‘MindsEye' From Rockstar Veteran Lands June Release With Extensive Level Creation Tool

Geek Culture28-05-2025
Build a Rocket Boy, an independent game development company founded by Rockstar North and Grand Theft Auto veteran Leslie Benzies, has released a new trailer for its debut game, MindsEye , offering a detailed look at its futuristic shooter action, post-launch content and a unique in-depth level creation tool.
The gameplay overview trailer showcases more of the third-person cover-shooting action players can expect from the title, set in the backdrop of a near-futuristic city called Redrock. Players will take on the role of Jacob Diaz, played by Alex Hernandez, who some might recognise as Lincoln Clay from 2016's Mafia III , a former soldier with a mysterious neural implant that enables him to control a companion drone to enhance his combat abilities.
According to the game's official description, MindsEye will feature a 'tightly crafted linear story campaign' revolving around a 'conspiracy involving rogue AI, corporate greed, an unchecked military, and a threat so sinister that it endangers the very survival of humanity'. Despite its apparent open-world nature, it's worth noting that the game will not be a GTA clone, instead being more in line with the earlier Mafia games, meaning players shouldn't expect a cluttered world filled with side activities, but a focused, narrative experience complemented by a city to explore.
While the game might seem like a standard shooter affair, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, considering today's age of open-world bloat and games chasing trends, MindsEye does offer something wholly unique in its PC-only game creation system, Build.MindsEye , an in-game platform that allows players to make use of an extensive developer creation tool to build fully fleshed-out levels using game assets, potentially boosting the longevity of the game with a stream of user-created content.
The trailer also showcased the game's content roadmap, detailing what players can expect at launch and in the future. MindsEye will launch with its story campaign and something described as 'single-player free roam', alongside a few additional missions, such as a horde mode called 'Destruction Site Shootout', two combat missions titled 'Honor Amongst Thieves' and 'Friendly Fire', 12 races and three drone races. Users who pre-order the game also get access to its Premium Pass, which provides an extra horde mode mission and some cosmetics.
Moving forward, MindsEye is set to receive a 'constant stream' of content monthly, with its roadmap detailing 'special collaborations', new missions and single-player modes, multiplayer and free roam updates throughout the rest of the year, with owners of the Premium Pass gaining access to extra missions and cosmetics. MindsEye will launch on 10 June 2025 on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Sony Eyes Jeremy Allen White And Mikey Madison For 'The Social Network' Sequel

Sony Pictures has begun developing its high-profile sequel to 2010's The Social Network and recently met with Mikey Madison ( Anora ) and Jeremy Allen White ( The Bear ) for discussions. Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White With Madison having won this year's Best Actress Oscar for her stellar performance as a shrewd and independent stripper in Anora (2024), and White making a strong play for his third acting Emmy for his role reprisal as the strong-willed but self-destructive Carmen 'Carmy' Berzatto in The Bear in September, the two of them are promising prospects to lead the upcoming sequel that is currently in development. While the lauded 2010 film centred around Jesse Eisenberg's ( Now You See Me 2 ) Mark Zuckerberg, Andrew Garfield's ( The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ) Eduardo Saverin and the trials and tribulations involved in the founding of Facebook, now rebranded as Meta, its sequel film will be based on a series of articles that Jeff Horwitz had written that The Wall Street Journal that has been titled The Facebook Files . Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the 2010 screenplay and cinched an Academy Award for his efforts, has also penned the script and is slated to direct the film. Jesse Eisenberg's Mark Zuckerberg and Andrew Garfield's Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network (2010) The Facebook Files chronicled the company's internal findings, which highlighted the harmful impact its social media platforms were having on young users, acknowledged its awareness of the spread of misinformation and its links to real-world violence, and revealed its potential role in fueling the events that led up to the insurrection on 6 January 2021. While insider sources have emphasised that no deals have been made and the film is still in developmental stages, the studio is certainly prioritising and fast-tracking the film. Sorkin has already met with Madison and White, and if offers are made and closed, Madison is slated to play Frances Haugen, the data engineer and eventual whistleblower who went to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and The Wall Street Journal with her information. Meanwhile, White would play former The Wall Street Journal reporter Horwitz, who headed the exposés on the Facebook Files. Photo Credits: Matt McClain / Getty Images While Sony has not commented yet on the film, an insider source have disclosed that the project will be reminiscient of Michael Mann's The Insider (1999) that depicted a whistleblower exposing the truth on the tobacco industry by talking to 60 Minutes , which Haugen had also done in her process of unmasking the dark side of Facebook / Meta. Another source has instead described the project as having echoes of Spotlight (2015), following Boston Globe journalists who investigated child sex abuse perpetrated by the city's Roman Catholic clergy. While it remains to be seen how the tone of the film will be and the final decisions that will be made by the creative team, with Madison and White's ample acting accolades, they are likely to do justice to the depth and breadth of the film's weighty topic. The MCU's X-Men Reboot Will Be More "Youth-Oriented" Take

