrawn from her Employees Provident Fund (EPF) account," he added.

Six more Sabah politicians implicated in corruption

File photo for illustration purposes only. KOTA KINABALU (June 28): Six more politicians in Sabah have been accused of involvement in the mining licence scandal. A MalaysiaKini report on Saturday alleged that among the politicians named are from two local parties. The portal claimed that a source who spoke on condition of anonymity has provided them with screenshots allegedly taken from a video recording involving the political leaders, with the total amount of alleged bribery involving RM3.96 million between the six individuals. The source had further alleged that one of them received the highest amount of RM1.78 million, followed by two who received RM600,000 each. The other three allegedly received RM530,000, RM300,000 and RM150,000. In addition to the video evidence, the source claimed that WhatsApp messages and other documents exist to support the transactions. With the latest development, 15 politicians have been implicated in corrupt activities between 2023 and 2024, in exchange for assistance in processing mineral exploration licence applications. Last week, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that two state assemblymen and a businessman are expected to be charged later this month.
