2025 College Football Predictions: 'This Year's Indiana Is Illinois'
As someone who did time in Champaign as an undergrad during the Ron Zook years, and spent his fair share of hours watching awful Illini football games at Memorial Stadium, I can't believe I even typed that question out.
Yet here we are, six weeks before the 2025 college football season and Bret Bielema's Illini are one of the most popular offseason darlings.
In fact, my FOX Sports teammate Joel Klatt recently ranked Illinois as the No. 1 most likely team to make the College Football Playoff for the first time.
"Bielema has built this team into what he wants," Klatt said on "The Joel Klatt Show."
"Physical and tough. They [beat South Carolina] in the bowl game. Sixteen starters are back. [Quarterback] Luke Altmeyer is back for his third season and the entire offensive line is back in front of him.
"Here's the schedule," Klatt continued. "They don't have to play Penn State, Oregon or Michigan and they get Ohio State at home. They've got a Missouri-esque Big Ten schedule and I think they've hit the lottery.
"This year's Indiana is Illinois."
Cue a bartender at KAMS pouring a round of blue guys.
The two big question marks I have around the roster are at wide receiver and defensive line. It won't be easy to replace NFL receivers Pat Bryant and Zakhari Franklin, and there are three newcomers on defense in the trenches.
It'll also take 10 wins to make the CFP, so the Illini must be even better than last year. If I've learned anything over the years, it's that it's much easier for a non-blue blood to come out of nowhere than it is to sustain success.
Illinois' last 10-win regular season came back in 2001, with quarterback Kurt Kittner, star wideout Brandon Lloyd, defensive backs Eugene Wilson and Christian Morton, and with head coach Ron Turner at the helm.
The 2002 team finished 5-7.
This year's Illini have a regular-season win total of 8.5 (u-155) at BetMGM, and they're as high as +575 to be a playoff team across the market.
One Las Vegas bookmaker sees the upside Klatt sees.
"The program is much improved," Wynn Resorts trading manager Motoi Pearson told me. "I don't know if they're going to make the Playoff, but after what Indiana did last year, I'm basically a believer in any team ever."
"I have Illinois 16 teams higher than Indiana," Pearson admitted.
What's that spread on a neutral field?
"Illinois -4."
Elsewhere, I can't stop salivating at the thought of getting points with Miami in the Hurricanes' home opener against Notre Dame on Sunday, Aug. 31.
The Irish are fresh off a run to the national championship game and morale is high. So is the appetite to bet Marcus Freeman's squad, as ND is currently -3.
Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck is a polarizing player, but FanDuel has a stale 37-1 price on him to win the Heisman Trophy. Let's not forget Beck was a co-favorite last August while at Georgia and you can argue Miami's offensive style is more conducive to big quarterback stats and success than most.
Just ask Cam Ward, the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
I rarely bet Heisman preseason favorites and have little interest in Texas quarterback Arch Manning around 6-to-1. If anything, maybe he'll struggle at Ohio State or Florida, and we can jump in at double digits.
Only six more weeks 'til our Saturdays are back.

Illinois edge rusher Gabe Jacas shooting up NFL Draft boards
Gabe Jacas discusses what he needs to do in order to further improve his already high NFL Draft stock The Illinois Fighting Illini, who finished last season ranked #16 in the final AP poll, opened training camp today with sky high expectations. Illinois returns 18/22 starters from a 10-win team that has a host of NFL Draft prospects. Senior EDGE Gabe Jacas has the highest draft stock of anybody on the team. He is starting to show up regularly in the second round of NFL mock drafts everywhere. At this point, with the season having not even started yet, it's just all speculation. Jacas knows he must put in the work on in order to realize his National Football League aspirations. The Port St. Lucie, FL native discussed the specific fundamentals that he needs to work on during his final season of college football. "It's hand placement, it's leverage," he said in an exclusive with RG. "It's staying low, and just that first that get off, that first step, and just being quicker off the ball." Jacas, who projects perfectly to the next level as a 3-4 Outside Linebacker, wasn't done. He continued listing out specific ways in which he knows he can get better, and thus continue moving up the draft boards: "doing different moves, doing moves that can help me win (individual matchups) faster. So there are always things I can improve on in my game, and I've been working on those things." "Just being efficient with my hands, (in the way that I) attack the tackles, just having a move in mind at all times, and, you know being proactive on the field, having that motor." "A lot of the great pass rushers, they have a good motor, and that's something I would like to add to my game." Jacas, who was named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy (biggest impact, both on and off the field) and Bronko Nagurski (Defensive Player of the Year) preseason watch lists, also added that many of the best pass rushers have a great motor, and that is something he would like to add to his overall game. The young man pegged by CBS Sports in April as the 20th best overall player in college football, regardless of position, is living in the golden age of EDGEs. If you're a college football player looking to get drafted, this is a great time to be an edge rusher, or defensive end/outside linebacker hybrid. The NFL currently places a high premium on this position. Jacas had 13 tackles for a loss, eight sacks and 10 quarterback hurries last season, leading the Illini in all three categories. He is the standout player, and leader of a stellar Illinois defensive front seven that should be among the better units in the Big Ten. It has been about a quarter century since the last time the Illini had preseason expectations as high as they currently do. Typically, Illinois does not have high preseason expectations, and that's understandable, given how they have not accomplished back to back winning seasons since 2010-2011, and both of those seasons saw a 7-6 finish. The program has not accomplished consecutive eight-win seasons since 1989-1990, but head coach Bret Bielema has turned things around. A defensive lineman during his playing days at Iowa, Bielema knows what it takes to play stout defense in the Big Ten. He's also done a great job of developing Illini defenders and sending them to the NFL. Devon Witherspoon (Seattle Seahawks), Sydney Brown (Philadelphia Eagles), Quan Martin and Johnny Newton (Washington Commanders) are a few examples from the past couple years. Jacas definitely seems next in line. As midsummer passes and Labor Day weekend draws closer, the number of media opportunities with college football players increases. One of the joys of these late summer media opps is hearing prospects discuss what they need to do in order to reach the league. It's enjoyable on two levels. First, it really makes you realize that football is just around the corner. Secondly, it's always uplifting to hear someone get fired up when discussing their hopes, dreams, motivations and aspirations.

Xavier Worthy injury update: Latest status report, news for Chiefs WR from training camp
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy left training camp practice on Tuesday, July 29, after suffering what seemed to be a head injury. Despite appearing visibly rattled, Worthy was able to make his way to the medical tent to be evaluated. Xavier Worthy injury update According to KSHB 41 News reporter Matt Foster, Worthy was back on the field for workouts on Friday, August 1, after clearing concussion protocol. During his comments to the media after practice, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters that Worthy's concussion symptoms were caused by a "liquid in his ear" that affected the speedster's equilibrium. How long will Xavier Worthy be out? Given that Worthy returned to practice on Friday, it seems unlikely that the former first-round pick's status for Kansas City's first preseason exhibition would be affected by his "fluid" issue. Chiefs WR depth chart The Chiefs have not released an official depth chart for the upcoming season, but veteran wide receivers Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown and Rashee Rice will be able to pick up the slack should Worthy need to miss time due to his condition.