Despite the X-Men not arriving in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) until at least 2028, after the events of Avengers: Secret Wars (2027) have taken place, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige has already disclosed more details on his plans to recast the X-Men and other key characters in the MCU, expressing that the reborn X-Men team will go in a 'very youth-oriented' direction this time. (L-R) Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian (David Harbour), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) and John Walker (Wyatt Russell) in Marvel Studios' THUNDERBOLTS*. Photo by Chuck Zlotnick. © 2025 MARVEL. 'Jake's going to make a youth-focused reboot. That may be reflected in mutant castings, and it'll definitely be felt in the tone and perspective of the film,' Feige said. Feige seems keen to get an early start on the project, with development already underway. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023) screenwriter Michael Lesslie has been confirmed to be penning the screenplay, and Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier has also recently been tapped to spearhead the project. On his choice to pick Schreier to helm the project, Feige expressed how he was impressed with what Schreier did to appeal to the sensibilities of younger demographics. He said, 'We had a great experience with [Schreier] on Thunderbolts , and if you saw that movie, what he did with those character interactions — he also has his pulse on, shall we say, a younger demographic. Not—he's younger than me, for sure—but he's tapped into that in a way that I think is important.' In that same interview with Nerdist, Feige emphasises how vital it was for their choice of director to have this connection with a younger audience, stating, 'It was important for Thunderbolts, much more important for X-Men, because X-Men, as it was in the comics, will be a very youth-oriented, focused and cast movie.' In a chat with The Playlist, when asked if the new reboot would be recognisably different from previous iterations, Schreier reinforced that the MCU's reboot of the X-Men would likely be distinct from the ones previously shown onscreen in 20th Century Fox's X-Men films, despite Fox's own younger reboot via the First Class line of prequels. Halle Berry's Storm, Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier, Fan Bingbing's Blink, Ian McKellen's Magneto and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) The X-Men film franchise has been chock-full of big names such as Patrick Stewart ( Star Trek: Picard ) who played Charles Xavier / Professor X, Ian McKellen ( The Hobbit trilogy) who played Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto, James Marsden ( Sonic the Hedgehog film series) who played Scott Summers / Cyclops, Kelsey Grammer ( Frasier ) who played Hank McCoy / Beast, Rebecca Romijn ( Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ) who played Mystique, and Alan Cumming ( The Traitors ) who played Nightcrawler, who are all set to reprise their roles in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday (2027). The franchise has also boasted renowned actors the likes of Hugh Jackman ( The Greatest Showman ) who recently reprised his role as Logan / Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), Halle Berry ( The Union ) who played Ororo Munroe / Storm, Famke Janssen ( How to Get Away with Murder ) who played Jean Grey / Phoenix, Elliot Page ( Umbrella Academy ) who played Kitty Pryde, Shawn Ashmore ( The Rookie ) who played Bobby Drake / Iceman and Vinnie Jones ( MacGyver ) who played Cain Markok / Juggernaut in its original line of films. Olivia Munn's Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) This is on top of the rebooted First Class line of prequels that also featured an impressive lineup of high-profile actors like James McAvoy ( Split ) as Charles Xavier / Professor X, Michael Fassbender ( The Killer ) as Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence ( The Hunger Games trilogy) as Raven / Mystique, Nicholas Hoult ( Superman ) as Hank McCoy / Beast, Evan Peters ( Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story ) as Peter Maximoff / Quicksilver, Lucas Till ( MacGyver ) as Alex Summers / Havok, Sophie Turner ( Game of Thrones ) as Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan ( Ready Player One ) as Scott Summers / Cyclops, Ben Hardy ( Bohemian Rhapsody ) as Angel, Alexandra Shipp ( Tick, Tick… Boom! ) as Ororo Munroe / Storm, Lana Condor ( To All the Boys film series) as Jubilee, and Olivia Munn ( The Predator ) as Psylocke. Sophie Turner's Jean Grey, Kodi Smit-McPhee's Nightcrawler and Tye Sheridan's Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) While there's no news of casting yet, any of the new and younger actors set to take over the reins of the X-Men in the MCU will certainly have massive shoes to fill. But until then, fans can only continue to speculate and discuss their favourite fancastings. Given how fan castings and cries for John Krasinski to play Reed Richards ultimately led to his brief appearance as Mister Fantastic in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness , who knows? Maybe Marvel Studios may heed fans after all. Warner Bros. Working On Another Live-Service Game Despite Suicide Squad Flop

Despite losing US$200 million after last year's Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League , Warner Bros. Games has apparently not learnt its lesson and is hard at work on another new live-service title based in the DC Comics universe. This comes from a job listing for an executive producer role at WB Games Montréal, with the job scope including overseeing 'all phases of development, from concept to post-launch live operations', and the experience required including a 'deep understanding of the full game development lifecycle, including live services'. While the exact game title was not specified, the post did mention that it will be a 'high-quality AAA game based on one of the iconic IPs from the vast Warner Bros. and DC Comics catalogue.' It seems that despite its recent string of flops, from the aforementioned Suicide Squad , to the recently shut-down MultiVersus and 2022's disappointing Gotham Knights , WB Games has decided that the best course of action to regain the favour lost within its playbase is to double down on the very thing they hate, the dreaded live-service format. This also comes after a studio-wide shake-up late last year, where Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav discussed plans to only focus on four of its major gaming IPs: DC, Hogwarts Legacy , Mortal Kombat , and Game of Thrones , which makes this new live-service game likely to fall under the DC umbrella. This decision to once again stick to the live-service format becomes even more baffling when considering how tough of a time WB Games has it as of late, with Suicide Squad's flop leading to a 41 per cent drop in its gaming revenue last year and a four percent decrease across the studio's entire revenue, which comprises of gaming, TV and cinema. The studio has also seen layoffs and closures in the months that followed, including a team 'restructuring' at Rocksteady in September 2024, and the cancellation of its Wonder Woman game alongside the closure of three studios, Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB San Diego in February this year. Will WB Games' insistence on the live-service format somehow work in its favour, or is the studio committing career suicide? Only time will tell, but if history has taught us anything about the genre, it's likely the latter.
