MindsEye review – a dystopian future that plays like it's from 2012
There's a Sphere-alike in Redrock, MindsEye's open-world version of Las Vegas. It's pretty much a straight copy of the original: a huge soap bubble, half sunk into the desert floor, with its surface turned into a gigantic TV. Occasionally you'll pull up near the Sphere while driving an electric vehicle made by Silva, the megacorp that controls this world. You'll sometimes come to a stop just as an advert for an identical Silva EV plays out on the huge curved screen overhead. The doubling effect can be slightly vertigo-inducing. At these moments, I truly get what MindsEye is trying to do. You're stuck in the ultimate company town, where oligarchs and other crooks run everything, and there's no hope of escaping the ecosystem they've built. MindsEye gets this all across through a chance encounter, and in a way that's both light of touch and clever. The rest of the game tends towards the heavy-handed and silly, but it's nice to glimpse a few instances where everything clicks. With its Spheres and omnipresent EVs, MindsEye looks and sounds like the future. It's concerned with AI and tech bros and the insidious creep of a corporate dystopia. You play as an amnesiac former-soldier who must work out the precise damage that technology has done to his humanity, while shooting people and robots and drones. And alongside the campaign itself, MindsEye also has a suite of tools for making your own game or levels and publishing them for fellow players. All of this has come from a studio founded by Leslie Benzies, whose production credits include the likes of GTA 5. What's weird, then, is that MindsEye generally plays like the past. Put a finger to the air and the wind is blowing from somewhere around 2012. At heart, this is a roughly hewn cover shooter with an open world that you only really experience when you're driving between missions. Its topical concerns mainly exist to justify double-crosses and car chases and shootouts, and to explain why you head into battle with a personal drone that can open doors for you and stun nearby enemies. It can be an uncanny experience, drifting back through the years to a time when many third-person games still featured unskippable cut-scenes and cover that could be awkward to unstick yourself from. I should add that there are plenty of reports at the moment of crashes and technical glitches and characters turning up without their faces in place. Playing on a relatively old PC, aside from one crash and a few amusing bugs, I've been mostly fine. I've just been playing a game that feels equally elderly. This is sometimes less of a criticism than it sounds. There is a definite pleasure to be had in simple run-and-gun missions where you shoot very similar looking people over and over again and pick a path between waypoints. The shooting often feels good, and while it's a bit of a swizz to have to drive to and from each mission, the cars have a nice fishtaily looseness to them that can, at times, invoke the Valium-tinged glory of the Driver games. (The airborne craft are less fun because they have less character.) And for a game that has thought a lot about the point at which AI takes over, the in-game AI around me wasn't in danger of taking over anything. When I handed over control of my car to the game while tailing an enemy, having been told I should try not to be spotted, the game made sure our bumpers kissed at every intersection. The streets of this particular open world are filled with amusingly unskilled AI drivers. I'd frequently arrive at traffic lights to be greeted by a recent pile-up, so delighted by the off-screen collisions that had scattered road cones and Dumpsters across my path that I almost always stopped to investigate. I even enjoyed the plot's hokeyness, which features lines such as: 'Your DNA has been altered since we last met!' Has it, though? Even so, I became increasingly aware that clever people had spent a good chunk of their working lives making this game. I don't think they intended to cast me as what is in essence a Deliveroo bullet courier for an off-brand Elon Musk. Or to drop me into an open world that feels thin not because it lacks mission icons and fishing mini-games, but because it's devoid of convincing human detail. I suspect the problem may actually be a thematically resonant one: a reckless kind of ambition. When I dropped into the level editor I found a tool that's astonishingly rich and complex, but which also requires a lot of time and effort if you want to make anything really special in it. This is for the mega-fans, surely, the point-one percent. It must have taken serious time to build, and to do all that alongside a campaign (one that tries, at least, to vary things now and then with stealth, trailing and sniper sections) is the kind of endeavour that requires a real megacorp behind it. MindsEye is an oddity. For all its failings, I rarely disliked playing it, and yet it's also difficult to sincerely recommend. Its ideas, its moment-to-moment action and narrative are so thinly conceived that it barely exists. And yet: I'm kind of happy that it does.

MindsEye Guide: Missions 1-3 Walkthrough
Mindseye Guide: Missions 1-3 Mission 1: Welcome To Redrock Back to top ↑ Welcome to MindsEye! This action adventure title is rather linear (and very buggy) but it's also got a few confusing missions that you may need some guidance for. This guide will get you through the entire campaign and point out any tips, tricks or workarounds to known issues along the way. We'll get you through this one to the other side quickly and in one piece. There aren't any collectibles to grab beyond enemy weapons (of which there are 11) so there's no danger of missing anything unless you're actively avoiding combat. There's also Mission Select from your main menu too so you can replay any chapter at any time. Aside from one trophy (which we'll get to shortly) there's no danger of missing out on anything so it should be a relatively straightforward ride. First off, you'll be graced with some cutscenes. These total around 8 minutes, and as subtitles aren't on by default, if you go into the menu and select 'HUD' you can change that option there if you like. It's something the game doesn't actually tell you, hence why it's included here! As the cutscenes continue, you'll automatically grab the Achievement: Through a different Lenz. When the cutscene ends, walk with Seb up the linear path. There's not much to see here and none of the NPCs will interact with you either. Eventually it'll trigger another cutscene and end the hardest mission you will ever see in a video game. Mission 2: First Day at Silva Back to top ↑ Inside the Silva facility, jump up the buggy by pressing Triangle (Y) and drive it along to the marked location on your map. Park up the buggy next to the one already stationary and it'll trigger another cutscene. When Rigby hands you a gun (Weapon #1: Delta .45), follow her out the room. You can interact with the big map in the middle of the room but there's not really much you can do with it. In the corridor, you'll be prompted to tap the down directional pad to activate your scanner. This is quite a handy tool to get used to using, mostly because it'll mark nearby enemies or any locked doors that you might need to hack. Unfortunately, it's not as in-depth as Watch Dog's interactive elements but it serves its purpose all the same. Mission 3: A Strange Happening Back to top ↑ Enter the buggy and drive outside the facility. Follow the marker and pick up Seb. Once he enters, follow the marker on your map all the way out to the desert. Make sure you don't drive too far away (over 600 yard away) on the road as you'll activate a Game Over screen if you do! Drive toward the smoke in the distance in the desert, and you'll find a bunch of rogue robots marching about. Park up nearby and hit the down direction to mark the enemies. After, holding L1, select your weapon and then take cover by pressing O (B) near to the rocks. The game doesn't have a blind cover option which is lovely but the enemies don't hit too hard here so go ahead and take them out without too much fear of getting shot in return. Running over the corpses will net you some Light Ordance pick-ups but not much else. When you're ready, get back in the buggy and return to the security office. Approach the console by the wall (pictured below) and hit Triangle (Y) to interact.

‘MindsEye' From Rockstar Veteran Lands June Release With Extensive Level Creation Tool
Build a Rocket Boy, an independent game development company founded by Rockstar North and Grand Theft Auto veteran Leslie Benzies, has released a new trailer for its debut game, MindsEye , offering a detailed look at its futuristic shooter action, post-launch content and a unique in-depth level creation tool. The gameplay overview trailer showcases more of the third-person cover-shooting action players can expect from the title, set in the backdrop of a near-futuristic city called Redrock. Players will take on the role of Jacob Diaz, played by Alex Hernandez, who some might recognise as Lincoln Clay from 2016's Mafia III , a former soldier with a mysterious neural implant that enables him to control a companion drone to enhance his combat abilities. According to the game's official description, MindsEye will feature a 'tightly crafted linear story campaign' revolving around a 'conspiracy involving rogue AI, corporate greed, an unchecked military, and a threat so sinister that it endangers the very survival of humanity'. Despite its apparent open-world nature, it's worth noting that the game will not be a GTA clone, instead being more in line with the earlier Mafia games, meaning players shouldn't expect a cluttered world filled with side activities, but a focused, narrative experience complemented by a city to explore. While the game might seem like a standard shooter affair, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, considering today's age of open-world bloat and games chasing trends, MindsEye does offer something wholly unique in its PC-only game creation system, , an in-game platform that allows players to make use of an extensive developer creation tool to build fully fleshed-out levels using game assets, potentially boosting the longevity of the game with a stream of user-created content. The trailer also showcased the game's content roadmap, detailing what players can expect at launch and in the future. MindsEye will launch with its story campaign and something described as 'single-player free roam', alongside a few additional missions, such as a horde mode called 'Destruction Site Shootout', two combat missions titled 'Honor Amongst Thieves' and 'Friendly Fire', 12 races and three drone races. Users who pre-order the game also get access to its Premium Pass, which provides an extra horde mode mission and some cosmetics. Moving forward, MindsEye is set to receive a 'constant stream' of content monthly, with its roadmap detailing 'special collaborations', new missions and single-player modes, multiplayer and free roam updates throughout the rest of the year, with owners of the Premium Pass gaining access to extra missions and cosmetics. MindsEye will launch on 10 June 2025 on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Kevin is a reformed PC Master Race gamer with a penchant for franchise 'duds' like Darksiders III and Dead Space 3 . He has made it his life-long mission to play every single major game release – lest his wallet dies trying. Build a Rocket Boy Leslie Benzies MindsEye
